Book excerpt: Jesus: His Story in Stone is a reflection on still-existing stone objects that Jesus would have known, seen, or even touched. Each of the seventy short chapters is accompanied by a photograph taken on location in Israel. Arranged chronologically, the one-page meditations compose a portrait of Christ as seen through the significant stones in His life, from the cave where He was born to the rock of Calvary. While packed with historical and archaeological detail, the book’s main thrust is devotional, leading the reader both spiritually and physically closer to Jesus.

Wrong choices can keep our lives in turmoil and nothing will seem to ever go right. This journey through my years of raising my children and growing up will help you too as you share my stones. Some stones will seem rough, others smooth and then there are those stones which will bring hard changes in your life. But if you throw down your stones, God will begin a work in your life to help you be who you were called to be. There were times I felt like I was being stoned. Then other times I could find rest and peace in receiving these stones. Yet in all these stones you will see, as I did, that when I made the right choice to let God be God, I found these stones easy to lay down before a Holy God, knowing that no matter what was happening in my life God would be with me all the way. God promises to never leave us or forsake us. Through these years and years of learning to walk in obedience and sacrifice I have grown up and found that Gods ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts. HE IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH and THE LIFE. It was not always easy, but it was a journey of a lifetime for me, with a God who loves me so much that He gave His life so we can all be over comers and not be overcome! Now, follow me down this less-traveled path to find peace, joy, obedience, and sacrificial love, as you too begin to..THROW DOWN YOUR STONES.

Book The Ante Nicene Fathers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexander Roberts
  • Publisher : Cosimo, Inc.
  • Release : 2007-05-01
  • ISBN : 1602064717
  • Pages : 641 pages

Download or read book The Ante Nicene Fathers written by Alexander Roberts and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume II of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find the writings of: the Pastor of Hermas, author of a popular book in the Ante-Nicene era Tatian, a second-century theologian Theophilus, a Christian convert and early apologist Athenagoras, a Christian convert and accomplished philosopher and Clement of Alexandria, who wrote Protrepticus, Paedagogus, and Stromata."

Book The Revealing Image

  • Author : Joy Schaverien

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schaverien painstakingly describes and defines "processes which have so far only been intuitively known to art therapists" (p6) by introducing and elaborating the psychoanalytical concepts of transference and countertransference in relation to the use of visual art objects. The authors stated intention in this book is "to attempt to bridge the perceived gap between the practice of art therapy and analytical forms of psychotherapy..."(p 229) The epistemological base of this venture includes the fields of philosophy, anthropology, and aesthetics, as well as psychoanalysis. Schaverien suggests that analytical art psychotherapy is a way of working analytically with patients who are unsuitable, or unready, for psychotherapy, giving examples of psychotic and borderline patients, children, and patients in psychiatric settings. This is primarily a book about an analytical approach within art therapy, which may be of interest in itself. The material also raises issues of interest to analysts and psychotherapists, whether or not they work with art in the clinical setting. The book clarifies areas of similarity between the disciplines, and also makes areas of difference apparent. For example, most analysts would agree that visual art, like dream material, and other non-verbal representations of the inner world, can at times articulate and communicate meanings which for one reason or another cannot be verbally articulated at the time, and that this can be pertinent to the aim of analysis. However, I think few analysts would include facilities in their consulting rooms for the kind of art processes described in the book. When the analyst is working with materials in this form, the book will be extremely helpful in sorting out the complexity of the transference situation and the role of interpretation. The book is so strongly grounded in experiences emerging in the presence of actual art processes and objects that I think it will be of most interest to those who are interested in the specific clinical issues involved in relating to the making and use of actual art objects within the setting. Schaverien not only describes the processes involved in detail, but also presents technical approaches to the making and handling of art objects within the setting which will inform the capacity of those who are not trained as art therapists to relate to this kind of material in the consulting room.'

Book Your Stone Age Brain in the Screen Age

Download or read book Your Stone Age Brain in the Screen Age written by Richard E. Cytowic and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning neurologist on the Stone-Age roots of our screen addictions, and what to do about them. The human brain hasn’t changed much since the Stone Age, let alone in the mere thirty years of the Screen Age. That’s why, according to neurologist Richard Cytowic—who, Oliver Sacks observed, “changed the way we think of the human brain”—our brains are so poorly equipped to resist the incursions of Big Tech: They are programmed for the wildly different needs of a prehistoric world. In Your Stone Age Brain in the Screen Age, Cytowic explains exactly how this programming works—from the brain’s point of view. What he reveals in this book shows why we are easily addicted to screen devices; why young, developing brains are particularly vulnerable; why we need silence; and what we can do to push back. In the engaging storytelling style of his popular TED Talk, Cytowic draws an easily comprehensible picture of the Stone Age brain’s workings—the function of neurotransmitters like dopamine in basic instincts for survival such as desire and reward; the role of comparison in emotion, and emotion in competition; and, most significantly, the orienting reflex, one of the unconscious circuits that automatically focus, shift, and sustain attention. Given this picture, the nature of our susceptibility to digital devices becomes clear, along with the possibility of how to break their spell. Full of practical actions that we can start taking right away, Your Stone Age Brain in the Screen Age offers compelling evidence that we can change the way we use technology, resist its addictive power over us, and take back the control we have lost.
