Book excerpt: Poetry. Jewish Studies. GRANDFATHER'S MANDOLIN; by Fran Markover; is a collection of poems deeply rooted in family and what has come before. David Keplinger notes that "in these poems languages and names and articles of clothing seem to have lives; hats are thought to be alive; and names deserve elegies and memorials because they are breathing things that can pass away from this world; if we do not take care. Poem by poem; Markover creates a rich landscape of lives remembered; honored and loved."

Book Seeking Fortune Elsewhere

Download or read book Seeking Fortune Elsewhere written by Sindya Bhanoo and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These intimate stories of South Indian immigrants and the families they left behind center women’s lives and ask how women both claim and surrender power—a stunning debut collection from an O. Henry Prize winner Traveling from Pittsburgh to Eastern Washington to Tamil Nadu, these stories about dislocation and dissonance see immigrants and their families confront the costs of leaving and staying, identifying sublime symmetries in lives growing apart. In “Malliga Homes,” selected by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for an O. Henry Prize, a widow in a retirement community glimpses her future while waiting for her daughter to visit from America. In "No. 16 Model House Road," a woman long subordinate to her husband makes a choice of her own after she inherits a house. In "Nature Exchange," a mother grieving in the wake of a school shooting finds an unusual obsession. In "A Life in America," a professor finds himself accused of having exploited his graduate students. Sindya Bhanoo’s haunting stories show us how immigrants’ paths, and the paths of those they leave behind, are never simple. Bhanoo takes us along on their complicated journeys where regret, hope, and triumph appear in disguise.

Whether you call them your Grandfather, Gramps, Papa, Peepaw, Granddad, Grumps, and/or any other weird name (that you invented when you were a toddler because you could not pronounce "Grandpa"); they are the absolute best. They hold the best stories, peculiar habits, pocket candies, "old-timer" stereotypes, and so much more. This book is a collaboration of haiku and free form poems which are perfect to read together for some special Grandfatherly "bonding time." (Have fun getting frustrated as you attempt to answer a million questions about what everything in the book means). It is also a "homerun" gift idea for their birthday (which they most likely forgot about), any other special occasion, or a "just because" present. Unless your Grandfather has literally no sense of humor whatsoever... then maybe don't even bother. Otherwise, "play ball!"

Download or read book My Grandfather is a Cowboy written by Sharon Waller Knutson and published by Cyberwit.Net. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharon Waller Knutson's "My Grandfather is a Cowboy" is a collection of poetry you read as though you were watching a film from the old West, but without Hollywood's make believe. Knutson's poems take us deep into the heart of cowboy country: Montana, Idaho and Arizona, with wonderful lines like: "My father blows into town / with the Montana wind." and "He wore a black ten-gallon hat / and snakeskin boots and Levi's / so tight they painted his legs blue / I never saw a gun but in Texas / he said, he wore a Saturday / night special in a holster on his hip." Rose Mary Boehm, Sausade (Kelsay Books 2023) Sharon Waller Knutson's spare elegant and powerful storytelling is crafted with simplicity--common words, syntax, to create images that are complex, entertaining, and poignant, all at the same time. One example is the image of young love: "I imagine how my mother melts like the butter in the pan." It's hard to pick favorites but I go back to the title poem, "My Grandfather is a Cowboy," "Toddler Houdini" and "Smoke and Mirrors" for the stories they tell and to savor the rhythm of the words and images. Joan Leotta, Feathers on Stone (Main Street Rag 2022) In "My Grandfather Is a Cowboy," Sharon Waller Knutson lassoed me before I even got to the first poem. Still, I'd already met the strong resilient women of her family in "The Leading Ladies of My Life" and suspected the men had a hard act to follow. No need to worry though, as Knutson doesn't believe in dull storytelling. Her twists and turns, especially her surprise endings, keep readers galloping along, eager to see over the next page. Book Poems Written Under My Grandfather s Tree

Download or read book Poems Written Under My Grandfather s Tree written by Ayo Gutierrez and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-07 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an old saint, siting under theshadow of a palm treeHis wooden stick calmly resting on hisShoulderAnd with a smile on his face, he starts telling a tale'Imran Khan Bayo is from Pakistan. He, like me, does not have English as a native language. Like me, he had to hijack it and make it his own. It makes for a very personal style, which shows in his writing. His verses indeed are not about accentuation, phonology, or, even, meters. They are about images, and the more powerful the images the better. Content is, to him, more important than decorative features. That is not to say Imran Khan Bayo has no care for the language, or that he cannot dabble in traditional forms. He does, in fact, have a deep heartfelt passion for words, and, whether he ventures into traditional forms, or, get us lost into the realm of free expression, there is no denying his creativity and artful spark. Just have a read, for example, at his final series of haiku! They are formal, they follow the expected syllabic pattern; yet, they also remain broken words splattered on the page like sharp revelations left for the reader to decode. Imran Khan Bayo's passion for words runs deeper than that: it's part of his very own goal to grow as a person, English language being, as the most successful international language, his way to open up and connect with like-minded people worldwide. His is an echo that wants to be in unison with us all, and, poetry his mirror offered to the world, his way to reflect a beautiful soul -his soul. As a result, his verses are poetry I like, because they are poetry I relate to. They are poetry which, beyond a simple creative endeavour, one can understand and acquiesce to. His poetry is not selfish. His poems are not the self-centred and shallow verses put on display in a Twitter-post like manner. They, on the contrary, bear a message for us all to listen, a universal message we too often forget in the rat race we can all be so engrossed in. They are an invite, an invite for us to slow down. Indeed, Imran Khan Bayo wants us to sit down like under the shade of a palm tree, in order to fully appreciate the simplicities that make the magic of life. His prose might be autobiographical, starting by reminiscing about his grandfather, but his poetry embodies a universal yearning -for friendship, for love, for family, for an openness and generosity embracing the whole of mankind. Do not believe it to be naïve, though! He can also vent his anger, and point at those failing to care, rail against the selfishness and greed, alien to him, which he abhors with disdain. The simplicity of his language, the simplicity of his imagery (usually common metaphors and sayings he twists at will) coupled with the simplicity of his message, will therefore not fail to strike the reader for its profound and genuine call for brotherhood, its childish wonders at the world we all share despite its, at times, poisonous ugliness. He demands: 'see in darknessWrite in brightness'I will personally add: 'read with kindness'. Come, and sit down. There still is space under the shade of the palm tree. Book Notebooks of the Mind

  • Author : Vera John-Steiner
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Notebooks of the Mind written by Vera John-Steiner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do creative people think? Do great works of the imagination originate in words or in images? Is there a rational explanation for the sudden appearance of geniuses like Mozart or Einstein? Such questions have fascinated people for centuries; only in recent years, however, has cognitive psychology been able to provide some clues to the mysterious process of creativity. In this revised edition of Notebooks of the Mind, Vera John-Steiner combines imaginative insight with scientific precision to produce a startling account of the human mind working at its highest potential. To approach her subject John-Steiner goes directly to the source, assembling the thoughts of "experienced thinkers"--artists, philosophers, writers, and scientists able to reflect on their own imaginative patterns. More than fifty interviews (with figures ranging from Jessica Mitford to Aaron Copland), along with excerpts from the diaries, letters, and autobiographies of such gifted giants as Leo Tolstoy, Marie Curie, and Diego Rivera, among others, provide illuminating insights into creative activity. We read, for example, of Darwin's preoccupation with the image of nature as a branched tree while working on his concept of evolution. Mozart testifies to the vital influence on his mature art of the wondrous "bag of memories" he retained from childhood. Anais Nin describes her sense of words as oppressive, explaining how imagistic free association freed her as a writer. Adding these personal accounts to laboratory studies of thought process, John-Steiner takes a refreshingly holistic approach to the question of creativity. What emerges is an intriguing demonstration of how specific sociocultural circumstances interact with certain personality traits to encourage the creative mind. Among the topics examined here are the importance of childhood mentor figures; the lengthy apprenticeship of the talented person; and the development of self- expression through highly individualistic languages, whether in images, movement or inner speech. Now, with a new introduction, this award-winning book provides an uniquely broad-based study of the origins, development and fruits of human inspiration.

Book My Grandfather s Gift of Psalm 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of stories encompassing the ups and downs I have faced in this walk called life. God has shown me how He has been guiding me all along, leading me to have a deeper faith in Him in all that I do and encounter. God’s Word and love has given me the hope and encouragement I have needed. I know that He is always with me especially when I may not realize it at the time. The stories in this book display the steppingstones I have crossed and how God has led me through good, bad, sad and even funny times. He leads me to the next steppingstone I must cross. My Grandfather Reverend Elmer West gave me the gift of Psalm 1 in 1999. Since then I have learned how much grander God’s plans are verses my own... I will not wither. I hope my book will give you inspiration, deepen your faith, and maybe even give you a laugh or two as you let God guide you through your own journey of steppingstones.

Book Waldo Emerson My Grandfather and Me

Download or read book Waldo Emerson My Grandfather and Me written by Eugene X. Perticone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Matthew is almost twelve years old, his grandfather, Sam, decides it's time for him to get to know the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a sage the boy has never heard of. During their frequent meetings, Sam introduces Matthew to Emerson's sophisticated notions and wisdoms. Emerson's words, delivered in the essay Self-Reliance and in other writings, teach Matthew practical concepts that give greater meaning to life and help him successfully overcome difficulties for himself and his family. At the same time, Sam and Matthew develop a very special and loving relationship. In Waldo Emerson, My Grandfather, and Me, author Eugene X. Perticone shows that although circumstances and the problems of life may seem different and more complex in our time, the best solutions haven't changed much. The wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson as it pertains to both worldly and spiritual matters is shown to be as relevant today as in the time it was written, and a grandfather's approach to teaching this to his grandson results in happiness for both of them as well as many others in the boy's life.
