Book Thermal Barrier Coatings for Advanced Gas Turbine and Diesel Engines

Download or read book Thermal Barrier Coatings for Advanced Gas Turbine and Diesel Engines written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCS) have been developed for advanced gas turbine and diesel engine applications to improve engine reliability and fuel efficiency. However, durability issues of these thermal barrier coatings under high temperature cyclic conditions are still of major concern. The coating failure depends not only on the coating, but also on the ceramic sintering/creep and bond coat oxidation under the operating conditions. Novel test approaches have been established to obtain critical thermomechanical and thermophysical properties of the coating systems under near-realistic transient and steady state temperature and stress gradients encountered in advanced engine systems. This paper presents detailed experimental and modeling results describing processes occurring in the ZrO2-Y2O3 thermal barrier coating systems, thus providing a framework for developing strategies to manage ceramic coating architecture, microstructure and properties. Book Thermal Conductivity of EB PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings Evaluated by a Steady State Laser Heat Flux Technique

Download or read book Thermal Conductivity of EB PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings Evaluated by a Steady State Laser Heat Flux Technique written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal conductivity of electron beam-physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) Zr02-8wt%Y2O3 thermal barrier coatings was determined by a steady-state heat flux laser technique. Thermal conductivity change kinetics of the EB-PVD ceramic coatings were also obtained in real time, at high temperatures, under the laser high heat flux, long term test conditions. The thermal conductivity increase due to micro-pore sintering and the decrease due to coating micro-delaminations in the EB-PVD coatings were evaluated for grooved and non-grooved EB-PVD coating systems under isothermal and thermal cycling conditions. The coating failure modes under the high heat flux test conditions were also investigated. The test technique provides a viable means for obtaining coating thermal conductivity data for use in design, development, and life prediction for engine applications.

Book Effects of Thermo mechanical Loading from In situ Studies of EB PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings

Download or read book Effects of Thermo mechanical Loading from In situ Studies of EB PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings written by Melan N. Jansz and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermo-mechanical effects on the strain evolution within an EB-PVD thermal barrier coating (TBC) is presented in this work using in-situ characterization. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction at sector 1-ID at the Argonne National Laboratory provided both qualitative and quantitative in-situ data on the strain evolution under a thermal cycle with mechanical loading. The results show that at a critical combination of temperature and load, the stress in the thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer in the TBC reaches a tensile region. These significant findings enhance existing literature showing purely compressive strains within the TGO where mechanical loads have been neglected. The results have important implications on the effects on the overall life of the coating. Depth resolved quantitative strain is presented as contour plots over a thermal cycle highlighting the complementary strains in the adjacent layers including the bond coat and the TBC with time and temperature. Systematic identification of the appropriate peaks within the multi-layer TBC system provides guidelines for future strain studies using high energy X-rays. Piezospectroscopic studies with applied mechanical loading are further presented as verification of the room temperature XRD data for future development of the method as an operational technique to be used outside the laboratory environment.

Book Comparison of Thermal Properties of Thermal Barrier Coating Deposited on IN738 Using Standard Air Plasma Spray with 100HE Plasma Spray System

Download or read book Comparison of Thermal Properties of Thermal Barrier Coating Deposited on IN738 Using Standard Air Plasma Spray with 100HE Plasma Spray System written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have low thermal conductivity values and have a primary benefit of providing an insulating layer that reduces the coated substrate temperature and mitigates the effects of hot streaking or uneven temperature distributions. Thermal conductivity, k, is a thermo-physical property that can be derived from the thermal diffusivity, ?, of the specimen. It can be obtained from the formula k = ? cp ?, where cp is specific heat and ? is the density of the material. Thermal conductivity, k, describes the quantity of heat that passes through a unit area of sample in unit time with a temperature gradient present. This thermal property of TBCs can be measured by flash method in which a nearly instantaneous pulse of energy (usually laser or other discharge source) is input to the frontal surface of a material sample and the temperature changes are measured on back side of sample with and INSb infrared detector as shown in Fig.1. A laser flash test has the advantage of being fast while providing values with excellent accuracy and reproducibility. In this study, an instantaneous triangular heat pulse from a laser heat flash system (FL5000) made by Anter corporation, Pittsburgh, PA was used. The technique satisfies the ASTM E 1461. The test method can measure thermal diffusivity values ranging from 10-7 to 10-3 m2/s from temperatures 75 to 2800 K.
