Book Thermodynamic Functions of a Partially Degenerate Fully Ionized Gas

Download or read book Thermodynamic Functions of a Partially Degenerate Fully Ionized Gas written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formalism of Glassgold, Heckrotte, and Watson for the expansion of the quantum-mechanical grand partition function has been applied to a gas of point charges. The theory was extended to a multicomponent gas of fermions and bosons, and the ring diagrams were summed to give an approximate expression for the equation of state valid for the entire temperature range. The near-classical limit (high-temperature and low-density so that the gas is only slightly degenerate) is discussed in detail, and useful formulas for numerical computation of pressure and internal energy are derived from the general ring approximation to the equation of state. By expanding the chemical potential in powers of the coupling constant e/sup 2/, it is possible to eliminate the parametric dependence of pressure and density on the chemical potential and obtain the pressure as a function of density. The classical-limit Debye-Huckel results are obtained when h approaches 0. A general form of the screening length is obtained with the effective screening charge as z/sub i/e THETA /sub i/, where THETA /sub i/ is a measure of the degeneracy of the particle species i. The contribution to the pressure from the simplest exchange interaction valid for all temperatares is evaluated exactly. The temperature and density range for which the nearclassical- limit formulas are valid is discussed. (auth).

Book Approximate Thermodynamics State Relations in Partially Ionized Gas Mixtures

Download or read book Approximate Thermodynamics State Relations in Partially Ionized Gas Mixtures written by J. D. Ramshaw and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In practical applications, the thermodynamic state relations of partially ionized gas mixtures are usually approximated in terms of the state relations of the pure partially ionized constituent gases or materials in isolation. Such approximations are ordinarily based on an artificial partitioning or separation of the mixture into its constituent materials, with material k regarded as being confined by itself within a compartment or subvolume with volume fraction {alpha}k and possessing a fraction {beta}k of the total internal energy of the mixture. In a mixture of N materials, the quantities {alpha}k and {beta}k constitute an additional 2N--2 independent variables. The most common procedure for determining these variables, and hence the state relations for the mixture, is to require that the subvolumes all have the same temperature and pressure. This intuitively reasonable procedure is easily shown to reproduce the correct thermal and caloric state equations for a mixture of neutral (non-ionized) ideal gases. Here we wish to point out that (a) this procedure leads to incorrect state equations for a mixture of partially ionized ideal gases, whereas (b) the alternative procedure of requiring that the subvolumes all have the same temperature and free electron density reproduces the correct thermal and caloric state equations for such a mixture. These results readily generalize to the case of partially degenerate and/or relativistic electrons, to a common approximation used to represent pressure ionization effects, and to two-temperature plasmas. This suggests that equating the subvolume electron number densities or chemical potentials instead of pressures is likely to provide a more accurate approximation even in nonideal plasma mixtures.

Book Quantum Statistics of Dense Gases and Nonideal Plasmas

Download or read book Quantum Statistics of Dense Gases and Nonideal Plasmas written by Werner Ebeling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is the pedagogical exploration of the basic principles of quantum-statistical thermodynamics as applied to various states of matter – ranging from rare gases to astrophysical matter with high-energy density. The reader will learn in this work that thermodynamics and quantum statistics are still the concepts on which even the most advanced research is operating - despite of a flood of modern concepts, classical entities like temperature, pressure, energy and entropy are shown to remain fundamental. The physics of gases, plasmas and high-energy density matter is still a growing field and even though solids and liquids dominate our daily life, more than 99 percent of the visible Universe is in the state of gases and plasmas and the overwhelming part of matter exists at extreme conditions connected with very large energy densities, such as in the interior of stars. This text, combining material from lectures and advanced seminars given by the authors over many decades, is a must-have introduction and reference for both newcomers and seasoned researchers alike.

Book Lectures on Quantum Statistics

Download or read book Lectures on Quantum Statistics written by Werner Ebeling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the matter in our universe is in a gaseous or plasma state. Yet, most textbooks on quantum statistics focus on examples from and applications in condensed matter systems, due to the prevalence of solids and liquids in our day-to-day lives. In an attempt to remedy that oversight, this book consciously focuses on teaching the subject matter in the context of (dilute) gases and plasmas, while aiming primarily at graduate students and young researchers in the field of quantum gases and plasmas for some of the more advanced topics. The majority of the material is based on a two-semester course held jointly by the authors over many years, and has benefited from extensive feedback provided by countless students and co-workers. The book also includes many historical remarks on the roots of quantum statistics: firstly because students appreciate and are strongly motivated by looking back at the history of a given field of research, and secondly because the spirit permeating this book has been deeply influenced by meetings and discussions with several pioneers of quantum statistics over the past few decades.

Book Electromagnetic Fluctuations In Plasma

Download or read book Electromagnetic Fluctuations In Plasma written by A Sitenko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic Fluctuations in Plasma focuses on the theoretical investigation of the electromagnetic properties of a plasma (an ionized gas). The manuscript first takes a look at the general theory of fluctuations and electromagnetic fluctuations in media with space-time dispersion. Discussions focus on spectral distribution of the fluctuations and energy dissipation in the medium; dielectric and magnetic permittivities in a medium with spatial dispersion; current, charge, and field fluctuations in a medium; and inversion of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The text then examines the electrodynamic properties of an electron plasma and electromagnetic fluctuations in an electron plasma. The publication ponders on fluctuations in an electron-ion plasma and electron plasma in a magnetic field. Topics include plasma dielectric permittivity tensor in a magnetic field; longitudinal plasma oscillations in a magnetic field; fluctuations in charge and current densities in an equilibrium electron-ion plasma; and electron and ion density fluctuations in an equilibrium plasma. The text also tackles the passage of charged particles through plasma and dynamic friction and diffusion coefficients in a plasma. The book is a dependable reference for readers interested in the study of the electromagnetic properties of a plasma.

Book Quantum Statistics of Nonideal Plasmas

Download or read book Quantum Statistics of Nonideal Plasmas written by Dietrich Kremp and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the statistical theory of strongly coupled Coulomb systems. After an elementary introduction to the physics of nonideal plasmas, a presentation of the method of (nonequilibrium) Green's functions is given. On this basis, the dielectric, thermodynamic, transport, and relaxation properties are discussed systematically. Especially, the behavior of bound states in the surrounding plasma (lowering of the ionization energy), the ionization kinetics, and the equation of state of dense partially ionized hydrogen are each carefully investigated. Furthermore, generalized kinetic equations are derived which are also valid for short time scales. They are applied to ultra-fast processes and to plasmas in laser fields.
