Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This and its companion volumes 8,9, and 10 document the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution (SIS) held in New Delhi, India, August 18-22, 1986 under the joint auspices of the Indian Society for Surface Science and Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. As this symposium was a landmark -- it represented the tenth anniversary of this series of symposia -- so it is very apropos to reflect on how these symposia have evolved to their present size and status. The pedigree of this series of symposia goes back to 1976 when the premier symposium in this series was held. Actually in 1976 it was a modest start and it was not possible at that time to gaze at the crystal ball and predict what would be the state of affairs in 1986. For historical purposes, it should be recorded here that the first symposium was held in Albany, NY, under the title "Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions"; the second symposium was christened "Solution Chemistry of Surfactants" and was held in Knoxville, TN, in 1978; the venue for the third symposium in 1980 was Potsdam, NY, and it was dubbed "International Symposium on Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects.

Book Systematic Study of Ionic Surfactant and Ethoxylated Alcohol Mixed Micelles

Download or read book Systematic Study of Ionic Surfactant and Ethoxylated Alcohol Mixed Micelles written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermodynamic properties and aggregation behaviour of mixed micellar systems, comprised of sodium alkylcarboxylate salts, CnNa (where n = 8,10,12), ethoxylated alcohols, C4EOx (where EO = ethylene oxide group, X = 0,1,2,3,4), and n-alkyltrimethylammonium bromide salts, RNMe3Br (where R = octyl, decyl, and dodecy), have been studied to characterize the micellization process of the surfactants and to explore the specificity of interactions that lead to distinctive solubilization behaviour of polyethylene alkyl ether compounds in anionic and cationic micelles. The changes in the apparent molar properties of the surfactant in the monomer state, YSÓ, S, and in the micellar state, YMÓ, S; the distribution coefficient of the alcohol, KD between the micellar and aqueous phases; the change in the partial molar properties of the alcohol, Ø YMAS, and alcohol, NA?sub, in the mixed micelle, have been correlated with the chemical structure of the surfactants and alcohols. The apparent molar volumetric properties of the binary aqueous surfactant systems were analyzed using a mass-action model, which provides a quantitative description of the surfactant micellization process. The volumetric transfer functions for C4EOX, Ø YA(W · W + S), at a low concentration of 0.05 m (0.02 m in long chain surfactant systems), from water to the micellar phase were analyzed using a chemical equilibrium model to obtain the solubilization parameters of the alcohol in the micellar system, namely, the distribution coefficient, KD, and the change in the partial molar properties of the alcohol, Ø YMA, between water and the micellar phases. The mean aggregation number, NS?sub, of Csub8Na and Csub10Na in the mixed micelle, obtained from fluorescence quenching measurements, remains unc.

Book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions

Download or read book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions written by Sow Hsin Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been a renewed interest in research on supramolecular assemblies in solutions, such as micelles and microemulsions, not only because of their extensive applications in industries dealing with catalysts, detergency, biotechnology, and enhanced oil recovery, but also due to the development of new and more powerful experimental and theoretical tools for probing the microscopic behavior of these systems. Prominent among the array of the newly available experimental techniques are photon correlation spectroscopy, small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, and neutron spin-echo and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. On the theoretical side, the traditionally emphasized thermodynamic approach to the study of the phase behavior of self-assembled systems in solutions is gradually being replaced by statistical mechanical studies of semi-micro scopic and microscopic models of the assemblies. Since the statistical mechanical approach demands as its starting point the microscopic struc tural information of the self-assembled system, the experimental determina tion of the structures of micelles and microemulsions becomes of paramount interest. In this regard the scattering techniques mentioned above have played an important role in recent years and will continue to do so in the future. In applying the scattering techniques to the supramolecular species in solution, one cannot often regard the solution to be ideal. This is because the inter-aggregate interaction is often long-ranged since it is coulombic in nature and the interparticle correlations are thus appreciable.

Book Molecular thermodynamic Theories of Micellization of Multicomponent Surfactant Mixtures and of PH sensitive Surfactants

Download or read book Molecular thermodynamic Theories of Micellization of Multicomponent Surfactant Mixtures and of PH sensitive Surfactants written by Arthur Clayton Goldsipe and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) A simpler theory based on RST was also developed to model titrations of micelles containing pH-sensitive and conventional surfactants. In addition, this thesis resulted in the rst experimental study of the eect of micelle composition on the titration behavior of mixed micelles containing a pH-sensitive surfactant and a conventional surfactant. The resulting MT theories have provided fundamental, physical insight, and they may also decrease the need for the costly and time-consuming process associated with "trial-and-error" surfactant formulation.
