Book Research Studies on Thermionic Converters Emitter Shell Phase

Download or read book Research Studies on Thermionic Converters Emitter Shell Phase written by G. Y. Eastman and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major engineering effort was directed toward completion of the permeation studies of sample materials, development of alternate barrier designs, and fabrication of converters for evaluation and life testing. The permeation of fossil fuel combustion gas was determined for alumina, beryllia, and silicon carbide samples, using a prototype burner designed for this purpose. Supplemental tests were run uwing helium, argon, and nitrogen on alumina and hydrogen on silicon carbide. Alumina appeared to be the best barrier material of those tested. Alternate barrier-emitter systems were designed, including multilayer-coated molybdenum cups and a double-walled alumina-molybdenum assembly with helium-filled interstice. A double-walled converter developed over eight watts on preliminary test. (Author).

Book High Voltage Thermionic Converters

Download or read book High Voltage Thermionic Converters written by General Motors Corporation. Allison Division and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several emitter materials, tantalum, tungsten and rhenium, and two emitter geometries, planar and excess area were evaluated in a flexible laboratory thermionic converter design. Results are reported from six converters that were tested for a total of 1070 hr. Experimental results from the excess area emitter converters did not exhibit the current enhancement observed in multicapillary and slotted emitter converters developed on a previous Air Force contract. While the electron currents in the passive mode at relatively low cesium pressure were in qualitative agreement with theory, the actual current densities obtained were not high enough to produce practical power densities at high output voltage. The method of emitter fabrication which used a niobium braze material appears to be a primary reason for the low performance.

Book BASIC RESEARCH IN THERMIONIC CONVERTERS

Download or read book BASIC RESEARCH IN THERMIONIC CONVERTERS written by James R Fendley (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apparatus and measurement techniques for studies of the effects of adding noble gases to operating cesium vapor thermionic converters are described. Experimental results on the effect of adding helium and argon at pressures up to several tens of torr are given. The thermionic converter operating in the low-temperature arc mode is relatively insensitive to noble gas additives. The observed effects of gas dosing are small and can be summarized as follows: the discharge becomes more stable and the glow region in the interelectrode space becomes more uniformly distributed. The electron transport properties of the diode are adversely affected at high current densities and large electrodes spacings. The output voltage at low current levels increases upon introduction of noble gases. Theoretical interpretations of these results are described. (Author).

Book RESEARCH ON THERMIONIC CONVERTERS

Download or read book RESEARCH ON THERMIONIC CONVERTERS written by GENERAL ELECTRIC CO SCHENECTADY N Y. and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermionic conversion involves the generation of electricity from thermal energy utilizing the phenomenon of thermionic emission of electrons, and requires no moving parts. Three basically different types of converters were the subjects of wide study: (1) vacuum converters which have now been developed to the product design stage for cathode temperatures in the range of 1100 to 1150 C, anode temperatures 600 to 700 C and electrical power outputs of 0.2 watt/ sq cm (min.) at an efficiency o 2.5%; (2) vapor converters which have been are developed for solar space power with an efficiency of 15% at a cathode temperature of 1800 C; and (3) crossed-field converters which utilize a combination of electric and magnetic fields to direct the electron flow from cathode to anode in the converter. This particular line of development did not appear to be fruitful, and further work was not recommended on the crossed-field approach. (Author).

Book The Development of a Thermionic Converter Module Suitable for Liquid Metal Heating

Download or read book The Development of a Thermionic Converter Module Suitable for Liquid Metal Heating written by G. Y. Eastman and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effort was continued to improve performance and increase the reliability of thermionic energy converters for space applications. The particular objectives include optimization of geometry and ceramic insulation between emitters and heat source. This work will include the development of a thermionic generator module to develop 3.0 volts of potential from a liquid metal heat source. The overall concept of the 3-volt generator has been established. Before final design and fabrication of the generator, the more difficult problems are being solved by fabricating and testing prototype 3-converter modules. During this period, four 3-converter modules were assembled. A number of subassemblies were successfully tested and techniques for assembling a series of converters within a single envelope were perfected. A method of bonding the center heat source tubing has been tentatively selected and materials for detailed evaluation of the method have been ordered. Life testing of one Type A1198B converter was concluded after 1010 hours. Another converter of this type has since completed 600 hours of a life test with a constant output of 46 watts. (Author).
