The numerical analysis of the heat and mass exchange process in carbon plastics under repeated impulse action is also presented. The numerical solutions of problems are compared with the known experimental data. The book is intended for specialists in the field of thermal protection and heat mass exchange, as well as graduate and undergraduates in physics and mathematics.

Book excerpt: Hypersonic vehicles operate in extreme conditions, experiencing high heating loads, gas temperatures often exceeding 10,000 K in the shock layer, and oxidizing environments. Thermal protection systems (TPS) are thus a vital component to the design of a hypersonic flight vehicle. The overarching goal of this work is to characterize and model the material-environment interactions between TPS materials and the hypersonic flowfield -- these dictate the thermal and chemical behavior of the TPS. Two materials are investigated: ablative materials, which degrade during exposure to flight conditions, and ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs), which exhibit refractory and oxidation-resistant properties. A coupled framework involving computational fluid dynamics (CFD), material response, surface chemistry, and radiation is used to simulate experiments and evaluate the material models. This work is divided into three main parts. The first part of this dissertation demonstrates how radiative emission can be used in simulations to investigate the chemical kinetics of ablative materials. CFD--radiation simulations are performed in collaboration with high-temperature plasma experiments, using radiative emission measurements in the reacting boundary layer to validate the chemical models. The second part focuses on the development of a thermodynamic model describing oxidation of silicon carbide (SiC), a UHTC material. The model is validated against experimental data in the literature, and coupled CFD simulations of SiC oxidation are performed using the model. Predicted surface temperatures and simulated emission spectra are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. The third part details the development and evaluation of a thermodynamic model for zirconium diboride (ZrB2) and ZrB2-SiC oxidation, a UHTC composite. Overall, thermodynamic modeling approaches are sufficient to describe the equilibrium oxidation behavior of these TPS materials. However, limitations of the proposed models are also discussed, motivating the need for higher-fidelity finite-rate models and additional experimental data.

Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.

NASA is currently designing a Crew Transport Vehicle (CTV) [44, 69] and Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) [32] to replace the space shuttle; reentry vehicles are, by definition, hypersonic vehicles. Military requirements for reconnaissance and surveillance, as well as the mission of the United States Air Force to rapidly project power globally makes the design of a hypersonic plane that can quickly traverse the globe very attractive [102]. The design of hypersonic vehicles requires accurate prediction of the surface properties while in flight. These quantities are typically the heat flux, pressure and shear stress, from which the aerodynamic forces and moments can be calculated. These variables govern not only the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle, but also determine the selection and sizing of the thermal protection system (TPS), which protects the vehicle from the extreme temperatures encountered at hypersonic velocities. The geometry of a vehicle, and in particular, the nose and the leading edges of wings and other aerodynamic surfaces, is a critical consideration in a vehicle's design. Aerodynamic heating is inversely proportional to the square root of the 1 radius at the stagnation point; hence, historically most vehicles have had blunted noses and leading edges to reduce the thermal loads to acceptable levels. Recently, however, a class of materials, designated Ultra-High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) composites, has been developed that can withstand temperatures as high as 3500 K [57, 78]. Materials such as these allow the use of much sharper leading edges.

Book excerpt: A frame work has been setup for the simulation of hypersonic reentry vehicles using commercial codes FLUENT and LS-DYNA. The main goal of this work was to set up a simple approach for the heat flux prediction and evaluation of the material thermal response during the reentry of the vehicle. Fluid thermal coupling for predicting the thermal response of a reusable non-ablating thermal protection system was set up. The computational fluid dynamics code (FLUENT) and the material thermal response codes (LS- DYNA) are loosely coupled to achieve the solution. The vehicle considered in the calculation is an axisymmetric vehicle flying at zero degree angle of attack. The frame work set up was validated with the results available in the literature. Good correlation was observed between the results from the commercial codes and the results from the literature. The mesh movement capability in LS-DYNA was implemented enabling future modeling of ablating thermal protection system.

Mass transfer cooling in turbulent boundary layers was studied analytically. For 0 pressure gradient, flat plate flow, the effectiveness of mass addition in reducing heat transfer was less in the turbulent boundary layers than in laminar boundary layers. The cooling phenomenon at axisymmetric stagnation points was studied by introducing air and He through a porous wall. Below certain critical injection rates, experimental heat transfer with air injection agreed with theoretical predictions. For coolant flow rates in excess of certain critical values, heat transfer rates increased and became erratic. The effect of upstream mass injection on downstream heat transfer shows downstream heat transfer increased from mass injection. The 1-magawatt air-stablized arc was operated with a mixing chamber and transition piece, and characterization studies including temperature determinations and calorimetry were performed. (Author).
