Book Heating Times for Round and Rectangular Cross Sections of Wood in Steam

Download or read book Heating Times for Round and Rectangular Cross Sections of Wood in Steam written by William Turner Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat sterilization of wood in various forms is currently receiving attention as a means of killing insects or pathogens to prevent their transfer from one region of the world to another in trade. One concern is the amount of time required to heat wood of various cross-sectional sizes and configurations to a temperature that will kill the insects or pathogens. Estimation of heating time depends on many variables. One estimation method uses heat conduction equations. This report reviews heat conduction equations for round and rectangular cross sections of wood and their validity through experimental data from the literature and experiments. The heat conduction equations used in this analysis apply only for steam as the heating medium the use of dry heat extends heating times beyond the estimates provided by the heat conduction equations. Tables are given for the time required to heat the center of cross sections of various dimensions to various temperatures at different heating temperatures in steam.

Book Thermal Insulation and Radiation Control Technologies for Buildings

Download or read book Thermal Insulation and Radiation Control Technologies for Buildings written by Jan Kośny and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique treatment of building insulating products and the integration of these products with building components. This book was written for all those involved in building design, specification, construction, and commissioning, providing them with an understanding of and appreciation for the wide variety of thermal insulation products and technologies available for use in all types of buildings. The book proceeds from basic definitions and discussion of heat-transfer topics and thermal insulation concepts, to the design and use of these products. The impact of thermal insulation on dynamic building performance, including factors other than heating and cooling, is also discussed. The book does not require an advanced mathematical background. The authors provide sufficient information to provide a qualitative understanding, with more mathematical sections included for those interested in modeling and analysis. The basic physics associated with heat transfer in buildings are presented, along with the steady-state and transient analysis techniques needed for the effective implementation of thermal insulation and assemblies. Modern building design involves the integration of comfort, safety, economics, durability and cost considerations, all of which impact the selection and use of thermal insulation materials in buildings. In addition to theoretical explanations of the underlying science, the book details the properties and application of new thermal insulation materials, including vacuum panels, gas-filled panels, aerogels, phase-change materials, and radiation control technologies. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to researchers and building engineers wishing to understand the latest technologies and materials available, so as to achieve reduced energy consumption in commercial and residential buildings.

Book The Thermal Properties of Wood Data Base

Download or read book The Thermal Properties of Wood Data Base written by GT. Bible and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A data base of steady-state thermal properties for 15 wood species representative of those used commercially in building construction has been developed from available test data. Selected mean values of conductivity, density, moisture content, and thermal resistance are tabulated for representative groups of softwoods and hardwoods. The methodology for organizing the test data incorporating ASTM standards on wood is presented, and the statistical methods utilized for the empirical analysis are discussed. A proposed table of thermal design coefficients for softwoods doubles the reliability of predicted values currently listed in the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.
