Book Thermal Gradient Induced Deflection of a Thick Walled Cylinder with Bending Residual Stresses

Download or read book Thermal Gradient Induced Deflection of a Thick Walled Cylinder with Bending Residual Stresses written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of a thermal gradient with bending residual stresses in a thick-walled cylinder is investigated using experimental measurements from prior work, mechanics analysis, and finite element stress analysis. A temperature gradient is applied to a cylinder containing residual stresses due to plastic bending resulting in transient elastic relaxation of the nonaxisymmetric residual stresses and bending of the cylinder. Analysis of the well-known similar problem in a rectangular bar is done first using solid mechanics solutions of ideal cases. Finite element calculations are made of the residual stresses following plastic bending of a thick-walled cylinder, the effects of a temperature distribution, and the resultant changes in stresses and strains and the associated tube bending. Results from the two approaches for a 200 deg C temperature gradient show a maximum angular displacement of 0.004 to 0.008 deg/m and the displacement returning to zero as the thermal gradient diminishes with time Thermal Gradient, Thermal Stress, Thick-Walled Cylinder, Residual Stress, Finite Element Analysis.

Book Residual Stresses in an Overstrained Thick walled Cylinder

Download or read book Residual Stresses in an Overstrained Thick walled Cylinder written by Samuel J. Acquaviva and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radial and tangential residual stresses are determined as a function of stress relief temperature. Disks were sliced from a hydraulically overexpanded cylinder and subjected to various heat treatments. Residual stresses remaining after heat treatment were determined by removing material from the outer periphery of the disks. Strains were measured on the bore of the disk as a function of the amount of material removed. The maximum tangential residual stress at the bore was 55,000 psi with no stress relief treatment. At a stress relief temperature of 1050F, there was no measurable residual stress. (Author).

Book Residual Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders Resulting from Mechancially Induced Overstrain

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders Resulting from Mechancially Induced Overstrain written by T. E. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autofrettage is a process for inducing elastic response in thick-walled cylinders subjected tointernal pressures which otherwise cause plastic strains. To extend the use of autofrettage to higher pressure applications and to eliminate many of the problems encountered in the use of the conventional process based on the use of direct internal hydrostatic pressure, a new technique has been developed which utilizes the mechanical advantage of a silding wedge to produce the desired bore enlargement. Since the use of a sliding wedge or mandrel will induce shearing forces at the mandrel-cylinder interface, the resultant residual stress distribution will differ from that theoretically predicted as characteristic of the direct hydrostatic process. It is the purpose of this work to determine the residual stress distribution as a function of magnitude of overstrain and diameter ratio, and how it affects the reyielding characteristics of cylinders autofrettaged by this technique. Book Residual Stresses in Composite Materials

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Composite Materials written by Mahmood M. Shokrieh and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, light-weight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, in civil infrastructure and in sporting applications, it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first part of this important book reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. Various mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for calculation of residual stresses in composite materials are also presented. Chapters in the first section of the book discuss the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and a range of other types of composites. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses is discussed.Residual stresses in composite materials provides a comprehensive overview of this important topic, and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine and sporting industries. - Reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses - Discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and other types of composite - Considers the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses

Book Thru thickness Bending Stress Distribution at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Thru thickness Bending Stress Distribution at Elevated Temperatures written by Lee Conner Christian and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the bending of flange plate used for dapped girders some highway bridge fabricators are experiencing cracking of the flange plate particularly when heat is used in assisting the bending process. Due to the extreme strains experienced during the fabrication process, investigating this problem requires the use of a finite element analysis. The fabrication process was broken down into two parts, first the heating of the plate through the use of either a furnace or an acetylene torch (thermal), and the second was the bending process (structural). The five different temperatures collected during the thermal analysis were a uniform temperature of 75°F, a 1100°F uniform temperature as a result of furnace heating, both five and ten minutes of air-cooling after the plate had reached a uniform temperature of 1100°F, and the temperature gradient after heating the flange plate to a surface temperature of 1200°F though the use of an acetylene torch. After the thermal analysis was completed, the resulting temperatures were imported into the structural model. The plate thicknesses analyzed were one, one and a half, and two inches, assuming both 50 and 70 ksi yield strengths. To achieve a 90 degree six-inch radius bend the plate was bent in five separate locations. The result of this analysis showed that with the introduction of temperature gradients into the fabrication process, the strains along the plate's extreme fibers increased. The model further showed that for both a one and a half and two-inch thick plate the extreme fiber strains exceeded ten percent, which further adds to the increased risk of the flange plate cracking during fabrication. The highest residual stresses through the plate's thickness occurred during cold bending. The residual stresses through the plate's thickness decreased when the fabrication process was carried out at elevated temperatures. When steel exceeds a strain of 10 to 16 percent during the fabrication process, the plate becomes susceptible to cracking. This strain limit was exceeded for plate thicknesses of one and a half and two inches.
