Book excerpt: Correlations based upon empirical modified equations derived from kinetic theory were developed for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of gas mixtures. The conductivity equation was compared to 226 binary mixture conductivities in temperatures from 0 to 774 deg C from the literature and this work. The average deviation is 2.1%. In correlating conductivity data of mixtures of polyatomic molecules, the energy transport is considered in two parts, i.e., one protion transferred by collision and the other by diffusion. The proposed viscosity equation reproduces 103 binary data points with an average deviation of 1.3%. These equations are more consistent with experiment than existing correlations in the literature. the relation of the conductivity or viscosity to composition and temperature are discussed in the light of the proposed equations. It has been demonstrated that, at a given composition, the ratio of the measured conductivity to that calculated on the molar average basis for mixtures of most simple molecules and the ratio of the measured viscosity to that calculated on the molar average basis for mixtures of most gases should be nearly constant over a temperature range of 200 to 300 deg C. The thermal conductivity of ten gases and selected binary and ternary mixtures of them were measured in a concentric silver cylinder cell in the temperature range of 100 to 540 deg C The gases are He, A, N/sub 2/, O/sub 2/, CO/sub 2/, CH/sub 4/, C/sub 2/ H/sub 4/, C/sub 3/H/sub 8/, methyl ether, and methyl formats. Book Alignment Charts for Transport Properties Viscosity Thermal Conductivity and Diffusion Coefficients for Nonpolar Gases and Gas Mixtures at Low Density

Brokaw and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: In problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer of gases, the viscosities, thermal conductivities, and diffusion coefficients are required. Direct measurements are in any event time consuming--they may be impossible. Alignment charts (nomographs) for calculating the low-pressure transport properties of nonpolar gases and gas mixtures are presented. Calculations for pure gases are based on the rigorous kinetic theory of gases as applied to a realistic intermolecular force law. Mixture viscosities and conductivities are calculated from good approximations derived from rigorous theory. Properties can be calculated quickly with a precision of 2 percent or better. Accuracy depends on how well the constants characterizing the intermolecular force law are known; if constants are derived from experimental data, results should be accurate to 5 percent or better. Force constants for 65 gases are tabulated.

Book A Method for Calculating Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity of a Helium Xenon Gas Mixture

This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for calculating viscosity and thermal conductivity of a helium-xenon (He-Xe) gas mixture was employed, and results were compared to AiResearch (part of Honeywell) analytical data. The method of choice was that presented by Hirschfelder with Singh's third-order correction factor applied to thermal conductivity. Values for viscosity and thermal conductivity were calculated over a temperature range of 400 to 1200 K for He-Xe gas mixture molecular weights of 20.183, 39.94, and 83.8 kg/kmol. First-order values for both transport properties were in good agreement with AiResearch analytical data. Third-order-corrected thermal conductivity values were all greater than AiResearch data, but were considered to be a better approximation of thermal conductivity because higher-order effects of mass and temperature were taken into consideration. Viscosity, conductivity, and Prandtl number were then compared to experimental data presented by Taylor. Johnson, Paul K. Glenn Research Center NASA/CR-2006-214394, E-15672
