Download or read book Plays written by Anton Chekhov and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-09-03 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five masterful dramatic works from one of the world's best-loved playwrights, including The Seagull—now a major motion picture starring Saoirse Ronan, Elizabeth Moss, and Annette Bening At a time when the Russian theatre was dominated by formulaic melodramas and farces, Chekhov created a new sort of drama that laid bare the everyday lives, loves and yearnings of ordinary people. Ivanov depicts a man stifled by inactivity and lost idealism, and The Seagull contrasts a young man's selfish romanticism with the stoicism of a woman cruelly abandoned by her lover. With 'the scenes from country life' of Uncle Vanya, his first fully mature play, Chekhov developed his own unique dramatic world, neither tragedy nor comedy. In Three Sisters the Prozorov sisters endlessly dream of going to Moscow to escape the monotony of provincial life, while his comedy The Cherry Orchard portrays characters futilely clinging to the past as their land is sold from underneath them. In this edition Peter Carson's moving translations convey Chekhov's subtle blend of comedy, tragedy and psychological insight, while Richard Gilman's introduction examines how Chekhov broke with theatrical conventions and discusses each play in detail. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

As a result of the encounter, Sean Smith becomes the wrong-way driver's first victim when he is run off the highway trying to avoid a head-on collision. Minutes later, Charles Washington suffers the same fate just a few miles down the road. When the dust finally settles, one of them is killed and the other is critically injured. While the families of the two men struggle to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, the driver who caused the carnage has simply disappeared into the dead of night. Police discover skid marks from the assailant's car at one accident scene but not the other. Detectives are immediately suspicious that perhaps this was no random accident. They hesitate initially to call it murder. But when it is discovered that one of the victims has had threats made against his life by someone reputed to have ties to organized crime, this affirms for the detectives that they are, in fact, on the right trail. All who are close to the case agree: this method of murder is beyond bizarre.

Just a few examples would include losing my parents at a young age, having to work two jobs to survive, and graduating from college at the age of sixty-eight. Also, since 2003, I have suffered from debilitating illnesses, including five heart attacks and being paralyzed from the waist down. One doctor described me as being immortal, and another one told my family that I would be dead within twenty-four hours if an infection in my blood system could not be located. My medical history from one hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, is over six hundred pages long. However, Challenges Accepted is not just about my misfortunes. What is more important is how I grew stronger with each hardship and was able to recover from tragedies. Please join me as I travel back along my journey of life. It is my hope that you will be inspired by my book and it will help you overcome the hardships that you may encounter in your life. PS: Did I mention that my story is interwoven with humor?

Book excerpt: My Wingmen is a true account of my journey with angels. They entered my world during a period of inner reflection as I researched personal growth during a challenging life transition. The books I was drawn to came alive as I read about alternate realities and spiritual concepts. I witnessed these realities as my home became a stomping ground for angels and spirit guides, where I enjoyed their appearances and intervention. They showed me how to interpret and discern the lighter side of the earth realm, and they gave me examples of what clear expanded believing could accomplish. As I began to openly talk about prayer, my psychic senses began to blossom. I was embraced by two angels, and they offered me healing along with their companionship. They have become my teachers, and they have helped me connect with truths beyond my wildest dreams. It was in expanded thought that I was able to grasp a world that is clearer to me now, as this present-day drama fades to black. I have opened my arms to an enlightened world, because where there is love, there is no room for fear. Meet my wingmen, Archangel Michael and Archangel Raphael.

Book Vince Flynn Collectors Edition 4

Download or read book Vince Flynn Collectors Edition 4 written by Vince Flynn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-12-06 with total page 1321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this special collectors’ edition, relive the action in Vince Flynn’s #1 New York Times bestselling political thrillers: Extreme Measures, Pursuit of Honor, and American Assassin. Extreme Measures In the secretive world where fearless men and women wage a daily covert war, the CIA has intercepted two terrorist cells--but a third, led by a dangerous mastermind, is feared to be on the loose. Counterterrorist agent Mitch Rapp joins forces with a warrior as dedicated—and lethal—as they come: ex-Marine and elite operative Mike Nash. Both Rapp and Nash have stared down the jihadist culture of death. Both have saved thousands of lives without accolades or acknowledgment of their personal sacrifices. But the political winds have changed on Capitol Hill, and certain leaders want Mitch Rapp put back on a short leash. And when a nightmare scenario descends on Washington, D.C., Rapp and Nash will follow new rules of engagement: their own. Pursuit of Honor When Washington, D.C.'s National Counterterrorism Center is struck by a series of devastating explosions, the results are catastrophic—185 killed, including public officials and CIA employees. Such an act of extreme violence calls for extreme measures—and elite counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp, joining forces with trusted team member Mike Nash, finds himself in the frustrating position of having to illustrate the realities of national security to government officials up in arms over the agents who rushed in to save countless American lives. Meanwhile, with three al-Qaeda terrorists still at large and Nash traumatized by the horrors he witnessed during the attack, Rapp must help his friend while threading his way through the naysayers on Capitol Hill—and silently, swiftly, do what he must for the sake of his country and the pursuit of honor. American Assassin Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist’s worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world...and then tragedy struck. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.
