Book excerpt: Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine, in a real life setting, how past life experiences influence the psychological outcomes of sport-related injury rehabilitation and return to play in one collegiate athlete. Research in the realm of predictive factors of psychological outcomes is lacking in the sports medicine world. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this study was to examine one athlete to find potential predictors of these outcomes. Methods: Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) provided the theoretical framework for this study. All data was analyzed within the constraints laid out by SDT's ideas of competence, relatedness, and autonomy as well as the SDT continuum. This case report was also situated within a phenomenological epistemology in order to examine the phenomenon within its real life context. Four semi-structured interviews, unstructured interviews, observation/field note journal, and daily athletic training room notes provided all of the data used within this study. Results: After comparing, contrasting, and triangulating all of the data sources there were three major themes which emerged. They are: competence, social support, and life after football. The competence theme as well as its sub-themes demonstrated that competence is essential to Alvin not just in football but also in all aspects of his life. The second theme, social support, also had two sub-themes; these helped to demonstrate that social support acted as a secondary source of motivation but did not directly foster motivation. The last theme and its sub-themes showed us that Alvin views his experiences as a collegiate football player as a better way to get him to the next aspect of his life, which does not include football. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the results that competence is the most important motivating factor for Alvin; almost all of his motivation was fostered from his feelings of competence. Secondly, autonomy is not important to Alvin and even had detrimental effects on his motivation and mood during rehabilitation. Social support (relatedness) acted in a maintenance role for Alvin's motivation, lining up with previous research. Finally, it can be concluded that each athlete's rehabilitation should be approached in a individual manner and a tool to assess an athletes motivational sources prior to rehabilitation could aid the athletic trainer throughout the rehabilitation process.

I was going to buy a gun, load the thing, place the barrel in my mouth, and blow my fucking brains out. I sat on my parents’ sofa as I pondered this. All I needed was a gun. And then all-- of my problems-- would be solved.
