Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve ever seen a dog in a television commercial, there’s a pretty good chance it was a Border Collie. Or, if you’ve watched herding competitions, you’ve probably seen a Border Collie controlling the herd. First and foremost, Border Collies are sheep herders. But when they’re not on the clock, they can make excellent companions. They’re energetic, playful, and extremely intelligent. They’re also sensitive, affectionate, and adorable. Even though this breed is still vital to livestock owners, we will focus on the Border Collie as a pet in this book. Intelligence is perhaps the most prominent trait of the Border Collie. In the pasture, this dog can understand specific commands and respond accordingly. They also excel at obedience competitions and agility runs because they can pick up new skills quickly and respond to challenging commands. This book will give you the information you need to jump-start your ownership journey, including: Border Collie History Choosing a Border Collie Preparing your Home for your Border Collie Bringing Home your Border Collie Being a Puppy Parent Housetraining Socializing with People and Animals Border Collies and Your Other Pets Physical and Mental Exercise Training your Border Collie Basic Commands Dealing With Unwanted Behaviors Traveling with Border Collies Nutrition Grooming your Border Collie Basic Health Care Advanced Border Collie Health and Aging Dog Care This book will become your go-to guide throughout your BC’s life, as it has helpful hints and reminders that will prove to be practical far into their adulthood. Border Collies are an absolute joy to have as pets. These dogs are beautiful, intelligent, and silly. They love to test their owners and call the shots, but at the end of the day, they’re capable of following orders. You’ll never find another dog quite like them, as they’re capable of running around one minute and snuggling up beside you the next. All your Border Collie wants is a purpose. While they may drive you nuts when they’re bored, it’s amazing to watch them work. Whether your Border Collie’s “job” is to tend livestock, chase the rabbits and birds from your garden, or just be a loving companion, you’ll find that your Border Collie will do anything for the love and affection with which you pay them.

The stories of these remarkable dogs—including an eighty-pound bloodhound who sang arias for the neighbors—and the joy they bring to Cara and her family (along with a few chewed sofa cushions) fill the pages of this touching and inspiring book. When asked how she can possibly say goodbye to that many lovable pups, Cara says, “If I don’t give this one away, I can’t possibly save another.” Filled with humanity and hope, Another Good Dog will take the reader on a journey of smiles, laughs, and tears—and lead us to wonder how many other good dogs are out there and what we can do to help.

  • Author : John W. Pilley
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2014-11-03
  • ISBN : 1780747039

Download or read book Chaser written by John W. Pilley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaser has a way with words. She knows over a thousand of them—more than any other animal of any species except humans. In addition to common nouns like house, ball, and tree, she has memorized the names of more than one thousand toys and can retrieve any of them on command. Based on that learning, she and her owner and trainer, retired psychologist John Pilley, have moved on to further impressive feats, demonstrating her ability to understand sentences with multiple elements of grammar and to learn new behaviors by imitation. John’s ingenuity and tenacity as a researcher are as impressive as Chaser’s accomplishments. His groundbreaking approach has opened the door to a new understanding of animal intelligence, one that requires us to reconsider what actually goes on in a dog’s mind. Chaser’s achievements reveal her use of deductive reasoning and complex problem-solving skills to address novel challenges. Yet astonishingly, Chaser isn’t unique. John’s training methods can be adopted by any dog lover. Through the poignant story of how he trained Chaser, raised her as a member of the Pilley family, and proved her abilities to the scientific community, he reveals the positive impact of incorporating learning into play and more effectively channeling a dog’s natural drives. John’s work with Chaser offers a fresh perspective on what’s possible in the relationship between a dog and a human. His story points us toward a new way of relating to our canine companions that takes into account our evolving understanding of the way animals and humans learn.

Book Save Dogs from Distemper

Download or read book Save Dogs from Distemper written by Ed Bond and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s in the desert community of Lancaster, California, Dr. Alson Sears had been overwhelmed with cases of canine distemper, resulting in "boxes and boxes" of dead dogs despite trying every treatment he could find. Then a paper about using Newcastle's Disease Vaccine to induce interferon in cats gave him a flash of insight. Dr. Sears made an attempt to create interferon in dogs, but it did not work out the way he planned. A laboratory test concluded the resulting sample did not include interferon, but by then Dr. Sears had already saved a distemper dog with his NDV serum. After treating and saving more distemper dogs, he realized he had created an unknown material with lifesaving properties. But Dr. Sears lacked the training and connections to properly document his treatment, and the experts only dismissed his discovery as "impossible." So, he quietly treated hundreds of dogs over the next few decades, drawing little attention to himself. But then in 1997, he treated and saved a dog that belonged to Ed Bond, a freelance L.A. Times reporter at the time, who eventually would draw the story out of Dr. Sears. After posting a website about the treatment in 2000, Ed Bond kept hearing from people whose dogs were being saved. When a vet in Romania followed Dr. Sears' protocols on the edbond.com website and saved at least 5 dogs with it, the light bulb went on for Ed. In December 2008, Ed launched a campaign to Save Dogs From Distemper that circled the globe and involved hundreds of dog owners and rescuers, as well as dozens of veterinarians and professionals. This is a story of hope for owners of distemper dogs that explains what Ed has learned about canine distemper and why many more distemper dogs can be saved.

Book For the Love of a Dog

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
  • Publisher : Ballantine Books
  • Release : 2009-07-22
  • ISBN : 0307420574
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book For the Love of a Dog written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-07-22 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, humans and canines are different species, but current research provides fascinating, irrefutable evidence that what we share with our dogs is greater than how we vary. As behaviorist and zoologist Dr. Patricia McConnell tells us in this remarkable new book about emotions in dogs and in people, more and more scientists accept the premise that dogs have rich emotional lives, exhibiting a wide range of feelings including fear, anger, surprise, sadness, and love. In For the Love of a Dog, McConnell suggests that one of the reasons we love dogs so much is that they express emotions in ways similar to humans. After all, who can communicate joy better than a puppy? But not all emotional expressions are obvious, and McConnell teaches both beginning dog owners and experienced dog lovers how to read the more subtle expressions hidden behind fuzzy faces and floppy ears. For those of us who deeply cherish our dogs but are sometimes baffled by their behavior, For the Love of a Dog will come as a revelation–a treasure trove of useful facts, informed speculation, and intriguing accounts of man’s best friend at his worst and at his very best. Readers will discover how fear, anger, and happiness underlie the lives of both people and dogs and, most important, how understanding emotion in both species can improve the relationship between them. Thus McConnell introduces us to the possibility of a richer, more rewarding relationship with our dogs. While we may never be absolutely certain what our dogs are feeling, with the help of this riveting book we can understand more than we ever thought possible. Those who consider their dogs part of the family will find For the Love of a Dog engaging, enlightening, and utterly engrossing.
