Download or read book There I Was and Here I Am written by Todd M. Howe and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There I Was and Here I Am speaks to a life's journey. The story is about triumph over adversity - following the course of a young boy from a poor family with the dream of flying. The story follows him through his life's pursuit of that dream. The book is divided into the four seasons of life. Each season begins with the life cycle of a drop of water, starting as a snowflake and ending in the sea. It also deals with the two powerful forces always at work inside each of us - a good and a bad wolf, each fighting for dominance. Spring takes him from a troubled childhood and difficult times in the early school years to his enlistment into the United States Marine Corps, his service in Vietnam at just nineteen years of age, his return back to the "real world" and his struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Summer follows him into college, Air Force Reserve Officers Training and the overcoming of numerous obstacles along the way. It also follows his entrance into and successfully completion of Air Force pilot training, his career in the Air Force and an emotional breakdown experienced during the transition from military service into civilian life. Fall finds our hero searching for a job flying with an airline company and summarizes the challenges he faces in his pursuit of happiness. It culminates with the successful completion of both - the winning of those elusive dreams. Winter - the shortest chapter - is about his retirement, family, children, friends he made along the way and some brief reflections. It may seem like fiction at times. It is not. It is completely true and accurate to each fact and detail. There are many bizarre events along the way, including the people who come into his life and leave, only to return again. He comes through the entire experience and realizes how he has been blessed beyond all measure - even or perhaps because of - all the hoops he had to jump through to get him there. All the while, he recognizes he has a guardian angel who is watching over him. It is a beacon for readers looking for direction in their lives. It reminds us all to never accept "no" for an answer, but instead, to view it as a challenge. You will be reminded to never give up on yourself or your dreams and to never give less than one hundred percent of yourself in the search of life. It will make you believe that dreams can come true, but they don't just come to you. You have to actively seek them out and work hard for them.

Book Here I Am

Download or read book Here I Am written by Alan Huffman and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Not only does Huffman bring Tim back to life . . . but he also leads us through some of the most harrowing combat of our generation” (Sebastian Junger, New York Times–bestselling author of Tribe). Tim Hetherington (1970–2011) was one of the world’s most distinguished and dedicated photojournalists, whose career was tragically cut short when he died in a mortar blast while covering the Libyan Civil War. Someone far less interested in professional glory than revealing to the world the realities of people living in extremely difficult circumstances, Hetherington nonetheless won many awards for his war reporting, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his critically acclaimed documentary, Restrepo. In Here I Am, Alan Huffman tells Hetherington’s life story, and through it analyses, what it means to be a war reporter in the twenty-first century. Huffman recounts the camerman’s life from his first interest in photography and war reporting, through his critical role in reporting the Liberian Civil War, to his tragic death in Libya. Huffman also traces Hetherington’s photographic milestones, from his iconic and prize-winning pictures of Liberian children, to the celebrated portraits of sleeping US soldiers in Afghanistan. “A powerfully written biography . . . This is poignant imagery and metaphor for the entire body of this extraordinary artist and humanist’s life.” —The Huffington Post “Huffman excels at heightening the drama, depicting the rapid-fire action and constant danger of working among soldiers and guerrillas engaged in battle.” —The Boston Globe “Huffman vividly chronicles the short life of a man drawn to danger zones to capture the horrors of modern warfare.” —Los Angeles Times “Celebrate[s] Tim Hetherington’s life . . . Recount[s] his last days in Libya in excruciating detail.” —Time

Download or read book Here I Am written by Jonathan Safran Foer and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monumental novel from the bestselling author of Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Jonathan Safran Foer's Here I Am In the book of Genesis, when God calls out, “Abraham!” before ordering him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, Abraham responds, “Here I am.” Later, when Isaac calls out, “My father!” before asking him why there is no animal to slaughter, Abraham responds, “Here I am.” How do we fulfill our conflicting duties as father, husband, and son; wife and mother; child and adult? Jew and American? How can we claim our own identities when our lives are linked so closely to others’? These are the questions at the heart of Jonathan Safran Foer’s first novel in eleven years—a work of extraordinary scope and heartbreaking intimacy. Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in present-day Washington, D.C., Here I Am is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. As Jacob and Julia Bloch and their three sons are forced to confront the distances between the lives they think they want and the lives they are living, a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a quickly escalating conflict in the Middle East. At stake is the meaning of home—and the fundamental question of how much aliveness one can bear. Showcasing the same high-energy inventiveness, hilarious irreverence, and emotional urgency that readers loved in his earlier work, Here I Am is Foer’s most searching, hard-hitting, and grandly entertaining novel yet. It not only confirms Foer’s stature as a dazzling literary talent but reveals a novelist who has fully come into his own as one of our most important writers. “Dazzling . . . A profound novel about the claims of identity, history, family, and the burdens of a broken world.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s “Fresh Air”
