Book excerpt: From the acclaimed, award-winning author—when a dinner-party guest named Miles locks himself in an upstairs room and refuses to come out, he sets off a media frenzy. He also sets in motion a mesmerizing puzzle of a novel, one that harnesses acrobatic verbal playfulness to a truly affecting story. Miles communicates only by cryptic notes slipped under the door. We see him through the eyes of four people who barely know him, ranging from a precocious child to a confused elderly woman. But while the characters’ wit and wordplay soar, their story remains profoundly grounded. As it probes our paradoxical need for both separation and true connection, There but for the balances cleverness with compassion, the surreal with the deeply, movingly real, in a way that only Ali Smith can.

Book The Doctrines of Grace

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Montgomery Boice
  • Publisher : Crossway
  • Release : 2009-04-01
  • ISBN : 1433517353
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book The Doctrines of Grace written by James Montgomery Boice and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no question that we live in an age of weak theology and casual Christianity. We have substituted intuition for truth, feeling for belief and immediate gratification for enduring hope. Evangelicalism desperately needs to return to the doctrines that once before reformed the world: radical depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption, efficacious grace and persevering grace. James Boice and Philip Ryken not only provide a compelling exposition on these doctrines of grace, but also look briefly at their historical impact. The authors leave no doubt that the church suffers when these foundational truths are neglected and that she must return to a Christianity that is practical-minded, kind-hearted, and most importantly, biblically based.

Book There s Nothing There But Nothing Is Really Something

Download or read book There s Nothing There But Nothing Is Really Something written by Andrew Fletcher and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's nothing there. Kind of a wild claim. I'm not going to give it away here in the introduction. Then you wouldn't have to read the book. It seemed like a reasonable assumption for everyone to make that there was actually something there. I mean, you could see it. The sun. The moon. The planets. Their moons. Other stars. The Milky Way. Eventually, other galaxies. Lots and lots of galaxies. Gazillions. And back here on Earth, all kinds of things. Flowers. Rainbows. Laughing children. Young love. Plus, wars and genocides and tsunamis and lava flow and zits. Reality shows. The Kardashians. There was clearly something there. Turns out, not so much. Everything you think is there is not really there the way that you think it should be. Do all the scientists agree with that observation? Turns out, pretty much. So what do all the scientists think is actually there? Now that's where it gets interesting. You'll enjoy this.

My husband of eight years is in harm's way, fighting a war in Iraq; my three children rely on me to be mother and father, and the doctor says, "Mrs. Hill, we found cancer." This feeling is unfamiliar to me. My hands are cold, palms are sweating, head thumping, heart racing, and I can't breathe. It's fear, and I know it is, and it's lurking around every corner. It has me trapped. I'm scared to go to sleep, and I'm scared to wake up. The ground all around me is sinking, about to swallow me up. All I did was wake up one day. I am under attack, and I can't see the attacker. He is everywhere, and I feel him getting closer. I smell him. It's the smell of hatred. No! It's the smell of death. I can't give up. I can't let him catch me. He is after me, and he wants me dead. Read about Lindsay's journey and how she travels the only road available to her.

Book The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

Download or read book The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows written by John Koenig and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “It’s undeniably thrilling to find words for our strangest feelings…Koenig casts light into lonely corners of human experience…An enchanting book. “ —The Washington Post A truly original book in every sense of the word, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows poetically defines emotions that we all feel but don’t have the words to express—until now. Have you ever wondered about the lives of each person you pass on the street, realizing that everyone is the main character in their own story, each living a life as vivid and complex as your own? That feeling has a name: “sonder.” Or maybe you’ve watched a thunderstorm roll in and felt a primal hunger for disaster, hoping it would shake up your life. That’s called “lachesism.” Or you were looking through old photos and felt a pang of nostalgia for a time you’ve never actually experienced. That’s “anemoia.” If you’ve never heard of these terms before, that’s because they didn’t exist until John Koenig set out to fill the gaps in our language of emotion. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows “creates beautiful new words that we need but do not yet have,” says John Green, bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars. By turns poignant, relatable, and mind-bending, the definitions include whimsical etymologies drawn from languages around the world, interspersed with otherworldly collages and lyrical essays that explore forgotten corners of the human condition—from “astrophe,” the longing to explore beyond the planet Earth, to “zenosyne,” the sense that time keeps getting faster. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is for anyone who enjoys a shift in perspective, pondering the ineffable feelings that make up our lives. With a gorgeous package and beautiful illustrations throughout, this is the perfect gift for creatives, word nerds, and human beings everywhere.

Book excerpt: Dont believe the hype; believe what you see. Apocalypse, as we have come to fear, is not apocalypse as it truly is. We live today in the time of apocalypse, and for some, it is pure torment. For those around the world living with bombs raining down on them, yes, that is apocalyptic torture as we feared. For those thousands and millions, throughout the universe, visited and killed by the deadly flu and flu-like diseases (SARS, swine flu, bird flu, West Nile virus, etc.), Ebola, tuberculosis, measles, cholera, dengue fever, EV-D68, and HIV/AIDS, yes, those are apocalyptic diseases as we feared. For those ravished, killed, left homeless, and totally dispossessed by these record-breaking seemingly wicked weather events we are currently experiencing, yes, they would agree that these are for certain apocalyptic changes as we feared. However, given there are over seven billion of us on the planet and those apocalyptic events mentioned have only killed millions, not billions, of us, they dont seem to rise to the level of chaos and destruction we have been conditioned to fear as being apocalyptic. Nevertheless, our over exaggerated, deep-seated, and conditioned fears notwithstanding, Armageddon is upon us, and the signs of it have been for almost twenty years that we know of. Those above mentioned apocalyptic occurrences are the signs we were all told would be by John the Revelator in Revelation. November 1995 to May 1996, no fewer than seventy of us were told by an angel, Awaki, and his Angels of God that the signs had already begun and that Armageddon would begin in the year 2000. Our story, no matter how far-fetched it may seem, is true. The evidentiary events of war, disease, and bizarre weather changes we witness daily provide for us the credibility of what we were told. The angel Shakardak told us, Some will see and they will believe, some will not see and they will believe, some will hear and they will believe, and some will not hear and they will believe; and then there will be those who will see and they will not believe, and there will be those who will hear and they will not believe.
