Download or read book The Bible and Criticism in Victorian Britain written by John W. Rogerson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the F.D. Maurice lectures for 1992 and six Gifford lectures of 1994. The Maurice lectures present the first account of Maurice as an Old Testament interpreter. The lectures on Smith concentrate upon his theological interests as an interpreter of the Bible, as well as the first account based on unpublished material of Smith's activity as a preacher. There is also a close investigation of Smith's links with Germany, and the influence upon him of Richard Rothe is investigated in some detail for the first time. One of the aims of the book is to show how, in their different ways, Maurice and Smith tried to relate the Old Testament to the two different periods of Victorian Britain in which they lived. The book also is intended as a further contribution to our knowledge of the history of biblical criticism in Britain.
Download or read book Theology of the Old Testament written by John Rogerson and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should Christians approach the Old Testament? Should we use it to reconstruct what people believed several millennia ago? Or should we ask what the Old Testament says to us today and consider how it addresses today's world? J. W. Rogerson firmly believes that we should take the latter approach. Rogerson, an internationally respected scholar, has dedicated much of his academic life to probing the possibility of the abiding significance of the Old Testament. He shows how texts written for a strange and distant world with different social, religious and cultural factors can still speak to moral issues today.

Download or read book The Development of Anglican Moral Theology 1680 1950 written by Peter H. Sedgwick and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Development of Anglican Moral Theology is the successor volume to The Origins of Anglican Moral Theology. It describes how Anglican theologians interacted closely with the moral philosophers of their day while providing a pastoral resource in the fast-changing period between 1680-1950. The book shows how vibrant and intellectually rigorous the tradition was, and includes detailed studies of the sermons of Butler, Wesley and Newman, the writings of William Law and Coleridge, and the later work of Maurice, Gore, Scott Holland, Moberly, William Temple and Kirk. This is the first account of this lively tradition of moral theology.
Download or read book F D Maurice and Unitarianism written by David Young and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: F.D. Maurice (1805-72) was one of Victorian Britain's most controversial thinkers. Although he came from a Unitarian family and counted leading Unitarians as his friends, their influence on his work has never been seriously examined. The purpose of this new book is to look at his life and teaching in the light of Unitarianism. Maurice's faith had a distinctly Christological emphasis, but he continued to value his Unitarian heritage. His concern with the Fatherhood of God and the dignity of the human race owes much to his family background. Young's study opens with a compact history of Unitarianism during the lifetimes of Maurice and his father, a Unitarian minister. A series of biographical sketches draws on hitherto unpublished material to set Maurice's work in its historic context. Final chapters compare the central themes of his theology with the teaching of his Unitarian contemporaries.
