Book excerpt: Until now we have only had relatively narrow economic studies comparing investments in railways with investments in other fields of individual economies. 'Across the Borders' not only opens the door for fundamental new insights into a trans-national view of railway history, but also contributes to a breakthrough in the wider study of the subject, providing the first extensive historical investigation of the worldwide system of railway financing. This book provides a wide introduction to how financiers, governments and entrepreneurs in Europe managed to face the challenges of constructing and maintaining an integrated railway network, both in their own countries and their colonies. This volume offers analysis from a selection of experts exploring the trans-national investment policies of railway construction based on numerous historical case-studies. The chapters provide insight into the international opportunities that existed for railway financing, from the perspective of economic, social, transport and railway history. With contributions from authors from 19 countries the volume is a truly international work that will be of interest to academic researchers, museum staff, archivists, and anyone who has an interest in the history and development of railways.

Book The New Economic History of the Railways Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The New Economic History of the Railways Routledge Revivals written by Patrick O'Brien and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, first published in 1977, contrasts new and older approaches to the history of transport and outlines a critical exposition of the methods used to quantify the contribution of railways to economic growth by means of counterfactual speculation and the measurement of social savings. The author also outlines and appraises an alternative measure of the impact of railways, namely the social rate of return on capital invested in railways. The final chapters are concerned with the effects on growth generated by the construction and diffusion of railways through expenditure on labour, capital goods and industrial inputs and through their effects on the integration of markets, and patterns of location.

Book American Railways as Investments

Download or read book American Railways as Investments written by Carl Snyder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railways as Investments: A Detailed and Comparative Analysis of All the Leading Railways, From the Investor's Point, of View; With an Introductory Chapter on the Methods of Estimating Railway Values The aim of this work is to provide the general investor, the banker and the investment broker with the means whereby he may judge intelligently and readily, so far as the accessible facts will permit, of the value of the securities of the different railroads passed under review. The volume covers the operations of nearly 200,000 miles of road, or about 90% of the total for the country. More especial attention, and detail, has naturally been given to the more important lines and systems, on the theory that they present greater opportunities for safe investment, greater stability, wider fluctuations in value and therefore larger opportunities for profit, with less liability to suffer from the minor accidents of trade reverses, manipulation or bad management. At the end of each analysis or review, conclusions and opinions are offered, but only for what they are worth; that is to say, all the material facts upon which these conclusions are based have been given in full. The details, the figures, the tables are there; the investor may therefore judge for himself as to the validity of the conclusions reached. The inductions offered are suggestions and nothing more. The aim has been to provide the broadest possible basis of judgment, to offer the largest perspective, to cut out that which is evanescent, not to look at last year's results or this year's conditions merely, but to consider what has been done through a series of years, and under varying conditions. Only in this wise is it possible to frame any intelligent opinion of the future. Tendencies do not rapidly change. Established roads do not suddenly become great earners; they do not as a rule radically change their policies, save under a radical change of ownership. On the other hand, companies do not default their bonds, they do not pass their dividends, unless conditions have been preparing for such a result. Book From Dickens to Dracula

Download or read book From Dickens to Dracula written by Gail Turley Houston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging from the panoramic novels of Dickens to the horror of Dracula, Gail Turley Houston examines the ways in which the language and imagery of economics, commerce and banking are transformed in Victorian Gothic fiction, and traces literary and uncanny elements in economic writings of the period. Houston shows how banking crises were often linked with ghosts or inexplicable non-human forces and financial panic was figured through Gothic or supernatural means. In Little Dorrit and Villette characters are literally haunted by money, while the unnameable intimations of Dracula and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are represented alongside realist economic concerns. Houston pays particular attention to the term 'panic' as it moved between its double uses as a banking term and a defining emotion in sensational and Gothic fiction. This stimulating interdisciplinary book reveals that the worlds of Victorian economics and Gothic fiction, seemingly separate, actually complemented and enriched each other.
