Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponds (lagoons) have been used for centuries with great success in the treatment of wastewater. Ponds created for treatment, known as stabilization ponds, model the physical and biochemical interactions that occur in natural ponds. Easy to build and manage, stabilization ponds can accommodate large fluctuations in flow, and provide results that are

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of pond technology is now recognized globally and indeed is undergoing a renaissance at the present time. It was therefore no surprise that scientists and engineers from over 25 countries presented their most recent findings at the Marrakech conference. The choice of Morocco was especially appropriate as it, like most countries of the Magreb, has actively endorsed and implemented the use of waste stabilization ponds as a preferred wastewater treatment technology. The need to reuse treated wastewater is a key component of the water cycle in such water-short regions, and the crucial role that ponds can play in the safe reuse of effluents, particularly for agriculture, has also been recognized and supported by active research at institutions all round the world. This issue contains a selection of the papers presented both in the oral and poster sessions at the conference and should prove very informative for those who wish to keep abreast of developments in the field. Among the 52 papers selected from the oral and poster sessions for these proceedings are work on the performance of ponds systems worldwide, pond microbiology, nutrient removal, pond sludges and sediments, pond design and modeling, high-rate ponds, and effluent reuse.

Book Notes on the Design and Operation of Waste Stabilization Ponds in Warm Climates of Developing Countries

Download or read book Notes on the Design and Operation of Waste Stabilization Ponds in Warm Climates of Developing Countries written by J. P. Arthur and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper acknowledges that water carriage sewerage systems are not always the most appropriate sanitation solution for the disposal of liquid domestic wastes in developing countries. However, where water carriage systems are proposed, the first treatment option which should always be considered is the use of stabilization ponds, because in many instances, they represent the most cost effective and efficient way of treating domestic sewage flows. The paper results from a review of pond systems installed in six countries and concludes that: (i) designs differ widely; (ii) maximum use is not made of anaerobic ponds or the reuse potential of effluents; (iii) pond systems are frequently grossly overdesigned; and (iv) the designs are not responsive to the incremental growth encountered in LDCs. Practical design criteria are given for pond systems over a range of ambient temperature conditions and end use requirements together with notes on start up procedures, operation and trouble shooting. The recommendations are derived in part from the Israeli experience where considerable use is made of treated sewage effluent for irrigation purposes.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algae Abstracts is the first in a series of bibliographies on water re sources and pollution published by IFI/ Plenum Data Corporation in cooperation with the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC). It is produced wholly from the information base compris ing material abstracted and indexed for Selected Water Resources Abstracts. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.

Book Development of Design Criteria for Waste Stabilization Ponds Final Report

Download or read book Development of Design Criteria for Waste Stabilization Ponds Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste stabilization ponds have been used for many years as primary, secondary, and even tertiary sewage treatment devices; however, data for their economical and efficient design and operation have been lacking. The problem of developing rational design criteria for stabilization ponds was attacked on a broad basis; information from prior and contemporary investigators was collected and studied, factors thought to be important in stabilization pond processes were investigated in laboratory models and in outdoor pilot plants, and data reported since 1950 on pond installations at 188 communities throughout the State of Texas were compiled for statistical analysis. From these three sources of information along with certain theoretical considerations, empirical relations were formulated for the design and operation of a specific type of waste stabilization pond within a certain range of climatic conditions. The type of stabilization pond finally adopted for study was one in which the algal population density is low and bacterial stabilization of organic waste materials takes place largely under anaerobic conditions, since surface reaeration and photosynthetic oxygenation cannot satisfy the imposed biochemical oxygen demand in such systems. Design criteria are summarized. (auth).
