Book excerpt: Molecular Biophysics presents the fundamental principles of biophysics and their application to the study of the physical properties of biological macromolecules. The merger of biology and physics involves the development of sophisticated instrumentation and the molecular approach to the study of life phenomena. This book is composed of nine chapters and begins with an overview of the thermodynamical aspects and chemical foundations of biophysics. These topics are followed by the physical aspects of macromolecules, with a particular emphasis on the biological functions, conformation, and hydrophobic interactions of proteins. The subsequent chapter describes the structural and electro-optical properties of biopolymers based on X-ray, optical, and spectroscopic analysis. The discussion then shifts to enzymes, their chemical kinetics, catalytic potential, and conformational and cooperative properties. The remaining chapters explore the physical aspects of nucleic acids and the biosynthesis of proteins. This book will prove useful to molecular biophysicists, biologists, physicists, and researchers in the fields of life sciences.

Book Highlights in Condensed Matter Physics and Future Prospects

Download or read book Highlights in Condensed Matter Physics and Future Prospects written by Leo Esaki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the first NATO Science Forum "Highlights of the Eighties and Future Prospects in Condensed Matter Physics" (sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division), which took place in September, 1990, in the pleasant surroundings provided by the Hotel du Palais at Biarritz, France. One hundred distinguished physicists from seventeen countries, including six Nobellaureates, were invited to participate in the four and a half day meeting. Focusing on three evolving frontiers: semiconductor quantum structures, including the subject of the quantumHall effect (QHE), high temperature superconductivity (HiTc) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), the Forum provided an opportunity to evaluate, in depth, each of the frontiers, by reviewing the progress made during the last few years and, more importantly, exploring their implications for the future. Though serious scientists are not "prophets," all of the participants showed a strong interest in this unique format and addressed the questions of future prospects, either by extrapolating from what has been known, or by a stretch of their "educated" imagination.

Book Best Of Soviet Semiconductor Physics And Technology 1989 1990

Download or read book Best Of Soviet Semiconductor Physics And Technology 1989 1990 written by Michael S Shur and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-12-08 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year a large number of first rate articles on the physics and technology of semiconductor devices, written by Soviet experts in the field, are published. However, due to the lack of exchange and personal contact, most of these, unfortunately, are neglected by many scientists from the United States, Japan as well as Western Europe. Consequently, many important developments in semiconductor physics are missed by the Western world. This book is a serious attempt to bridge the gap between the Soviet and Western scientific communities. Most of all, it is an effort towards facilitating the communication and sharing of knowledge amongst people from different parts of the world. Ultimately, the aim is to contribute towards the building of a better world for all — one where the knowledge of advanced technology and scientific discoveries is used to improve the quality of life and not the pursuit of selfish mutually destructive behavior. For those in the field who wish to partake in this exchange of knowledge and as a gesture of support for their Soviet counterparts, the reading of this book provides the first step.

Book Quantum Theory of Chemical Reactions

Download or read book Quantum Theory of Chemical Reactions written by R. Daudel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise is devoted to an analysis of the present state of the quantum theory of chemical reactions. It will be divided into three volumes and will contain the contributions to an international seminar organized by the editors. The first one, is concerned with the fundamental problems which occur when studying a gas phase reaction or a reaction for which the solvent effect is not taken into account. The two first papers show how the collision theory can be used to predict the behaviour of interacting small molecules. For large molecules the complete calculations are not possible. We can only estimate the reaction path by calculating important areas of the potential surfaces. Four papers are concerned with this important pro cess. Furthermore, in one of these, the electronic reorganization which occurs along the reaction path is carefully analyzed. ~~o papers are devoted to the discussion of general rules as aromaticity rules, symmetry rules. The last two papers are concerned with the electrostatic molecular poten tial method which is the modern way of using static indices to establish relations between structure and chemical reactivity. Volume II will be devoted to a detailed analysis of the role of the solvent and volume III will present important applications as reaction mechanisms, photochemistry, catalysis, biochemical reactions and drug design. SOME RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MOLECULAR TREATMENT OF ATOM-ATOM COLLISIONS.
