Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical theory of control became a ?eld of study half a century ago in attempts to clarify and organize some challenging practical problems and the methods used to solve them. It is known for the breadth of the mathematics it uses and its cross-disciplinary vigor. Its literature, which can befoundinSection93ofMathematicalReviews,wasatonetimedominatedby the theory of linear control systems, which mathematically are described by linear di?erential equations forced by additive control inputs. That theory led to well-regarded numerical and symbolic computational packages for control analysis and design. Nonlinear control problems are also important; in these either the - derlying dynamical system is nonlinear or the controls are applied in a n- additiveway.Thelastfourdecadeshaveseenthedevelopmentoftheoretical work on nonlinear control problems based on di?erential manifold theory, nonlinear analysis, and several other mathematical disciplines. Many of the problems that had been solved in linear control theory, plus others that are new and distinctly nonlinear, have been addressed; some resulting general de?nitions and theorems are adapted in this book to the bilinear case.

Book Learning Systems and Intelligent Robots

Download or read book Learning Systems and Intelligent Robots written by K. Fu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the S~cond U. S. -Japan Seminar on Learning Control and Intelligent Control. The seminar, held at Gainesville, Florida, from October 22 to 26, 1973, was sponsored by the U. S. -Japan Cooperative Science Program, jointly supported by the National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The full texts of the twenty-one presented papers are included. The papers cover a variety of topics related to learning control and intelligent control, ranging from pattern recognition to system identification, from learning control to intelligent robots. During the past decade, there has been a considerable increase of interest in problems of machine learning, systems which exhibit learning behavior. In designing a system, if the a priori infor mation required is unknown or incompletely known, one approach is to design a system which is capable of learning the unknown infor mation during its operation. The learned information will then be used to improve the system's performance. This approach has been used in the design of pattern recognition systems, automatic control systems and system identification algorithms. If we naturally extend our goal to the design of systems which will behave more and more intelligently, learning systems research is only a preliminary step towards a general concept of integrated intelligent systems. One example of this class of systems is the intelligent robot, which integrates pattern recognition. learning and problem-solving into one intelligent system.

Book Refinements of the Nash Equilibrium Concept

Download or read book Refinements of the Nash Equilibrium Concept written by E. van Damme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, noncooperative games are studied. Since in a noncooperative game binding agreements are not possible, the solution of such a game has to be self enforcing, i. e. a Nash equilibrium (NASH [1950,1951J). In general, however, a game may possess many equilibria and so the problem arises which one of these should be chosen as the solution. It was first pointed out explicitly in SELTEN [1965J that I not all Nash equilibria of an extensive form game are qualified to be selected as the solution, since an equilibrium may prescribe irrational behavior at unreached parts of the game tree. Moreover, also for normal form games not all Nash equilibria are eligible, since an equilibrium need not be robust with respect to slight perturba tions in the data of the game. These observations lead to the conclusion that the Nash equilibrium concept has to be refined in order to obtain sensible solutions for every game. In the monograph, various refinements of the Nash equilibrium concept are studied. Some of these have been proposed in the literature, but others are presented here for the first time. The objective is to study the relations between these refine ments;to derive characterizations and to discuss the underlying assumptions. The greater part of the monograph (the chapters 2-5) is devoted to the study of normal form games. Extensive form games are considered in chapter 6.

Book Semi Infinite Programming and Applications

Download or read book Semi Infinite Programming and Applications written by A.V. Fiacco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-infinite programming is a natural extension of linear pro gramming that allows finitely many variables to appear in infinitely many constraints. As the papers in this collection will reconfirm, the theoretical and practical manifestations and applications of this prob lem formulation are abundant and significant. This volume presents 20 carefully selected papers that were pre sented at the International Symposium on Semi-Infinite Programming and Applications, The University of Texas at Austin, September 8-10, 1981. A total of 70 papers were presented by distinguished participants from 15 countries. This was only the second international meeting on this topic, the first taking place in Bad Honnef,Federal Republic of Germany in 1978. A proceedings of that conference was organized and edited by Rainer Hettich of the University of Trier and published by Springer Verlag in 1979. The papers in this volume could have been published in any of several refereed journals. It is also probable that the authors of these papers would normally not have met at the same professional society meeting. Having these papers appear under one cover is thus something of a new phenomenon and provides an indication of both the unification and cross-fertilization opportunities that have emerged in this field. These papers were solicited only through the collective efforts of an International Program Committee organized according to the fol lowing research areas.

Book Bayesian Full Information Analysis of Simultaneous Equation Models Using Integration by Monte Carlo

Download or read book Bayesian Full Information Analysis of Simultaneous Equation Models Using Integration by Monte Carlo written by L. Bauwens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their review of the "Bayesian analysis of simultaneous equation systems", Dr~ze and Richard (1983) - hereafter DR - express the following viewpoint about the present state of development of the Bayesian full information analysis of such sys tems i) the method allows "a flexible specification of the prior density, including well defined noninformative prior measures"; ii) it yields "exact finite sample posterior and predictive densities". However, they call for further developments so that these densities can be eval uated through 'numerical methods, using an integrated software packa~e. To that end, they recommend the use of a Monte Carlo technique, since van Dijk and Kloek (1980) have demonstrated that "the integrations can be done and how they are done". In this monograph, we explain how we contribute to achieve the developments suggested by Dr~ze and Richard. A basic idea is to use known properties of the porterior density of the param eters of the structural form to design the importance functions, i. e. approximations of the posterior density, that are needed for organizing the integrations.

Book Selected Topics in Operations Research and Mathematical Economics

Download or read book Selected Topics in Operations Research and Mathematical Economics written by G. Hammer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let eRN be the usual vector-space of real N-uples with the usual inner product denoted by (. ,. ). In this paper P is a nonempty compact polyhedral set of mN, f is a real-valued function defined on (RN continuously differentiable and fP is the line- ly constrained minimization problem stated as : min (f(x) I x € P) • For computing stationary points of problemtj) we propose a method which attempts to operate within the linear-simplex method structure. This method then appears as a same type of method as the convex-simplex method of Zangwill [6]. It is however, different and has the advantage of being less technical with regards to the Zangwill method. It has also a simple geometrical interpretation which makes it more under standable and more open to other improvements. Also in the case where f is convex an implementable line-search is proposed which is not the case in the Zangwill method. Moreover, if f(x) = (c,x) this method will coincide with the simplex method (this is also true in the case of the convex simplex method) i if f(x) = I Ixl 12 it will be almost the same as the algorithm given by Bazaraa, Goode, Rardin [2].

Book Convexity and Duality in Optimization

Download or read book Convexity and Duality in Optimization written by Jacob Ponstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis and optimization of convex functions have re ceived a great deal of attention during the last two decades. If we had to choose two key-words from these developments, we would retain the concept of ~ubdi66~e~ and the duality theo~y. As it usual in the development of mathematical theories, people had since tried to extend the known defi nitions and properties to new classes of functions, including the convex ones. For what concerns the generalization of the notion of subdifferential, tremendous achievements have been carried out in the past decade and any rna·· thematician who is faced with a nondifferentiable nonconvex function has now a panoply of generalized subdifferentials or derivatives at his disposal. A lot remains to be done in this area, especially concerning vecto~-valued functions ; however we think the golden age for these researches is behind us. Duality theory has also fascinated many mathematicians since the underlying mathematical framework has been laid down in the context of Convex Analysis. The various duality schemes which have emerged in the re cent years, despite of their mathematical elegance, have not always proved as powerful as expected.

Book Invariance Principles and the Structure of Technology

Download or read book Invariance Principles and the Structure of Technology written by R. Sato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Lie groups has proven to be a most powerful analytical tool in many areas of modern scientific endeavors. It was only a few years ago that economists discovered the usefulness of this approach in their study of the frontiers of modern economic theory. These frontiers include the areas of technical change and productivity, technology and preference, economic conservation laws, comparative statics and integrability conditions, index number problems, and the general theory of ~ observable market behavior (Sato [1980, 1981], Nono [1971], Sato and N~no [1983], Russell [1983]). 1 In Nono [1971] and Sa to [1981, Chapter 4] the concept of "G-neutral" (group neutral) technical change was first introduced as a natural extension of the well-known concepts of Hicks, Harrod, Solow and Sato-Beckmann-Rose neutrality. The present monograph contains a further extension of the G-neutral technical change to the case of non-constant-returns-to-scale technology and to the case of multiple factor inputs. The methodology of total productivity estimation by means of Lie group transformations is also developed in this monograph. We would like to express our sincere thanks to many individuals notably to Professor M. J. Beckmann, Professor F. Mimura, Professor G. Suzawa, T. Mitchell, K. Mino and P. Calem, for their numerous contributions at various stages of this work. We are also grateful to Marion Wathey for her usual superb typing of this difficult manuscript. Providence, R. I. , U. S. A.

Book Optimization with Disjunctive Constraints

Download or read book Optimization with Disjunctive Constraints written by H.D. Sherali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disjunctive cut principle of Balas and Jeroslow, and the related polyhedral annexation principle of Glover, provide new insights into cutting plane theory. This has resulted in its ability to not only subsume many known valid cuts but also improve upon them. Originally a set of notes were written for the purpose of putting together in a common terminology and framework significant results of Glover and others using a geometric approach, referred to in the literature as convexity cuts, and the algebraic approach of Balas and Jeroslow known as Disjunctive cuts. As it turned out subsequently the polyhedral annexation approach of Glover is also closely connected with the basic disjunctive principle of Balas and Jeroslow. In this monograph we have included these results and have also added several published results which seem to be of strong interest to researchers in the area of developing strong cuts for disjunctive programs. In particular, several results due to Balas [4,5,6,7], Glover [18,19] and Jeroslow [23,25,26] have been used in this monograph. The appropriate theorems are given without proof. The notes also include several results yet to be published [32,34,35] obtained under a research contract with the National Science Foundation to investigate solution methods for disjunctive programs. The monograph is self-contained and complete in the sense that it attempts to pool together existing results which the authors viewed as important to future research on optimization using the disjunctive cut approach.
