Book Dynamics of the Mixed Economy

Download or read book Dynamics of the Mixed Economy written by Sanford Ikeda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics of the Mixed Economy applies the insights of modern Austrian political economy to examine economic policy in mixed economies. It compares and contrasts standard approaches to the growth of the state (including public choice) with that of modern Austrian political economy; examines in detail the nature and operation of the interventionist process in the context of nationalization, regulation and the welfare state; analyzes conditions that produce instability under laissez-faire capitalism; argues that the interventionist process is a 'spontaneous order'; and offers several 'pattern predictions' regarding the character and behaviour of really existing economies.

Book Theories of Modern Capitalism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Theories of Modern Capitalism Routledge Revivals written by Tom Bottomore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, Theories of Modern Capitalism provides a succinct study of Marxist and non-Marxist theories of Capitalism, its recent development, and the prospects of a transition to socialism. The study begins with a critical examination and comparison of four major theories of capitalism, in the works of Marx, Weber, Schumpeter and Hayek. This is followed by an analysis of the most recent phase of capitalism which has been conceptualised by Marxists thinkers in various ways as 'organised capitalism'', 'state monopoly', or 'late capitalism'. Finally, Bottomore considers the question of a 'transition to socialism' in the diverse interpretations which have been offered by Marxists on one side, and by Weber, Schumpeter and Hayek on the other. Theories of Modern Capitalism will be valuable in a wide range of courses in social and political theory, and will also have an appeal to a broader readership concerned with issues of social and economic policy.

Book Growth Without Inequality

Download or read book Growth Without Inequality written by Henry K. H. Woo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years on after the 2007–8 financial crisis, most developed nations still find themselves in a state of weak recovery, high debt pile-up and distributive disparity. The intriguing question that we face is whether the golden days of modern capitalism are over, or if capitalism is just undergoing another period of adjustment characteristic of its past. What is disheartening is that the twin economic goals of sustainable growth and equality, which the world has now come to recognise as of paramount importance but mutually conflicting, remain, more now than ever, illusive and unattainable. Growth Without Inequality attempts to address this issue and to provide a pragmatic solution especially for nations in the current policy gridlock. By offering a unified framework of factors that drive growth, it shows how growth also gives rise to an array of "anomalous market forms" (defined by different degrees of value and risk visibility) that subvert distributive equity between labour and capital. It debunks both the pure free market solution and the mixed economy approach on the ground that they fail to arrest the growth propelling yet subversive power inherent in the "corporate forms" under the present capitalistic regime. Having shown that effective reform can hardly take place within the system itself, this book proposes to build a separate sector (Economy II) and partition it from the existing system (Economy I). The solution is easy to implement and quick to take effect. By one single stroke, this "Non-Marxist" solution can happily achieve the ideals of both "competitive capitalism" and "egalitarian socialism".

Book The Diversity of Modern Capitalism

Download or read book The Diversity of Modern Capitalism written by Bruno Amable and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers why institutional forms of modern capitalist economies differ internationally, and proposes a typology of capitalism based on the theory of institutional complementarity. Different economic models are not simply characterized by different institutional forms, but also by particular patterns of interaction between complementary institutions which are the core characteristics of these models. Institutions are not just simply devices which would be chosen by 'social engineers' in order to perform a function as efficiently as possible; they are the outcome of a political economy process. Therefore, institutional change should be envisaged not as a move towards a hypothetical 'one best way', but as a result of socio-political compromises. Based on a theory of institutions and comparative capitalism, the book proposes an analysis of the diversity of modern economies - from America to Korea - and identifies five different models: the market-based Anglo-Saxon model; Asian capitalism; the Continental European model; the social democratic economies; and the Mediterranean model. Each of these types of capitalism is characterized by specific institutional complementarities. The question of the stability of the Continental European model of capitalism has been open since the beginning of the 1990s: inferior macroeconomic performance compared to Anglo-Saxon economies, alleged unsustainability of its welfare systems, too rigid markets, etc. The book examines the institutional transformations that have taken place within Continental European economies and analyses the political project behind the attempts at transforming the Continental model. It argues that Continental European economies will most likely stay very different from the market-based economies, and caat political strategies promoting institutional change aiming at convergence with the Anglo-Saxon model are bound to meet considerable opposition.

Book New Theory and Practice of Capitalism

Download or read book New Theory and Practice of Capitalism written by John Bosco Nkumunue and published by Partridge Singapore. This book was released on 2014 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people today are poor, and unemployment continues to run rampant. Can capitalism truly lift us up? Author John Bosco Nkumunue, an economist, believes it can-as long as the world gets behind a new form and concept of capitalism. Nkumunue is on a mission to fight poverty, redistribute wealth, and create better living conditions for vast numbers of people. In this study, he outlines how this new form of capitalism would affect the rich, the middle-class, and the poor. He explores critical issues, such as - the key role that demand plays in the economy; - the unforeseen ways in which liquidity affects us; - ways in which businesses can bolster markets through investment; and - ways for consumers can wield power in the marketplace. A progressive form of capitalism could alleviate the world's suffering and narrow the wealth gap by stimulating investment and therefore job growth. It has the potential to change the economic classes of the world, decrease poverty, and end the global economic crisis.

Book excerpt: A world of new and rapidly developing technology. A world of innovations in finance, not to mention disastrous bubbles. A world in which saying or believing in the wrong thing can lose you your livelihood or even your life. A world in which beggars line the streets and employers cannot find enough workers. Sound familiar? This is the world which gave birth to modern capitalism. Sombart takes us on a journey through the epoch of early capitalism, exploring the factors that influenced its development, from the development of a demand for luxury goods by French courtesans, to the demand for weapons and uniforms for the new standing armies, to the use of colonisation for creating the demand for and the supply of goods, to the creation of the 'worker' as something different from the craftsman and the entrepreneur as an entirely new phenomenon.

Book Economics and Utopia

Download or read book Economics and Utopia written by Geoffrey M Hodgson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the fall of the Berlin Wall we have been told that no alternative to Western capitalism is possible or desirable. This book challenges this view with two arguments. First, the above premise ignores the enormous variety within capitalism itself. Second, there are enormous forces of transformation within contemporary capitalisms, associated with moves towards a more knowledge-intensive economy. These forces challenge the traditional bases of contract and employment, and could lead to a quite different socio-economic system. Without proposing a static blueprint, this book explores this possible scenario.

This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, institutional and evolutionary economics emerged as one of the most creative and successful approaches in the modern social sciences. This timely reader gathers together seminal contributions from leading international authors in the field of institutional and evolutionary economics including Eileen Appelbaum, Benjamin Coriat, Giovanni Dosi, Sheila C. Dow, Bengt-Åke Lundvall, Uskali Mäki, Bart Nooteboom and Marc R. Tool. The emphasis is on key concepts such as learning, trust, power, pricing and markets, with some essays devoted to methodology and others to the comparison of different forms of capitalism. An extensive introduction places the contributions in the context of the historical and theoretical background of recent developments in economics and the social sciences. Essential reading for lecturers, researchers, graduates and advanced undergraduates in economics, business studies and sociology, this diverse yet complementary collection of essays will also find a broad readership amongst those wanting to understand the manifest changes apparent within modern socio-economic systems.
