Book A Study of Impact and Penetration of the Gator Mine in Earth Materials

Download or read book A Study of Impact and Penetration of the Gator Mine in Earth Materials written by Jerry R. Lundien and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study of the penetration characteristics of an air-delivered, antitank/antivehicle and antipersonnel mine (Gator mine system) as related to variations in mine impact velocity and attitude and changes in soil strength conditions and vegetation. A theoretical study, a field study, and a mapping study were pursued to estimate worldwide mine penetration performance. The theoretical results are presented in terms of relations of impact velocity (specific velocity ranges) versus maximum depth of penetration and maximum deceleration for various terrain materials. The field study was conducted using an air gun, and the results are presented in terms of relations of impact velocity, depth of penetration, impact angle, impact attitude, and terrain material strength characteristics. In the mapping study the results of the theoretical and field studies were used to estimate the probability of successful emplacement (i. e., in a position suitable for activation) of the mines in any region of the world. The results obtained from the theoretical study show that, for the normal range of impact velocity, penetration is excessive in clay and sandy clay soils, intermediate in sands, and acceptable in frozen ground and rock. The results obtained from the field study showed that penetration was excessive in lean and fat clay soils when the mine impact angle was 90 degrees. Penetration performance becomes more satisfactory as the impact angle decreases. The results of the mapping study show that a large portion of the world has surface soils too soft to allow acceptable emplacement when the impact angle is 90 degrees. Reducing this angle to 45 degrees will allow acceptable emplacement in many regions.

Book Survey of Relative Hardness of Selected Impact Areas Yuma Proving Ground Arizona

Download or read book Survey of Relative Hardness of Selected Impact Areas Yuma Proving Ground Arizona written by Adam A. Rula and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yuma Proving Ground was visited to conduct a survey of the relative hardness of selected impact areas to establish the most suitable sites for a survivability test as part of DT II testing of 155mm XM718/741 Remote Anti-Armor Mine System (RAAMS). Soil/terrain data were collected at Z, R, Cain, and Adam Fields located along the north side of Poleline Road. Z and R Fields were located on nearly level, moderately dissected gravelly piedmont which had recently been graded and compacted to achieve a high strength within the compacted layer. Cain Field is located on a wash. The area is undulating and bare. Adam Field is located on predominantly gravelly undissected piedmont with some wash areas. The area is undulating and the brush vegetation was removed. The surface materials at the four impact areas visited are predominantly coarse-grained soils with some areas having large amounts of gravel and caliche. The soil was slightly moist and firm when sampled. The cone index ranged from 300 to 500 in the 0- to 6-in. layer, and the dynamic cone penetrometer blows per foot for the surface 12 in. ranged from 17 to 34. A comparison of calculated peak rigid body deceleration-impact velocity relation for selected surface materials revealed that the magnitude of the rigid body g forces that the RAAM can experience upon impact with various earth materials varies considerably.

Book Notes on Projectile Impact Analyses

Download or read book Notes on Projectile Impact Analyses written by Hao Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comprehensive experimental, numerical, and theoretical research on projectile impact analysis, such as the rigid projectile penetration/perforation of concrete and metallic targets, and shaped-charge-formed projectile and jet penetrations. Concrete and metal materials are widely used in protective structures in both civil engineering and armored vehicles, such as military fortifications, underground shelters, infantry fighting vehicles, and tanks, which are designed to withstand intentional or accidental impact loadings caused by projectiles and fragments, and the responses of these targets under projectile impact have been a topic of discussion for several decades. Written for researchers and engineers working in the fields of protective structures and high-speed penetration mechanics, the book is also a valuable reference for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in defense engineering, terminal ballistics and other related fields.

Book Numerical Analysis of Projectile Impact and Deep Penetration Into Earth Media

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of Projectile Impact and Deep Penetration Into Earth Media written by Mark H. Wagner and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was carried out to examine the utility, and some of the limitations, of using a finite-difference Lagrangian code to analyze relatively deep penetrations of projectiles into earth media. Numerical solutions were obtained for the normal impact of an 8-in. dia, 602-lb steel ogival projectile at 2000 fps into a soil/shale layered target. Two types of analyses were performed. In the first, the soil response, penetration dynamics, and projectile response were analyzed as one problem. The projectile was treated as an elastic-plastic, or deformable body, in order to determine the internal stress response. In the second analysis, the projectile was treated as a rigid body, and its penetration to a depth of 22 ft was calculated.
