Book QSO Absorption Lines

  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book QSO Absorption Lines written by Georges Meylan and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-09-18 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial question of whether the majority of the narrow absorption lines observed in QSO spectra represent cosmological intervening systems or ejecta from the QSO themselves is settled. QSO absorption line spectroscopy, initially a mere technique, has matured into an essential extragalactic research tool for understanding the content of the Universe at redshifts between 0 and 4, and beyond. The only previous important meeting devoted to "QSO Absorption Lines" was held in May 1987 at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. Since that time, nearly a decade ago, research has been ex tremely active in this now well-established field of astrophysics. Theoretical stud ies and simulations have taken advantage of the constant progress in computer technology, and during these last few years, the observational results have bene fited largely from the new facillities offered by the Hubble Space Telescope in the UV wavelength range and the Keck Telescope for high-resolution spectroscopy.

Book The Environment and Evolution of Galaxies

Download or read book The Environment and Evolution of Galaxies written by J.M. Shull and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1992, over 300 astronomers attended the Third Tetons Summer School on the subject of `The Environment and Evolution of Galaxies'. This book presents 28 papers based on invited review talks and a panel discussion on `The Nature of High Redshift Objects'. The major themes include: the Interstellar and Intergalactic Medium, Galaxy Formation and Evolution, Cooling Flows, Quasars and Radiation Backgrounds, and Interactions between Galaxies/AGNs and their Environment. Recent advances with the ROSAT, COBE and Hubble Space Telescope are discussed, together with current theoretical developments. The tutorial nature of the papers make this book a valuable supplement for professional astonomers, graduate students, and senior undergraduates. As with previous Tetons conferences, this book provides both the current state of observational and theoretical research and material complementary to courses in extragalactic and interstellar astrophysics.

Book QSO Absorption Lines

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Chris Blades
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1988-08-18
  • ISBN : 9780521345613
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book QSO Absorption Lines written by J. Chris Blades and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-08-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second title in the series published for the Space Telescope Science Institute researches the current models of quasar absorption and the systems of absorption lines in the spectra of quasars. Experts in this field discuss the nature of the absorbing process in the vicinity of quasars, the "Lyman-alpha forest", metal-line systems, and quasars as probes of high redshift galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope will be a valuable tool for learning more about the physics and astronomy of quasars.

Book Quasar Continuum Fitting and Silicon Absorption on the Low Redshift Intergalactic Medium

Download or read book Quasar Continuum Fitting and Silicon Absorption on the Low Redshift Intergalactic Medium written by Adam Andrew Miller and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results on the evolution of Ly[alpha] absorption at low redshift, and the first systematic search for Si II absorption systems in the low redshift IGM. Our sample consists of 832 Ly[alpha] absorbers from 328 spectra of 204 QSOs taken from the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We develop a new, reproducible method of quasar continuum fitting, designed to quickly identify absorption lines and measure the relative line strength (a proxy for equivalent width). Our method, which fails to identify the weakest lines, does manage to detect the strong features in a given spectrum and provides enough information to identify metal absorption line systems. We confirm the results of previous studies of Ly[alpha] evolution at low redshift and find the number density of absorbers can be described by a power law in (l+z) that is much flatter than that found for Lya evolution at high redshift. Specifically, we measure a power law index of [gamma] = 0.57 ± 0.16 for lines with a rest relative line strength greater than 0.10 [Angstroms]. We also identify the presence of 14 Si II systems at z [approx] 1. The number of Si ii 1193 and 1260 [Angstroms] systems per unit redshift path length at a mean redshift of z = 0.9 is N(z)= 1.6 ± 0.6. This density is similar to that found for C Ii, Mg ii, and O vi absorbers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the leading authorities in the field, this is one of the first book's to describe one of today's most important problems in cosmology - the formation of galaxies. The book tackles this great puzzle by discusses the beginnings of the process from cosmological observations and calculations, considers the broad features of galaxies that we need to explain and what we know of their later history. The author compares the competing theories for galaxy formation and considers the progress expected from new generations of powerful telescopes both on earth and in space. An intriguing text on one of today's greatest and most profound puzzles.
