Book Theoretical Modeling of Crevice and Pitting Corrosion Processes in Relation to Corrosion of Radioactive Waste Containers

Download or read book Theoretical Modeling of Crevice and Pitting Corrosion Processes in Relation to Corrosion of Radioactive Waste Containers written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical and numerical model for evaluation of crevice and pitting corrosion in radioactive waste containers is presented. The model considers mass transport, mass transfer at the metal/solution interface, and chemical speciation in the corrosion cavity. The model is compared against experimental data obtained in artificial crevices. Excellent agreement is found between modeled and experimental values. The importance of full consideration of complex ion formation in the aqueous solution is emphasized and illustrated. 10 refs., 5 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All significant studies agree that aqueous corrosion continues to cost nations dearly in almost every area of technological endeavour. Over the past ten years, microcomputers have facilitated an explosion in the power of modelling as a technique in science and engineering. In corrosion they have enabled better understanding of polarization curves, they have transformed the scope of electrochemical impedance measurements and they have placed a large range of electrochemistry at the fingertips of the corrosion scientist. This book focuses on the models, rather than the computing, which have been made possible during the past decade. Aimed at all those with an interest in corrosion and its control, the book draws together the range of new modelling strands, suggests new avenues of approach and generates further momentum for improvements to corrosion management, whether by increased understanding of atomistic processes or by control of large plant.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Localized corrosion is the most damaging and prevalent type of corrosion that can affect metallic containers used in nuclear waste repository sites. Mechanisms of pitting and crevice corrosion, and the techniques used in elucidating these mechanisms, are discussed in this review, which includes a literature survey.

Book Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management XXII Volume 556

Download or read book Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management XXII Volume 556 written by David J. Wronkiewicz and published by . This book was released on 1999-11-24 with total page 1370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safe and effective management of nuclear waste provides a broad range of challenges for materials science. Waste processing, waste form and engineered barrier properties, interactions between engineered and geological systems, radiation effects, chemistry and transport of waste species, and long-term predictions of repository performance are just some of the scientific problems facing modern society. This book, the 22nd in a very successful series from MRS, offers an international and inter-disciplinary perspective on the issues, and features developments in both fundamental and applied areas. Topics include: development and characterization of ceramic waste forms; ceramic waste form corrosion; glass waste form processing; glass formulation, properties and structure; glass waste form corrosion; spent nuclear fuel; performance assessment; repository backfill; flow and transport; natural analogues; container corrosion; metal waste form corrosion; radionuclide speciation and solubility; radionuclide sorption; microbial effects; radiation effects; cement waste forms and waste treatment.
