Book Comparative Studies in Romanian Syntax

Download or read book Comparative Studies in Romanian Syntax written by Virginia Motapanyane and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 58 of the North Holland Linguistic Series, edited by Virginia Motapanyane, provides an up-to-date overview of studies in Romanian syntax. Bringing together linguists working within the field of generative grammar, the volume's comparative approach demonstrates the relevance of Romanian data to grammatical theory. The editor's introductory chapter provides a valuable summary of developments in Romanian syntax and is the ideal preparation for the studies contained in this volume, both for Romance specialists and for those less familiar with the topic.

Book Infinitives at the Syntax Semantics Interface

Download or read book Infinitives at the Syntax Semantics Interface written by Lukasz Jedrzejowski and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major aim of this volume is to investigate infinitival structures from a diachronic point of view and, simultaneously, to embed the diachronic findings into the ongoing theoretical discussion on non-finite clauses in general. All contributions subscribe to a dynamic approach to infinitival clauses by investigating their origin, development and loss in miscellaneous patterns and across different languages.

Book Diachronic Variation in Romanian

Download or read book Diachronic Variation in Romanian written by Gabriela Pană Dindelegan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first work published in English dealing with the historical grammar of Romanian from a modern theoretical perspective. It consists of a selection of papers focusing on the historical grammar of Romanian, bringing together diverse theoretical approaches in order to address a number of key morphological and syntactic issues in the history of the morphosyntactic development of Romanian. The majority of papers in this volume deal with topics in Romanian historical syntax, drawing on modern research methods and current linguistic theory, with a clear preference for parametric syntax. The most significant areas of grammar, namely the nominal domain and the verbal domain, are well represented in this volume.

Book The Syntax Prosody Interface

Download or read book The Syntax Prosody Interface written by Giuliano Bocci and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of the interplay between information structure, word order alternations, and prosody in Italian. Left/right dislocations, focus fronting, and other reordering phenomena are analyzed, taking into account their morphosyntactic and prosodic properties. It is argued that a restricted set of discourse-related properties are inserted in the numeration as formal features. These discourse-related features drive the syntactic derivation and the formation of the prosodic representation in compliance with the T-model of grammar. Based on the cartographic approach, this study proposes a model of the syntax–prosody interface in which the phonological computation of prosody is fed by syntactically encoded properties of information structure. However, this computation is also governed by structural requirements intrinsic to the phonological domain, and thus, a bijective relation between information structure and prosodic representation is not guaranteed. The monograph will be of interest to any linguist concerned with syntax, information structure, and prosody.

Book Theorical Implications of Complementation in Romanian

Book Advances in Roumanian Linguistics

Download or read book Advances in Roumanian Linguistics written by Guglielmo Cinque and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to collect and make available to the public recent studies on Roumanian in the framework of Generative Grammar. All the studies can be considered as highly advanced from both the empirical and the theoretical point of view. In fact, they deal with many of the phenomena that differentiate this language from other well-studied ones, adopting and further improving recent developments in linguistic theory. In this respect the book contributes both to Roumanian studies and to theoretical linguistics. These studies cover major areas of general syntactic investigation: the syntax of nominal expressions (Giusti on determiners, Grosu on free relative clauses), clausal structure (Motapanyane), clitic placement (Dobrovie-Sorin), and morpho-semantics (Farka? and Zec). In so doing, they address the problems of the definition and refinement of the theory of functional projections, contributing new ideas and evidence for their formulation.

Book Comparative Syntax and Language Acquisition

Download or read book Comparative Syntax and Language Acquisition written by Luigi Rizzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, the author addresses the central issues in syntax theory, comparative syntax and the theoretically conscious study of language acquisition. Key topics are explored, including the properties of null elements and the theory of parameters. Some of the essays presented here have been highly influential in their field, while others are published for the first time.

Book Balkan Syntax and Semantics

Download or read book Balkan Syntax and Semantics written by Olga Mišeska Tomi? and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with some syntactic and semantic aspects of the shared Balkan Sprachbund properties. In a comprehensive introductory chapter, Tomic offers an overview of the Balkan Sprachbund properties. Sobolev, displaying the areal distribution of 65 properties, argues for dialect cartography. Friedman, on the example of the evidentials, argues for typologically informed areal explanation of the Balkan properties. The other contributions analyze specific phenomena: polidefinite DPs in Greek and Aromanian (Campos and Stavrou), Balkan constructions in which datives combine with impersonal clitics or non-active morphology (Rivero), Balkan optatives (Ammann and Auwera), imperative force in the Balkan languages (Isac and Jakab), clitic placement in Greek imperatives (Boškovic), focused constituents in Romanian and Bulgarian (Hill), synthetic and analytic tenses in Romanian (D'Hulst, Coene and Avram), "purpose-like" modification in a number of Balkan languages (Bužarovska), Balkan modal existential “wh”-constructions (Grosu), child and adult strategies in interpreting empty subjects in Serbian/Croatian (Stojanovic and Marelj), conditional sentences in Judeo-Spanish (Montoliu and Auwera).

Book Parameters and Functional Heads Essays in Comparative Syntax

Download or read book Parameters and Functional Heads Essays in Comparative Syntax written by Perugia Adriana Belletti Associate Professor of Linguistics Universita per Stanieri and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996-03-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume, most previously unpublished, address a number of closely interconnected issues raised by the comparative syntax of functional heads within the Principles-and-Parameters approach. The general theory of head movement, the properties of derived structures created by incorporation, and the parameterization involved are the main theoretical foci. One major empirical area which is addressed concerns head movement in configurations involving certain kinds of operator-like elements, for example, the different manifestations of Verb Second phenomena in Wh and other constructions and the syntax of negative heads and specifiers. In addition, properties of functional heads and head movement in nominal and clausal structures and the causative construction are investigated.

Book Case Absorption and WH Agreement

Download or read book Case Absorption and WH Agreement written by A. Watanabe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extensively revised version of the core part of my 1993 MIT doctoral dissertation, which seeks to provide a Minimalist theory of Case absorption and support it through empirical investigation. The central idea pursued is that impoverishment of phrase structure is responsible for Case absorption and that the right theory of Case checking should derive this property. Although the basic line of research on Case absorption and wh-agreement remains the same, this book incorporates a lot of new results. A principied theory of Case checking and Case absorption has been worked out in Chapter 1. Treatment of participial constructions in Chapter 3 and wh agreement in Chapter 4 is far more systematic and comprehensive. Chapter 2 is also streamlined, together with refinements of the analysis of Romanian. The product, I hope, is a more convincing def ense of the strength of the Mi ni mal ist approach. I would like to thank my thesis committee members Ken Haie, Noam Chomsky, and Howard Lasnik, under whose guidance this project started.

Book Vocatives

Download or read book Vocatives written by Virginia Hill and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocatives proposes a formal syntactic approach to vocatives. The analysis focuses on the internal structure of vocatives phrases and on the mechanism through which a vocative phrase connects with the clause. Vocatives are nouns that encode conversational pragmatic features at their left periphery. Any vocative phrase with this structure becomes the indirect object of a Speech Act head mapped at the left periphery of clauses. This analysis has implications for the debate on whether pragmatic features are mapped into syntax, and, subsequently, on how a grammar of direct address may look like. Since particles of direct address, imperatives and exclamations fall under the same umbrella of speech acts, they all need re-assessment from the same perspective. "This book is a tour de force: Virginia Hill brings the vocative a category which had so far remained marginal and ill understood into main stream syntactic research by tying it in with recent progress in the study of the syntactization of pragmatic functions. What used to be a fringe phenomenon will now be part of the core theory." Liliane Haegeman, Ghent University "Virginia Hill has redrawn the syntax-pragmatics interface by nudging syntax into domains that are traditionally considered to be purely pragmatic in nature. She has done this with sophisticated analysis and a breathtaking array of cross-linguistic data." Shigery Miyagawa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology “Vocatives are a fundamental yet strangely neglected aspect of the grammar of many languages. General readers intrigued and perhaps puzzled by the nature of vocatives and how they are expressed cross-linguistically will find this a very helpful and enlightening book." Martin Maiden, University of Oxford"

Book The Diachrony of Differential Object Marking in Romanian

Download or read book The Diachrony of Differential Object Marking in Romanian written by Virginia Hill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive investigation of the origins, development, and stabilization of differential object marking (DOM) in Romanian. DOM, a means by which a grammar distinguishes between objects based on semantic features such as animacy or definiteness, has been a fruitful area of research in syntax, historical linguistics, and typology. In this volume, Virginia Hill and Alexandru Mardale demonstrate that Romanian DOM reflects a typological mix of Balkan and Romance patterns, and is in fact composed of three distinct mechanisms. Their analysis of these mechanisms reveals that DOM triggers in Romanian are located in the nominal domain, in contrast to languages such as Spanish, where they are located in the verbal domain. The cross-linguistic perspective adopted in the volume sheds light on existing typologies of DOM, particularly in relation to the variation observed in the merging location of the DOM particle and of the doubling pronominal clitic.

Book The Biolinguistic Enterprise

Download or read book The Biolinguistic Enterprise written by Anna Maria Di Sciullo and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by leading scholars, represents some of the main work in progress in biolinguistics. It offers fresh perspectives on language evolution and variation, new developments in theoretical linguistics, and insights on the relations between variation in language and variation in biology. The authors address the Darwinian questions on the origin and evolution of language from a minimalist perspective, and provide elegant solutions to the evolutionary gap between human language and communication in all other organisms. They consider language variation in the context of current biological approaches to species diversity - the 'evo-devo revolution' - which bring to light deep homologies between organisms. In dispensing with the classical notion of syntactic parameters, the authors argue that language variation, like biodiversity, is the result of experience and thus not a part of the language faculty in the narrow sense. They also examine the nature of this core language faculty, the primary categories with which it is concerned, the operations it performs, the syntactic constraints it poses on semantic interpretation and the role of phases in bridging the gap between brain and syntax. Written in language accessible to a wide audience, The Biolinguistic Enterprise will appeal to scholars and students of linguistics, cognitive science, biology, and natural language processing.

Book Adverbs and Functional Heads

Download or read book Adverbs and Functional Heads written by Guglielmo Cinque and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents evidence locating adverb phrases in the specifiers of distinct functional projections within a theory of the clause. In this theory, both adverbs and heads, which encode the functional notions of the clause, are ordered in a rigid sequence. The author's proposal suggests that the structure of natural language sentences is much richer than previously assumed.
