Book Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Novel High Gain Seeded Free Electron Laser Schemes

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Novel High Gain Seeded Free Electron Laser Schemes written by Chao Feng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the study of novel high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) operation schemes with external seed lasers. The technique of manipulating the phase space of the electron beam, which is widely used in novel seeded FEL schemes, is systematically studied. Several novel FEL schemes are proposed for the generation of intense coherent FEL pulses with short wavelength, sub-femtosecond pulse length or multiple carrier frequency properties, which meet the needs of FEL users. Results of experiments are described for the recently proposed FEL schemes such as echo-enabled harmonic generation and cascaded high-gain harmonic generation. New photon/electron beam diagnostic methods are also developed for these experiments and future high-gain FEL facilities.

Book Theoretical Study of Novel Concepts for Compact High gain Free Electron Lasers

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the free-electron laser (FEL) has demonstrated its value as a tunable source of bright, coherent radiation with photon energies up to the X-ray region. For such short radiation wavelengths, three-dimensional (3D) effects (due to diffraction, emittance and focusing) become significant and must be taken into consideration. In this work, we present a systematic, fully 3D theoretical formalism applicable to a range of concepts for compact, high-gain FELs. These include novel schemes involving the use of transverse gradient (TGU) or laser undulators. Our approach utilizes either a standard eigenmode analysis for constant-parameter systems or a non-eigenmode expansion technique in terms of orthogonal transverse modes for cases where the parameters of the electron beam and/or the undulator vary along the longitudinal direction. The results we obtain fully characterize the system (electron beam and radiation) in the linear regime of the interaction and are shown to be in excellent agreement with simulation. Moreover, the formalism developed here can be used in comprehensive, theory-based optimization studies, with significant applications in FEL design.

Book Principles of Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Principles of Free Electron Lasers written by H. P. Freund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time that we decided to begin work on this book, several other volumes on the free-electron laser had either been published or were in press. The earliest work of which we were aware was published in 1985 by Dr T. C. Marshall of Columbia University [1]. This book dealt with the full range of research on free-electron lasers, including an overview of the extant experiments. However, the field has matured a great deal since that time and, in our judgement, the time was ripe for a more extensive work which includes the most recent advances in the field. The fundamental work in this field has largely been approached from two distinct and, unfortunately, separate viewpoints. On the one hand, free-electron lasers at sub-millimetre and longer wavelengths driven by low-energy and high-current electron beams have been pursued by the plasma physics and microwave tube communities. This work has confined itself largely to the high-gain regimes in which collective effects may play an important role. On the other hand, short-wavelength free-electron lasers in the infrared and optical regimes have been pursued by the accelerator and laser physics community. Due to the high-energy and low-current electron beams appropriate to this spectral range, these experiments have operated largely in the low-gain single-particle regimes. The most recent books published on the free-electron laser by Dr C. A.

Book High Efficiency High Brightness X ray Free Electron Laser Pulses Via Fresh Bunch Self seeding and Undulator Tapering

This book was released on 2017 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) as the world's brightest light source has opened the door to the study of natural phenomena occurring on Angstrom level spatial scales and femtosecond time intervals. After more than five years of successful operation, there is a demand from the scientific community to further increase the brightness and peak power one hundred times more than the state-of-the art to reach TW power X-ray pulses in the next generation of XFELs. The central subject of this dissertation is the study of strategies to achieve high efficiency, high power XFEL pulses via optimized undulator tapering and the novel technique of fresh bunch self-seeding which we demonstrate experimentally in this work. Our work begins with theoretical and numerical investigations of high efficiency XFELs in which we determine the primary factors which prevent the efficiency from reaching values on the order of 10 %, which correspond to TW-power pulses. The initial studies focus on the dependence of the peak power of a TW-level self-seeded tapered XFEL on the transverse electron distribution. We show via numerical simulations that more uniform transverse distributions (parabolic or flat) can increase the efficiency compared to transversely Gaussian beams from 2.8 % to 4.8 %, corresponding to an increase in peak power from 1.6 TW to 2.6 TW in a 200 m undulator. These numerical studies emphasize the contribution of two physical phenomena, diffraction and the synchrotron sideband instability, as the primary obstacles to reaching TW peak power in a compact undulator system. To circumvent these issues we propose two improvements for high extraction efficiency tapered XFELs: a new development in FEL hardware through the proposal of an Advanced Gradient Undulator (AGU), and a new technique for the efficient generation of high power XFEL radiation which we name fresh bunch self-seeding. We analyze in detail the performance of a high efficiency AGU by carrying out the first dedicated comparative numerical optimization study of a tapered FEL including and intentionally disabling time dependent effects. Combining the AGU design with an optimized undulator taper and a fresh bunch self-seeded system yields a peak efficiency in simulation of 12 % with 6.3 TW of peak power in a 100 m undulator. Following the numerical and theoretical studies of tapered XFELs, the remainder of the work describes the first experimental demonstration of fresh bunch self seeding in an XFEL. With this scheme we are able to generate high power (50 GW) narrow bandwidth ($\delta \omega/\omega_0=8\times 10^{-5}$) short X-ray pulses ($\delta t

Book Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Free Electron Lasers written by S. Martellucci and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-11 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains the proceedings of the 7th Course on Physics and Technology of Free Electron Lasers of the International School of Quantum Electronics, which was held in Erice (Italy) from 17 to 29 August 1980, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The level of this Course was much closer to a workshop than to a school, and "Advances in Free Electron Lasers" might have been an appropriate title. Many of the world's leading scientists in the field (among them, the inventor of FEL, J. M. J. Madey) were brought together to review the accomplishments of FEL experiments, as well various trends in FEL theory. In editing this material we did not modify the original manu scripts except to assist in uniformity of style. The papers. are presented without reference to the chronology of the Course but in the following topical arrangement: A. "Fundamentals of free electron lasers," a group of tutorial papers; B. "Free electron lasers operating in the Compton regime," where theories and experiments of FELs based on Compton scattering are reviewed; C. "Free electron lasers operating in the Raman regime," a dis cussion of FELs based on Raman scattering; D. "Optical klystrons," where the possibility of this class of FEL is discussed from a theoretical viewpoint; E.

Book An Inverse Free Electron Laser Accelerator Experiment and Theoretical Interpretation

Download or read book An Inverse Free Electron Laser Accelerator Experiment and Theoretical Interpretation written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and numerical studies of the Inverse Free Electron Laser using a GW-level 10.6[mu]m CO[sub 2] laser have been carried out at Brookhaven's Accelerator Test Facility. An energy gain of 2.5% ([Delta]E/E) on a 40 MeV electron beam has been observed E which compares well with theory. The effects on IFEL acceleration with respect to the variation of the laser electric field, the input electron beam energy, and the wiggler magnetic field strength were studied, and show the importance of matching the resonance condition in the IFEL. The numerical simulations were performed under various conditions and the importance of the electron bunching in the IFEL is shown. The numerical interpretation of our IFEL experimental results was examined. Although good numerical agreement with the experimental results was obtained, there is a discrepancy between the level of the laser power measured in the experiment and used in the simulation, possibly due to the non-Gaussian profile of the input high power laser beam. The electron energy distribution was studied numerically and a smoothing of the energy spectrum by the space charge effect at the location of the spectrometer was found, compared with the spectrum at the exit of the wiggler. The electron bunching by the IFEL and the possibility of using the IFEL as an electron prebuncher for another laser-driven accelerator were studied numerically. We found that bunching of the electrons at 1 meter downstream from the wiggler can be achieved using the existing facility. The simulation shows that there is a fundamental difference between the operating conditions for using the IFEL as a high gradient accelerator, and as a prebuncher for another accelerator.
