Book Theoretical Analysis of Several Linear Steady flow Plasma Accelerators with Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Theoretical Analysis of Several Linear Steady flow Plasma Accelerators with Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields written by Clarence W. Matthews and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solutions are presented of the one-dimensional equations of motion of an inviscid, compressible conducting single fluid moving through a channel with crossed electric and magnetic fields for a variety of area distributions and current density distributions. A limited amount of computed data is presented for most of the solutions which permit comparison of the effects on the flow of the various area and current density distributions as well as the effects of certain other important parameters.

Wood and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory is developed from the individual equations of motion of the three components of the plasma. The effect of the ion cyclotron angle ωr, which is the product of the ion cyclotron frequency and the ion mean free time between collisions with neutral particles and which is proportional to the axial component of the ion slip velocity, on both Joule heating rate and accelerator length is included in the results and is shown to be small only for values of about 10−3 radian or less.

Book A Theoretical Study of the Motion of an Idealized Plasma Ring Under the Influence of Various Coaxial Magnetic Fields

Download or read book A Theoretical Study of the Motion of an Idealized Plasma Ring Under the Influence of Various Coaxial Magnetic Fields written by Clarence W. Matthews and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motion of an idealized plasma ring under the influence of either or both steady and alternating magnetic fields is studied to determine the pertinent parameters and phenomena involved. The results show the velocities attainable in induced-electromotive-force accelerators and indicate various conditions which should be favorable for the operation of such accelerators.

Book Three fluid Nonequilibrium Plasma Accelerators

Download or read book Three fluid Nonequilibrium Plasma Accelerators written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-fluid theory of nonequilibrium plasma flow, with emphasis on crossed-field accelerators, is extended. A theory of the heat transfer to the electrodes of a crossedfield accelerator is developed that includes the effects of the three-fluid behavior of the plasma and of the applied electromagnetic fields. The analysis indicates that the electrical power dissipation in the electrode drop region is the major source of heat transfer to cold'' electrodes. Experimental heat transfer values are determined from calorimetric measurements on water-cooled electrodes. Data obtained over a range of magnetic field strengths, accelerator power levels, and channel pressures are shown to fit a correlation of the form developed analytically. Indications are discussed that large ion currents exist in the cathode fall region and that low effective values of the cathode work function are not necessary to explain the current densities obtained with cold'' electrodes. Measurements are reported for the performance of a continuous crossed-field accelerator as a function of magnetic field strength, accelerator power, applied current, and electrode position. A complete analytic description of an accelerator is formulated using assumed averages of the spatially distributed variables and is shown to yield results in agreement with the experiments. Experimental verification of the theoretical results indicates that the phenomenological description of accelerators given includes all of the major effects. (auth).

Book Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion

Download or read book Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion written by Dan M. Goebel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-12-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.
