Erle T. Bc1l 0. Heaviside Mathematics is a tool for thought. A highly necessary tool in a world where both feedback and non linearities abound. Similarly, all kinds of parts of mathematics serve as tools for other parts and for other sciences. Applying a simple rewriting rule to the quote on the right above one finds such statements as: 'One service topology has rendered mathematical physics .. .'; 'One service logic has rendered com puter science .. .'; 'One service category theory has rendered mathematics .. .'.All arguably true. And all statements obtainable this way form part of the raison d'etre of this series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deals with signal reconstruction from incomplete, noisy data. Two aspects in particular are considered: phase retrieval, which originated in x-ray crystallography and astronomical interferometry; and the problem of signal recovery from zero crossings. Also explores the differences in mathematical re

Book Physical and Biological Processing of Images

Download or read book Physical and Biological Processing of Images written by O. J. Braddick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of papers presented at an international symposium spon sored and organised by The Rank Prize Funds and held at The Royal Society, London, on 27-29 September, 1982. Since the inception of the Funds, the Trustees and their Scientific Advi sory Committee on Opto-e1ectronics have considered that the scope of opto electronics should extend to cover the question of how the eye transduces and processes optical information. The Funds have aimed to organise symposia on topics which, because of their interdisciplinary nature, were not well cov ered by other regular international scientific meetings. It was therefore very appropriate that the 1982 symposium should be on Physical and Biologi cal Processing of Images. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together scientists working on the physiology and psychology of visual perception with those developing ma chine systems for image processing and understanding. The papers were planned in such a way as to emphasise questions of how image-analysing systems can be organised, as well as the principles underlying them, rather than the detailed biophysics and structure of sensory systems or the specific design of hardware devices. As far as possible, related topics in biological and artificial sys tems were considered side by side.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume focus on the most modern and critical aspects of Image and Signal Processing and related areas that have a significant impact in our society. The papers may be categorized in the following four major parts. Coding and Compression (image coding, image subband, wavelet coding and representation, video coding, motion estimation and multimedia); Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (image analysis, edge detection, segmentation, image enhancement and restoration, adaptive systems, colour processing, pattern and object recognition and classification); Fast Processing Techniques (computational methods, VLSI DSP architectures); Theory and Applications (identificiation and modelling, multirate filter banks, wavelets in image and signal processing, biomedical and industrial applications). The authors of these exceptionally high-quality papers form an interesting group, originating from the five continents, representing 33 countries.
