Book A Treatise on God Written in Armenian by Eznik of Ko b floruit C 430 c 450

Download or read book A Treatise on God Written in Armenian by Eznik of Ko b floruit C 430 c 450 written by Eznik (Koghbatsʻi, Bishop of Bagrewand) and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conversion of Armenia is traditionally dated to 314 when Gregory the Illuminator (c. 240-332) baptized King Trdat (298-330) and the royal family. Not until the fifth century did there develop both a Christian literature for Armenians in the Armenian languages, and the beginnings of a literary tradition in several genres which provided a coherent argument against the old religion of Zoroastrianism and made for the creation of Armenia as a Christian nation. Eznik of Kolb, later bishop of Bagrewand, studied in Edessa and in Constantinople among that first generation of Armenian Christians who made available in the newly established Armenian script translations of Greek and Syriac texts, including the Bible and other early Christian writings. Eznik composed a treatise of theology and apologetic in Armenian which has survived untitled in one manuscript. Modern editors and translators have titled this treatise On God or Against the Sects. Eznik addressed perceived threats to Christianity in Armenia from heretical and non-Christian movements, among them Valentinian Gnosticism and the schools of Greek philosophy, Marcionism, Manichaeism and Zoroastrian Zurvanism. Eznik's sources include the Bible; ancient Greek, non-Christian literature; earlier Greek patristic treatises and other works; Syriac patristic texts; and Iranian works either written or oral, concerning the Zurvanite form of Zoroastrianism and Armenian paganism. The central concern of the book is to contrast the monotheistic Christian God with the dualistic or polytheistic deities and religions of his opponents. Eznik's book is unusual in several aspects. It is the first apologetic treatise composed in Armenian, and it also provides a summary of early Christian doctrine as Eznik understood it. It contains unique information on the fifth-century teachings of Zurvanism and Marcionism. It attests to an Armenian theology conversant with both Syriac and Greek sources. It also opens a window into pre-Christian Armenian mythology and folklore. The English translation is based on the critical edition of Louis Maries and Charles Mercier.

Book Patriotism and Piety in Armenian Christianity

Download or read book Patriotism and Piety in Armenian Christianity written by Abraham Terian and published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Armenian Christianity manifests a unique blend of patriotism and piety - given its ethnic character from the outset and the fact of its having survived the unfavorable currents of history. Beginning from the inception of Armenian letters at the turn of the fifth century, the author surveys that blend in ancient Armenian sources spanning a thousand years. He shows how the theme finds its fullest manifestation as a literary motif in the medieval panegyrics dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator, founder of the Armenian Church at the dawn of the fourth century. Of these, the panegyric by Hovhannes of Erzenka (a prolific author of the thirteenth century) exhibits all the characteristics of the motif in ancient Armenian literature. Consequently, his work receives ample coverage in this unique study, including a translation of the entire text with commentary. Annotated selections from the other panegyrics on St. Gregory complete the book, the second volume in the AVANT series devoted to the study of the Armenian Christian heritage."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Narek; a path of salvation, and a path of perfection-is a theological analysis of a prayer book by St. Gregory Narekatsi. Saint Gregory Narekatsi was a bishop and monk, born in Vaspuracan, ancient Armenia, X A.D . He is a doctor of the Armenian Church, persecuted and exiled, living hidden in the mountains for his entire life, for presenting the teaching of the Chalcedon Council, 451 A.D, which was rejected by the political extraneous sacerdotal authority. "It is not easy to analyze the spirit of Narek, a prayer book of St. Gregory Narekatsi, "The Book of Lamentation" (X A.D). Many see it as a rich reservoir of vocabulary, brilliant poetic verses, exclusive style of most sublime feelings. And many even have no clue what is really Narek about, not only- they present it as inane repetitive monologues. Only those who are capable of sincere prayers, who have cleaned own heart and make a honest effort to follow the holy monk's penitential path, only those can penetrate the mystery of Narek, a Prayer Book of a great value, for all time. It is a time when we all should construct our own version of truths on the absolute truth in honesty and fervor. It is such a joy, that Anna Anahit Paitian could discern this great literary ecclesiastical medieval jewel, presenting its clear-sighted iconic image to us, which can lead us to perfection. This analysis is a hard scholastic research, which can direct our vision and steps toward the true objectives. St. Gregory Narekatsi had written his manuscript as a prayer book, and it belongs to the mankind, to all nationalities; it is a book which can direct anyone to God, people from any class, everywhere, anytime. From the Depths Of The Heart A Word to God- this is how St. Gregory starts every prayer segment. Anna Anahit Paitian brings up the essence of this salutary book, which accomplishes our salvation by integrating our inner emotional world with doctrinal infallible formulas. My only wish is that this exceptional work of Narek analysis could reach all, appropriated by all, for it contains the theology of created soul taught be the Creator Himself." Father Saac Keshishian, Monastic priest, Theologian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armenian Christianity Today examines contemporary religious life and the social, political, and cultural functions of religion in the post-Soviet Republic of Armenia and in the Armenian Diaspora worldwide. Scholars from a range of countries and disciplines explore current trends and everyday religiosity, particularly within the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), and amongst Armenian Catholics, Protestants and vernacular religions. Themes examined include: Armenian grass-roots religiosity; the changing forms of regular worship and devotion; various types of congregational life; and the dynamics of social composition of both the clergy and lay believers. Exploring through the lens of Armenia, this book considers wider implications of ‘postsecular’ trends in the role of global religion.

Book Nonnus of Nisibis Commentary on the Gospel of Saint John

This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new English translation of the first text translated from Arabic to Armenian for research and classroom use Robert W. Thomson translates this ninth-century commentary defending the miaphysite theological position of the Armenian church against the chalcedonian position of the Greek Byzantine church. Nonnus’s exegesis of the gospel falls in the context of trends in Eastern Christian biblical exposition, primarily the Syrian tradition. Therefore, Thomson emphasizes the parallels in Syriac commentaries on the book of John, noting also earlier Greek writers whose works were influential in Syria. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the Armenian church and church history. Features: Introductory material on the text’s history, manuscript traditions, and theological importance Translation of the Armenian text and commentary Bibliography covering the Armenian, Greek, Syriac, and Arabic texts as well as secondary sources
