Download or read book Filaments written by David Tracy and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second volume of his two-volume collection of essays from the 1980s to 2018, renowned Catholic theologian David Tracy gathers profiles of significant theologians, philosophers, and religious thinkers. These essays, he suggests, can be thought of in terms of Walt Whitman’s “filaments,” which are thrown out from the speaking self to others—ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary—in order to be caught elsewhere. Filaments arranges its subjects in rough chronological order, from choices in ancient theology, such as Augustine, through the likes of William of St. Thierry in the medieval period and Martin Luther and Michelangelo in the early modern, and, finally, to modern and contemporary thinkers, including Bernard Lonergan, Paul Tillich, Simone Weil, Karl Rahner, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Iris Murdoch. Taken together, these essays can be understood as a partial initiation into a history of Christian theology defined by Tracy’s key virtues of plurality and ambiguity. Marked by surprising insights and connections, Filaments brings the work of one of North America’s most important religious thinkers once again to the forefront to be celebrated by longtime and new readers alike.

Book Selected Essays Volume II

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Louth
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-08-17
  • ISBN : 0192882821
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Selected Essays Volume II written by Andrew Louth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken together, these two volumes collect seventy-five essays written by Professor Andrew Louth over a forty-year period. Louth's contribution to scholarship and theology has always been significant, and these essays have been collected from journals and edited collections, many of which are difficult to access, and are here made available over two thought-provoking and wide-ranging volumes. Volume II collects essays on a variety of theological topics, arranged chronologically, showing the development of Louth's thought since 1978. Throughout this collection the nature of 'theology', as it is understood within Orthodox tradition, is a constant concern. These essays offer distinctive reflections on categories -- such as 'development of doctrine' -- that have become foundational in modern western thought but which must be viewed rather differently from an Orthodox perspective. The legacy of modern Russian Orthodox thought -- especially the key figures of the twentieth century Russian diaspora -- is under constant consideration, and forms a constant dialogue partner.

Book God Without Measure Working Papers in Christian Theology

Download or read book God Without Measure Working Papers in Christian Theology written by John Webster and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this two volume collection of essays, which forms a companion to The Domain of the Word, John Webster brings together studies of a range of topics in dogmatic and moral theology. This first volume, God and the Works of God, treats the themes of God's inner being and God's outer acts. After an overall account of the relation between God in himself and the economy of God's external works, there are studies of the divine aseity and of the theology of the eternal Son. These are followed by a set of essays on creation out of nothing; the relation between God and God's creatures; the nature of providence; the relation of soteriology and the doctrine of God; and the place of teaching about justification in Christian theology. Each of the essays explores the relation of theology proper to economy, and together they pose an understanding of Christian doctrine in which all theological teaching flows from the doctrine of the immanent Trinity.

Book Theology and Technology Volume 2

Download or read book Theology and Technology Volume 2 written by Carl Mitcham and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published nearly forty years ago as a spiritual successor to Carl Mitcham and Robert Mackey’s Philosophy and Technology, the essays collected in the two volumes of Theology and Technology span an array of theological attitudes and perspectives providing sufficient material for careful reflection and engagement. The first volume offers five general attitudes toward technology based off of H. Richard Niebuhr’s five ideal types in Christ and Culture. The second volume includes biblical, historical, and modern theological engagements with the place of technology in the Christian life. This ecumenical collection ranges from authors who enthusiastically support technological development to those cynical of technique and engages the Christian tradition from the church fathers to recent theologians like Bernard Lonergan and Jacques Ellul. Taken together, these essays, some reproductions of earlier work and others original for this project, provide any student of theology a fitting entrée into considering the place of technology in the realm of the sacred.

Book Thinking on Scripture A Collection of Theological Essays Volume 2

Download or read book Thinking on Scripture A Collection of Theological Essays Volume 2 written by Steven R. Cook and published by Steven R. Cook. This book was released on 2020-12-19 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume, Dr. Cook provides a series of articles that are part of his morning meditations on Scripture. Meditation, in the biblical sense, is an intentional filling of the mind with divine viewpoint; specifically, God’s Word. The purpose is to saturate our thinking with Scripture so that it will permeate all aspects of our reasoning and guide us into God’s will. These articles touch on subjects such as soteriology, grace, worship, righteous living, and character studies of people such as Saul and David. The overall intent of the book is to inform and inspire believers to live righteously before God.

Book Theological Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. David Nelson
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2015-08-27
  • ISBN : 0567664961
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Theological Theology written by R. David Nelson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The areas of discussion include the nature and method of theology, Scripture and its interpretation, Christology and the doctrine of the Trinity, moral theology, and the reading and use of theological dialogue partners. The essays are written by eminent systematic theologians, theological ethicists, and biblical scholars from a wide range of Christian traditions. The contributors to this volume appraise, extend and apply different aspects of the conception of "theological theology". That theology should in fact be thoroughly theological means that theological discourse gains little by conforming to the canons of inquiry that govern other disciplines; it should rather focus its attention on its own unique subject, God and all things in relation to God, and should follow procedures that allow it to access and bear witness to these realities.

Book Revelation and the Spirit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham J. Watts
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book Revelation and the Spirit written by Graham J. Watts and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this study is the relationship between the doctrine of revelation and pneumatology. How can we conceive of the relation between the self-revelation of God and our knowledge of that self-revelation? This is an important question given the postmodern abandonment of any normative understanding of truth and the mushrooming of alternative forms of spirituality. The task of Christian mission in the context of popular pluralism raises the question of the relationship between truth and experience. The focus of the work is a critical comparison between two contemporary Lutheran theologians, Wolfhart Pannenberg and Eberhard Jÿngel. By contrasting these influential writers clear distinctions are drawn between an approach based on metaphor and metaphysic. Both approaches are deemed to be deficient in their construction and it is argued that some of these problems emerge from a common Lutheran heritage. It is further argued that Trinitarian pneumatology might be better advanced by giving greater weight to the concepts of participation and communion. In doing so, some contribution is made towards long-standing pneumatological questions, including the personhood of the Holy Spirit and the distinction between God as Spirit and the Holy Spirit.
