Book excerpt: 'Ordinary theology' is Jeff Astley's phrase for the theology and theologising of Christians who have received little or no theological education of a scholarly, academic or systematic kind. Astley argues that an in-depth study of ordinary theology, which should involve both empirical research and theological reflection, can help recover theology as a fundamental dimension of every Christian's vocation. Ordinary Theology analyses the problems and possibilities of research and reflection in this area. This book explores the philosophical, theological and educational dimensions of the concept of ordinary theology, its significance for the work of the theologian as well as for those engaged in the ministry of the church, and the criticisms that it faces. 'Ordinary theology' Astley writes, 'is the church's front line. Statistically speaking, it is the theology of God's church.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Studies for Laymen: Studies in Theology Three things are attempted in the present revision of the First Series of Studies in Theology. First of all the arrangement of the chapters has been changed. The purpose has been to secure, if possible, a more consistent order in the presentation of subjects. It has been difficult to do this because each lecture was first given entirely independent of the others, and therefore had no necessary logical connection with them. The purpose only was to consider related lines of thought in order to secure a point of view from which to take up later some of the problems suggested thereby. The present attempt to secure a logical order can be but imperfect for the reason that no such order originally existed. In the next place, there has been a careful revision of the text itself. The main criticism passed upon the earlier work, so far as I can judge, has been that the language used was too much that of the text-book and class room. I have defended the use of some technical terms on the ground that if a real educational advance is to be made, the words most frequently used nowadays in Science and Theology should become a part of the layman's vocabulary. I have come to appreciate more than ever the difficulties under which we labor in attempting, to translate abstract theological questions into the form of everyday thought. However, if these questions are stated in a concrete way, it does not seem to me the task is impossible. In the present attempt to do this I have deliberately used many illustrations which did not appear in the original lectures. It is hoped that the liberal use of illustrations will enable the reader to grasp more easily the points of view here presented. Finally, I have prepared a number of Questions for Study. These are to be used in connection with preparation for the weekly lesson. The answers to most of these questions may be found in the text; but a few others are added which will require original thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every church has far more work than any one person can do. Even a team of professionals is not enough. The New Testament solution was for every member to be a minister. Though the priesthood of all believers was a key idea in the Reformation, it is little practised today. Following secular models, churches usually organize around the clergy, who are paid by the laity to do the ministry. Paul Stevens argues that, according to Scripture, the primary task of a Christian leader is not to do the work but to equip the saints to do it. Exploring new options for pastors, tentmakers and laypeople, this book provides structures and strategies to best equip all the saints for ministry.

Book Towards a Malawian Theology of Laity

Download or read book Towards a Malawian Theology of Laity written by Volker Glissmann and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key theological emphasis of the church is the priesthood of all believers. This emphasis implies that lay empowerment and lay participation are central to what the church does. Yet, lay participation is a bit of an unfulfilled promise in many cases. This book brings together church leaders, theological educators, as well as practitioners who are actively involved in lay ministry here in Malawi, so that a stronger theology of laity for the Malawian church can emerge.

Everybody knows the phrase, and most people tend to complete it according to their own fancy of what is most important to the hungry soul of man. But it had its own completion in Deuteronomy and Our Lord reminded the Devil of that too—“but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God.” Revealed truth, then, is food. Now it is a peculiarity of food that it nourishes only those who eat it. We are not nourished by the food that someone else has eaten. To be nourished by it, we must eat it ourselves.
