Book excerpt: This heartfelt and often personal work continues the story of the Big Island’s Parker Ranch, one of the largest and most beautiful cattle ranches in the United States. It begins with the dynastic transition in ranch management from the formidable A. W. Carter to his son, Hartwell, who would be responsible for bringing the ranch effectively into the twentieth century. Although supervision of the ranch officially changed hands in 1937, A. W.’s wide-ranging influence continued to be felt for at least another decade. Later Hartwell Carter would also have to contend with the whims of ranch owner Richard Smart, who returned to the Islands in 1959, eager to take direct control of his estate. Under Carter’s stewardship, Parker Ranch raised its cow herd size by fifty percent and, through its subsidiary, Hawaii Meat Company, converted its beef marketing from a range-finished animal to a feedlot-confined, corn-fed, marbled carcass acceptable to the modern housewife. Hartwell Carter was followed by his assistant, Richard (Dick) Penhallow, as ranch manager in 1960. Penhallow’s tenure is given a detailed overview that illuminates his ambitious goals for improvements in water, land, livestock, personnel development, and the economics of the beef industry. Although Penhallow’s grand scheme for reorganizing an inefficient and divided industry into a single cooperative using state-of-the-art facilities ultimately failed, the subsequent history of beef marketing in the Islands bears out the soundness and wisdom of his ideas. In 1962 Smart selected Radcliffe (Rally) Greenwell as Penhallow’s successor. The new ranch manager arrived with strong, traditional values of stewardship handed down from generations of Kona ranchers. Greenwell’s initiatives were clear: to further enhance water development and increase the cow herd by thirty percent. He also instituted research to determine the cause of a scourge among young cattle called yellow calf syndrome. As the nine-year management of Greenwell unfolds, the book offers a close look at the leadership team of the era, which included Harry Kawai, John Kawamoto, Willie Kaniho, Yutaka Kimura, John Lekelesa, and Harry Ah Fong Ah Sam. The author, who became ranch veterinarian in 1970, also provides personal insights in the later sections of the book into the use of the element copper to greatly enhance the growth and health of cattle and the birth and expansion of the ranch’s Animal Health Program. The work concludes with the introduction of the mainland management team of Rubel and Lent, whose attempt to return to a pyramidal management structure took Parker Ranch by storm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vampire the Masquerade Clan Novel Saga is a thirteen-volume masterpiece, presenting the war between the established Camarilla leadership and the growing power of the brutal Sabbat on the East Coast of the United States. Each novel is told from the perspective of one of the thirteen clans, intertwining with the others, and filling in missing pieces artfully as we follow battle after battle, intrigue after intrigue—and the appearance of a strange artifact that falls into the hands of a solitary Toreador sculptor. Clan Novel Nosferatu is the thirteenth novel in the series. Lowliest and most scorned of vampires, the Kindred of Clan Nosferatu know better than most the horrors that lie far beneath the streets. Little did Calebros, among the foremost of the brethren, suspect that his clan's suggestion to Victoria Ash of a celebration in Atlanta would be a new beginning for a complex spiral of interlocking events that is completely changing the face of the Kindred world. Calebros must comprehend all this while pursuing his clan's course of vengeance against a desperate and deadly enemy. Meanwhile, a great war between the Camarilla and the Sabbat seems to be coming to another cessation. What is Calebros to make of the fact that it is concluding in New York City, where also resides the Eye of Hazimel, an empowered neonate named Leopold, the sorcerous enemy his clan has sought, and SOMETHING that is lurking beneath the streets? This series is a monumental 13-novel exploration of the forbidden world of the Kindred. What began in Clan Novel: Toreador continues here, and it's ending will determine the fate of every human–and inhuman–being in the world.

Book Respect for the Jews

    Book Details:
  • Author : Franz Posset
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2019-09-30
  • ISBN : 1532670923
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Respect for the Jews written by Franz Posset and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight different historical-theological studies are assembled here under the title Respect for the Jews. They focus primarily on positive Catholic attitudes toward Jews during the turbulent years of the first half of the sixteenth century. The number of authors and texts are relatively small, but need to be brought out into the open. For the first time, a speech in praise of the language of the Jews by the early ecumenist, Georg Witzel (1501-1573), is made available in English. Other Catholic Hebraists who are featured include Johann Reuchlin (1455-1522), Matthaeus Adrianus (ca. 1470-1521), Robert Wakefield (died 1537), and Nicolaus Winmann (ca. 1500-1550). Their brilliant works are presented in front of the sinister backdrop of the vicious attacks against the Jews by the well-educated Catholic convert of Jewish descent, Johann Pfefferkorn (ca. 1469-1521), a self-appointed Catholic missionary to the Jews, and also against the background of the scandalous outbursts of the Grobian Reformer, Martin Luther (1483-1546). Volume 4 of the author's Collected Works fosters the idea that Jews and Christians are "study partners," rather than antagonists--as visualized in the new statue "Synagogue and Church in Our Time" (as shown on the cover).

Book Prayer Meditation Spiritual Trial

Download or read book Prayer Meditation Spiritual Trial written by Gordon L. Isaac and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "But kneel down in your little room and pray to God with real humility and earnestness, that he through his dear Son may give you his Holy Spirit, who will enlighten you, lead you, and give you understanding." --Martin Luther Quite often, theology and spirituality are separated, pursued without reference to the other--a classic example of the disjunction between head and heart. But in Luther we find a profound theologian exhibiting a profound spirituality, one that still speaks to us today. Luther sets out three rules for doing proper theology: oratio, meditatio, tentatio--or prayer, meditation, and spiritual trial. These three rules, derived from David the psalmist, provide a way for readers to investigate more thoroughly what Luther says about the important practice of theology or life in the Spirit. But they also serve as a simple way for Christians to live a fuller spiritual life. The intention of this book is to help readers enter into the world of Luther--the Augustinian monk and Reformer who prays, meditates, and suffers spiritual trial within the community of faith that extends over the centuries. Ever the teacher and pastor himself, Gordon Isaac invites readers into the reality of living a "theology of the cross," which helps make sense of our present struggles in this world and shows us how we can live in the love of God as revealed through Jesus Christ.
