Book excerpt: 'Kosmos' is the word the ancient Greeks used for human social order. It has therefore a special application to the Greeks' peculiar social and political unit of communal life that they called the 'polis'. Of the many hundreds of such units in classical Greece the best documented and the most complex was democratic Athens. The purpose of this collective 1998 volume is to re-evaluate the foundations of classical Athens' highly successful experiment in communal social existence. Topics addressed include religion and ritualization, political friendship and enmity, gender and sexuality, sports and litigation, and economic and symbolic exchange. The book aims to make a major contribution, theoretical as well as empirical, towards understanding how the social order of community life may be sustained and enhanced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persian War was one of the most significant events in ancient history. It halted Persia's westward expansion, inspired the Golden Age of Greece, and propelled Athens to the heights of power. From the end of the war almost to the end of antiquity, the Greeks and later the Romans recalled the battles and heroes of this war with unabated zeal. The resulting monuments and narratives have long been used to reconstruct the history of the war itself, but they have only recently begun to be used to explore how the conflict was remembered over time. States of Memory focuses on the initial recollection of the war in the classical period down to the Lamian War (480-322 BCE). Drawing together recent work on memory theory and a wide range of ancient evidence, Yates argues that the Greek memory of the war was deeply divided from the outset. Despite the panhellenic scope of the conflict, the Greeks very rarely recalled the war as Greeks. Instead they presented themselves as members of their respective city-states. What emerged was a tangled web of idiosyncratic stories about the Persian War that competed with each other fiercely throughout the classical period. It was not until Philip of Macedonia and Alexander the Great dealt a devastating blow to the very notion of the independent city-state at the battle of Chaeronea that anything like a unified memory of the Persian War came to dominate the tradition.

Book excerpt: Herodotus, the great Greek historian, wrote this famous history of warfare between the Greeks and the Persians in a delightful style. Herodotus portrays the dispute as one between the forces of slavery on the one hand and freedom on the other. This work covers the rise of the Persian influence and a history of the Persian empire, a description and history of Egypt, and a long digression on the landscape and traditions of Scythia. Because of the comprehensiveness of this work, it was considered the founding work of history in Western literature. A must-have for history enthusiasts.

Book excerpt: Arimnestos of Plataea was one of the heroes of the Battle of Marathon, in which the heroic Greeks halted the invading Persians in their tracks, and fought in the equally celebrated naval battle at Salamis. But even these stunning victories only served to buy the Greeks time, as the Persians gathered a new army, returning with overwhelming force to strike the final killing blow. For the Greeks, divided and outnumbered, there was only one possible strategy: attack. And so, in the blazing summer of 479 BC, Arimnestos took up his spear one final time at the Battle of Plataea.

Book excerpt: The following illustrated stories from the ancient period provide an insight into the intellectual world of that era. They aim to complement the original knowledge previously acquired through education in Latin and Greek. In this chosen literary genre, they directly derive from translations of works by those prominent figures shown and from the original sources of these myths. As a result, they often differ from established versions, both in terms of the era and purpose, providing examples of paths to free thinking and virtues useful in life guided by reason, with a recognized sense and purpose. Primarily, a knowledge of oneself, proportionality and a peaceful perception of harmony and beauty.Despite the genre, the e-book is primarily based on translations of original works in Greek and Latin. These stories provide examples of original knowledge and virtues that our ancestors tried to pass on to future generations. These original semantic forms of historical literary works were sometimes forgotten or more contemporarily, modified by later interpretations and school teachings. This e-book seeks to restore and remind us of these original meanings. For instance, in the book, you can find a contemporary translation of Pythagoras's Golden Verses from the 17th century, which originally, like a prayer, may have led the followers of Pythagorean teachings to higher knowledge. The text is known from a copy of an older work from the 6th century. Pythagoras's teachings were acquainted with the world of thought in ancient Egypt and Asia from the 6th century BC. It also influenced other philosophers mentioned in the illustrated stories, especially Empedocles, Plato, and Aristotle. Similarly, the story of Prometheus presented returns to the older original version of the story and its message. This original form was often altered after the Enlightenment, emphasizing human independence from divine will. This e-book strives to restore and transmit the original meanings of these historical works. Over time, they have been forgotten or changed by political interference which are still presented today.

Book The Rise And Fall of Athens

Download or read book The Rise And Fall of Athens written by Plutarch and published by Random House. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch traces the fortunes of Athens through nine lives - from Theseus, its founder, to Lysander, its Spartan conqueror - in this seminal work What makes a leader? For Plutarch the answer lay not in great victories, but in moral strengths. In these nine biographies, taken from his Parallel Lives, Plutarch illustrates the rise and fall of Athens through nine lives, from the legendary days of Theseus, the city's founder, through Solon, Themistocles, Aristides, Cimon, Pericles, Nicias and Alcibiades, to the razing of its walls by Lysander. Plutarch ultimately held the weaknesses of its leaders responsible for the city's fall. His work is invaluable for its imaginative reconstruction of the past, and profound insights into human life and achievement. This edition of Ian Scott-Kilvert's seminal translation, fully revised with a new introduction and notes by John Marincola, now also contains Plutarch's attack on the first historian, 'On the Malice of Herodotus'.
