Book excerpt: The themes chosen for study in this volume are deeply embedded within the respective structures of phenomenology and pragmatism, though often implicitly so. Each of the six chapters begins with the phenomenological perspective and then proceeds to the pragmatic focus. The intent of each chapter is both to provide increased clarity in understanding each of the two positions and to reveal the basic philosophic rapport between them. Such a recognized rapport in turn adds to the insightful understanding of each position, at times opening up new possibilities for the expansion or deepening of a particular position. For, once the fundamental rapport is uncovered, the two different approaches can be found to cast mutually revealing lights on seemingly diverse, but ultimately unifying, interests. The phenomenological philosophy of this study thematically focuses primarily on the existential phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger. The pragmatic framework incorporates the philosophies of the five major classical American pragmatists: Charles S. Peirce, William James, John Dewey, G.H. Mead, and C.I. Lewis.

Through the entire twentieth century this philosophy unfolded and flourished, following stepwise the intrinsic logic and dynamism of its original project as proposed by its founder Edmund Husserl. Now its seminal ideas have been handed over to a new era. The worldwide contributors to this volume make it manifest that phenomenological inspiration knows no cultural barriers. It penetrates and invigorates not only philosophical disciplines but also most of the sectors of knowledge, transforming our way of seeing the world, our actions toward others, and our lives. Phenomenology's universal spread has, however, oftentimes diluted its original sense, even beyond recognition, and led to a weakening of its dynamics. There is at present an urgent need to retrieve the original understanding of phenomenology, to awaken its dormant forces and redirect them. This is the aim of the present book: resourcement and reinvigoration. It is meant to be not only a reference work but also a guide for research and study. Material new to this volume includes recently discovered items published during the ninety years covered by the Checklist as well as items published since 1977. Because certain studies at best have only marginal value or because they can be obtained through ordinary library research tools, Levine has deleted some classes of material that appeared in the 1974 and 1978 Checklist editions: primary sources with only brief references to Dewey; the entire section entitled "Unpublished Works about Dewey" (which included theses, dissertations, and papers presented at meetings); and Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) documents. Levine has included all of the material published about Dewey during the 108 years between 1886 and 1994 and has included many 1995 items as well. She has verified all items and, whenever possible, obtained copies. She has discovered hundreds of items omitted from the second edition of the Checklist and has augmented the current bibliography by nearly two thousand items published since 1977. The bibliography is divided into four parts. The first, "Books and Articles about Dewey," lists works alphabetically by author. Replies and responses to articles immediately follow the work cited. The "Reviews of Dewey's Works" lists titles alphabetically. Reviews are grouped alphabetically by journal under the Dewey work reviewed. The "Author Index" includes multiple authors and editors, authors of replies and responses, and reviewers of works both by and about Dewey. The "Title Key-Word Index" lists key words from most titles and subtitles. The CD-ROM version of Works about John Dewey contains both Windows and Macintosh formats and provides increased search capabilities.

Many people have discovered diverse manifestations and facets of this flaw, but the central conceptual impasse is at best only partially perceived. Its consequences, nevertheless, visit themselves as distortions and failures of multiple research projects - and make impossible the ultimate aspirations of the fields. The impasse concerns a presupposition concerning the nature of representation - that all representation has the nature of encodings: encodingism. Encodings certainly exist, but encodingism is at root logically incoherent; any programmatic research predicted on it is doomed too distortion and ultimate failure. The impasse and its consequences - and steps away from that impasse - are explored in a large number of projects and approaches. These include SOAR, CYC, PDP, situated cognition, subsumption architecture robotics, and the frame problems - a general survey of the current research in AI and Cognitive Science emerges. Interactivism, an alternative model of representation, is proposed and examined.
