For forty years, David Sedaris has kept a diary in which he records everything that captures his attention-overheard comments, salacious gossip, soap opera plot twists, secrets confided by total strangers. These observations are the source code for his finest work, and through them he has honed his cunning, surprising sentences. Now, Sedaris shares his private writings with the world. Theft by Finding, the first of two volumes, is the story of how a drug-abusing dropout with a weakness for the International House of Pancakes and a chronic inability to hold down a real job became one of the funniest people on the planet. Written with a sharp eye and ear for the bizarre, the beautiful, and the uncomfortable, and with a generosity of spirit that even a misanthropic sense of humor can't fully disguise, Theft By Finding proves that Sedaris is one of our great modern observers. It's a potent reminder that when you're as perceptive and curious as Sedaris, there's no such thing as a boring day.

  • Author : John F. Halbleib
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-06-30

Download or read book Theft by Deception written by John F. Halbleib and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For seven decades there has been growing concern regarding whether the fiduciaries are exploiting the Hershey Family Trust for personal gain. There have been investigations, but such investigations are by the same individuals who benefit from maintaining the status quo. Theft by Deception explains what was stolen, the deceptions used, who participated in the theft by deception, and why all post-1945 modifications are void ab initio (and therefore not enforceable). At the end of Theft by Deception some possible means of ending the continuing theft by deception are listed. Theft by Deception also reveals that any potential solution must consider the reality of these key facts:1. The fiduciaries of the Hershey Family Trust (and of the subsidiary trust and foundation) have been participants in the theft by deception (whether knowing or unknowing).2. Pennsylvania officials are participants in the theft by deception (whether knowing or unknowing). The Commonwealth will suffer extraordinary financial implications associated with paying back more than $386,000,000 unconstitutionally removed from the Hersheys' Family & Estate as well as the billions of dollars of damages suffered by the true Beneficiaries. Consequently, Pennsylvania officials are not going to take the remedial actions mandated by law. 3. The lawyers of the Hershey Family Trust Fiduciaries have actively participated and continue to participate in the theft by deception (whether knowing or unknowing). 4. Children in numerous States (including Pennsylvania) are not receiving the benefits to which they are entitled. 5. Numerous Beneficiaries have been denied a range of benefits to which they are entitled over more than seven decades. Such denial of benefits continues.Consequently, it would be pointless to contemplate any reformation which included the Hershey Family Trust Fiduciaries, their lawyers or Pennsylvania officials or politicians. They have been part of the seven decades of theft by deception (whether knowing or unknowing). Theft by Deception lists possible solutions, beginning with the Attorney General of the United States and the U.S. Attorney General's obligation to enforce the Constitution of the United States. Theft by Deception also calls upon the State Attorneys General to protect their children.

Book Lying Cheating Stealing

Download or read book Lying Cheating Stealing written by Gwynn Nettler and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume applies the life-course approach to criminal careers, developed in the first book of the set, to crimes of deception, treason, and theft/white collar crimes. It discusses the web of influences affecting individuals to commit these crimes, as well as the society's attempts to detect and prevent them. Chapter 1 looks at deceit's impact on offenders, victims and society, and concludes that methods of detection (such as the polygraph), are not consistently reliable. Chapter 2 discusses treason. The American, Canadian, and British laws against treason are surveyed, and individual and collective motives (e.g.: ideology, power) for committing this crime are discussed. The characteristics of several spies and traitors illustrate their diversity and generally high social status. Chapter 3 examines different types of fraud, including embezzlement, forgery, arson, and confidence games. Motivation for business and political fraud is a two-sided phenomenon: the pull of money and power coupled with the push from financial pressures. Reducing the profitability of this type of crime may have stronger effects on crime rates than increasing punishment. Theft by force or stealth satisfies a complex group of desires - for excitement, independence, property, and gratified hostility. Yet the occurrence of shoplifting, employee theft, or burglary varies with opportunities to steal. (NCJRS, modified).

Book excerpt: A real who-dunit in the City of Boston. Was it a serious lapse in judgment or was it intentional? In truth, it matters not. What does matter is that a solitary act by a college student, babysitting Millions of Dollars' worth of art, in the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, resulted in the theft of thirteen priceless works from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. With the push of a button, the Museum in the Fens lost part of its soul when it was piundered by ruthless thieves.Theories swirl even today, about who was behind it and why the paintings haven't been found. Countless people have written on the subject and yet over twenty years later, still no answers. Until now. Artful Deception is unlike anything else ever written about the heist. It is told from a unique perspective in that it focuses on a crime alliance that purposely seeks no limelight, notiriety or scrutiny from law enforcement, friend or foe. They say little, seek help from no one and are fearful of the press. For once, in the annals of Boston crime, the usual suspects from Southie and the North End were not rounded up after the robbery. Why? Because they didn't have a clue about it until after it went down. When Jimmy "The Tooth" Kelly, Frankie "The Shanks" Martell and Sal "The Clam'' DePasquale found out about it and how much the loot was worth, they desperately wanted a piece of the action. Instead, they hit a stonewall.Questions surrounding the mystery are endless. If it wasn't the Irish or the Italian mobsters, then who was it? Why were some paintings taken and not others? Was it an inside job? Was it payback by someone who had it in for the FBI, the Boston Irish, or the Italian mob? Were people being protected and if so, why? Who was in charge of the Boston field office in 1990? Was McGrath ever close to solving the case? What did the United States Attorney do to try to solve it. Was the Strike Force looking at it? Who was McGrath's boss at the time? Why weren't there any Boston police cruisers seen in the area during their routine patrol? Why didn't the two robbers disguise themselves? Why was one guard able to fall asleep and the other couldn't because he was petrified about what might happen to them? How did the thieves know the layout of the museum's convoluted basement...were they schooled or had they been there before?Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a fast-paced, spell-binding story of political scandal, deceipt, public corruption and deception, as you join FBI agent Ted McGrath and his crew in their quest to recover the paintings. While McGrath, Savage, Fenore, agent Mullen and Attorney Fowler try to keep the momentum going, certain people in places of power want the group to fail. As progress is made in the twenty year old mystery, it becomes clear to McGrath and Fowler, that someone is equally determined to stymie the investigation and desperately wants sins of the past to remain in the vault. The convoluted twists and turns of the maze-like investigation, will have your head spinning, while the ebb and flow of emotion, frustration, anger, disgust and loathing, will have you talking to yourself. Once immersed in this incredible story, the pages can't be turned fast enough to see where the mission next takes McGrath's "Amigo's", what obstacles they face, the risks they must take and what they finally accomplish as a team, turning what appeared to all to be simply a Fool's Errand, into an incredible masterpiece of detective work.
