Book Theatre s Strangest Acts

Download or read book Theatre s Strangest Acts written by Sheridan Morley and published by Robson. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enthralling collection of weird and wonderful tales from the world of theatre includes such unusual stories as the legendary ghost of Drury Lane, how an actor can exorcise the curse of Macbeth, and the well-known theatre manager who fried bacon and eggs in the Royal Box to feed her starving cast at the interval. If you have ever wondered whether what happens in the stalls is actually more dramatic than what happens on stage, which shows were so bad that they closed during the interval on the first night, or how the ‘green room’ was named, then 'Theatre’s Strangest Acts' is the book for you.

Book Theatre and the City

Download or read book Theatre and the City written by Jen Harvie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can an understanding of theatre in the city help us make sense of urban social experience? Theatre& the City explores how relationships between theatre, performance and the city affect social power dynamics, ideologies and people's sense of identity. The book evaluates both material conditions (such as architecture) and performative practices (such as urban activism) to argue that both these categories contribute to the complex economies and ecologies of theatre and performance in an increasingly urbanised world. Foreword by Tim Etchells.

Book British and American Musical Theatre Exchanges in the West End 1924 1970

Download or read book British and American Musical Theatre Exchanges in the West End 1924 1970 written by Arianne Johnson Quinn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph centres on the history of musical theatre in a space of cultural significance for British identity, namely the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, which housed many prominent American productions from 1924-1970. It argues that during this period Drury Lane was the site of cultural exchanges between Britain and the United States that were a direct result of global engagement in two world wars and the evolution of both countries as imperial powers. The critical and public response to works of musical theatre during this period, particularly the American musical, demonstrates the shifting response by the public to global conflict, the rise of an American Empire in the eyes of the British government, and the ongoing cultural debates about the role of Americans in British public life. By considering the status of Drury Lane as a key site of cultural and political exchanges between the United States and Britain, this study allows us to gain a more complete portrait of the musical’s cultural significance in Britain.

Book Clyde Fitch and the American Theatre

Download or read book Clyde Fitch and the American Theatre written by Kevin Lane Dearinger and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clyde Fitch was a major figure in the American theatre, influential in his time and to the playwrights who followed. A collection of Fitch’s letters published in 1924 provided a sanitized record of his life, but no major biography has since appeared. Clyde Fitch and the American Theatre: An Olive in the Cocktail is the missing piece in the study of this important playwright and his contributions to gay history in a way that gives his plays the reconsideration and revival deserved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was performance important to Deleuze? Is Deleuze important to performance; to its practical, as well as theoretical, research? What are the implications of Deleuze's philosophy of difference, process and becoming, for Performance Studies, a field in which many continue to privilege the notion of performance as representation, as anchored by its imitation of an identity: 'the world', 'the play', 'the self'?Deleuze and Performance is a collection of new essays dedicated to Deleuze's writing on theatre and to the productivity of his philosophy for (re)thinking performance. This book provides rigorous analyses of Deleuze's writings on theatre practitioners such as Artaud, Beckett and Carmelo Bene, as well as offering innovative readings of historical and contemporary performance including performance art, dance, new media performance, theatre and opera, which use Deleuze's concepts in exciting new ways. Can philosophy follow Deleuze in overcoming the antitheatrical tradition embedded in its history, perhaps even reconsidering what it means to think in the light of the embodied insights of performance's practitioners? Experts from the fields of Performance Studies and Deleuze Studies come together in this volume and strive to examine these and other issues in a manner that will be challenging, yet accessible to students and established scholars alike.
