Book The Medical Department

Download or read book The Medical Department written by Graham a. Cosmas and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface and Introduction - The Medical Department: Medical Service in the European Theater of Operations is the second of three volumes recounting the overseas activities of the U.S. Army Medical Department in World War II. Charles M.Wiltse's volume on the Mediterranean and minor theaters was published in 1963, and a completed manuscript dealing with the war against Japan now exists in the Center of Military History. These volumes deal primarily with the operational and organizational history of Army medicine in the theaters, as distinguished from the clinical volumes published by the Office of the Surgeon General. In each case the combat narrative has been drawn from relevant volumes in the United States Army in World War II series, as well as from the large body of subsequent scholarship. Our aim has been to show how the military medical system organized itself in a combat theater; how medical planning was integrated with logistical and tactical planning; how medical troops were organized, trained and deployed; how hospitals were built and supplies assembled and moved forward; and how casualties were treated and evacuated from the field of battle. Although readily admitting the importance of combat service support forces, military students and historians alike tend to concentrate on combat and combat support units when studying operations, giving only passing attention to the vital work of the logisticians, signalmen, transport troops, and the rest. This is regrettable, for the operations of combat service support units-especially in a global conflict like World War II with its vast distances and varied terrains-have much to teach us about modern warfare, lessons that remain of surpassing importance to our profession. The Medical Department: Medical Service in the European Theater of Operations supports the proposition that the experience of medical personnel in war directly stimulates advances in medical science. More importantly, it demonstrates that the organization of health care in the combat zones, including evacuation of the wounded, control of disease among troops and civilian populations, and care of prisoners of war, contributed directly to the Allied victory. The exploits of the doctors, corpsmen, and medical support units provide a model for the planning and organization of medical support in today's Army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AHS (Army Health System) is a component of the Military Health System (MHS) that is responsible for operational management of the health service support (HSS) and force health protection (FHP) missions for training, predeployment, deployment, and postdeployment operations. The Army's MEDLOG system (including blood management) is an integral part of the AHS in that it provides intensive management of medical products and services that are used almost exclusively by the AHS and are critical to its success. Also key to this success is the delivery of a MEDLOG capability that anticipates the needs of the customer and is tailored to continuously provide end-to-end sustainment of the AHS mission throughout full spectrum operations. Providing timely and effective AHS support is a team effort which integrates the clinical and operational aspects of the mission. The provision of MEDLOG support requires collaboration between the medical logisticians, clinicians, and other health care providers within the operational environment and encompasses the following functions: Medical materiel procurement and distribution (acquisition, receiving, shipping, storage, and stock record/property accounting); Medical equipment maintenance and repair; Optical fabrication and repair; Management of patient movement items; Production of medical gases; Blood storage and distribution; Medical hazardous waste management; Management of medical facilities and infrastructure; Medical contracting support; Total product life-cycle management of medical materiel and equipment. This manual describes the capabilities of the MEDLOG system and its role in sustaining the AHS mission. Medical logistics support for deployed forces is the primary focus of this manual. However, generating force or national strategic-level MEDLOG support is also addressed to present a clear picture of the processes involved and resources expended to guarantee a Class VIII support infrastructure. This Class VIII infrastructure ensures the seamless delivery of health care from the point of injury through successive roles of care to the continental US (CONUS) support base. This publication opens with an overview of Army MEDLOG, followed by a description of each MEDLOG unit, the capabilities available, and role of care where each element may be employed. This manual also covers the information systems and enablers available to facilitate the flow of supplies and equipment throughout the area of operations (AO), as well as the current force (Medical Force 2000, Medical Reengineering Initiative, modular division, and brigade combat team [BCT] force designs) and emerging concepts scheduled to occur as part of current and future force fielding events.

Book excerpt: This Army Techniques Publication (ATP), "Army Medical Logistics," ATP 4-02.1 addresses the role of medical logistics (MEDLOG) in the Army Health System (AHS). It covers MEDLOG operations from the support battalions at the tactical level to the medical command (deployment support) (MEDCOM [DS]) and theater sustainment command where the critical crossover occurs between strategic agencies within the AHS and commands and the operational units providing logistics support in-theater. Army MEDLOG, as one of the ten medical functions, is an integral part of the AHS. It provides intensive life cycle management of medical products and services that are used almost exclusively by the AHS and its joint partners and are critical to the successful delivery of Army medical capabilities. Army MEDLOG support is tailored to anticipate and effectively respond to medical requirements through the provision of uninterrupted, end-to-end sustainment of the AHS mission across the range of military operations. Providing timely and effective AHS support is a team effort which integrates the clinical and operational aspects of the mission and requires collaboration between the medical logisticians, health care providers, distribution managers, and other partners within the Military Health System. Book Army Techniques Publication ATP 4 02 10 Theater Hospitalization August 2020

Download or read book Army Techniques Publication ATP 4 02 10 Theater Hospitalization August 2020 written by United States Government Us Army and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This United States Army manual, Army Techniques Publication ATP 4-02.10 Theater Hospitalization August 2020, provides a doctrinal foundation for theater hospitalization, as one of the ten medical functions, as well as tactics, techniques, and procedures to plan and employ a Role 3 Army hospital and hospital augmentation organizations within an area of operations. The principal audience for Army Techniques Publication 4-02.10 is commanders, staffs, command surgeons, Army Health System planners, medical force managers, and Army medical personnel and units. Army Medicine's analyses of future Role 3 medical and surgical requirements contrasted with current Role 3 capabilities and led to the development of a new modular hospital organization to replace the combat support hospital. The hospital center's modular design and ability to task-organize requisite medical and surgical capabilities rectifies major drawbacks found in the current combat support hospital. Required revisions in organizational design, medical and surgical capabilities, and ability to perform split or geographically dispersed operations were critical factors in the decision to replace the combat support hospital with the hospital center. This publication was also developed to address hospitalization requirements to support a range of military operations, including large-scale combat as described in Field Manual 3-0. This publication introduces the medical function and the medical care typically associated with hospitalization and then describes the combat support hospital and hospital center's organizational design, mission, rules of allocation, assignment and capabilities, dependencies, mobility, employment, functions, and requirements. The publication also provides essential information pertaining to the medical and surgical teams and detachments that augment the hospital, medical planning factors for medical materiel consumption and replenishment, water requirements for patients and staff, blood requirements and operations, patient and staff nutrition care, and information technology systems utilized by hospitals. The organizational structures and positions presented in this publication are established in tables of organization and equipment. These tables are current at the time of publication. The organization of these units is subject to change in order to comply with manpower requirements criteria. These organizations are also subject to change at the unit level to meet wartime requirements with changes reflected in the units' modified table of organization and equipment.
