Download or read book Treatise on Zoology Anatomy Taxonomy Biology The Gregarines 2 vols written by Isabelle Desportes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phylum Apicomplexa is characterized by the unique cell organisation of the zoites, the infective stages of unicellular parasites previously designated as Sporozoa. Apicomplexa includes Coccidian and Hematozoa well known for human and veterinary diseases they cause, such as malaria, toxoplasmosis, babesiosis, coccidiosis, and the large group of Gregarines, the early branching Apicomplexa. Gregarines are parasite of invertebrates and urochordates and they performed an extraordinary radiation from the marine and terrestrial hosts known from the Cambrian biodiversity explosion. After the basic publication in the Traité de Zoologie by Grassé in 1953, this second edition updates the knowledge with information provided by new technologies such as electron microscopy, biochemistry and molecular biology and to enlighten their high diversity of adaptation to invertebrate hosts living in a diversity of biotopes. The extracellular development of Gregarines, the considerable diversification of their cell cortex, their wide distribution in Annelids, Crustaceans, Echinoderms, Myriapods or Insects with about hundred thousands of species contribute to the understanding of many biological aspects of the pathogenic Apicomplexa. Since 1953, taxonomical reviews on Gregarines were published in the Illustrated Guide of Protozoa. In this supplement, there is a special emphasis on the hosts. Contributors include: Stuart Goldstein, Ryoko Kuriyama, Gérard Prensier, Jiri Vavra, Lawrence Howard Bannister, Jean François Dubremetz. Without the financial support of academic and non-profit organisations the edition of this volume would not have been possible. Download or read book Catalogue of the Smaller Arachnid Orders of the World written by Mark S Harvey and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative catalogue will greatly assist readers in finding the correct taxonomic name for any given family, genus or species within each of the six arachnid orders treated. It contains a valuable summary of bibliographic information, enabling readers to access the worldwide literature for these smaller orders. The catalogue presents full bibliographic data on each of the taxa named thus far, treating over 1600 species. It contains the most current classification system for each group, some of which have not been catalogued on a world scale for over 70 years. A summary of taxonomic changes is included. This quality reference will be of immense value to arachnologists, systematists, taxonomists, ecologists and biodiversity professionals, especially those interested in tropical rainforest communities.

Download or read book The Tiger in the House written by Carl Van Vechten and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormously erudite and unfailingly charming Carl Van Vechten sings the praises of the most enigmatic of human companions in this witty, learned, and unabashedly opinionated book, one of the most enjoyable and wide-ranging of literary reckonings with the animal world. Carl Van Vechten was an esteemed photographer, novelist, and critic, a champion of modernism and the Harlem renaissance. His deepest devotion, however, was to the feline, an animal who, as he writes, “has been a god, a companion of sorceresses at the Witches’ Sabbath, a beast who is royal in Siam, who in Japan is called ‘the tiger who eats from the hand,’ the adored of Mohammed, Laura’s rival with Petrarch, the friend of Richelieu’s idle moments, the favorite of poet and prelates.” All cat haters are here served notice to beware. The Tiger in the Houseis an unparalleled paean to the quirks and qualities of the cat. To it, Van Vechten brings a remarkable expertise in every kind of human endeavor: science, literature, art, history, law, music, and folklore from around the world, not to mention the most important thing of all–his personal experience of his own beloved cats.
