Book Religion in Times of Crisis

Download or read book Religion in Times of Crisis written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is alive and well all over the world, especially in times of personal, political, and social crisis. Even in Europe, long regarded the most “secular” continent, religion has taken centre stage in how people respond to the crises associated with modernity, or how they interact with the nation-state. In this book, scholars working in and on Europe offer fresh perspectives on how religion provides answers to existential crisis, how crisis increases the salience of religious identities and cultural polarization, and how religion is contributing to changes in the modern world in Europe and beyond. Cases from Poland to Pakistan and from Ireland to Zimbabwe, among others, demonstrate the complexity and ambivalence of religion’s role in the contemporary world. Contributors are Mariecke van den Berg, David J. Bos, Marco Derks, Marco Derks, R. Ruard Ganzevoort, Miloš Jovanović, Vladimir Kmec, Marta Kołodziejska, Anne-Marie Korte, Anne-Sophie Lamine, Christophe Monnot, Alexandre Piettre, Ali Qadir, Srdjan Sremac, Joram Tarusaria, Martina Topić, and Tom Wagner.

Book excerpt: "This book which fills in a variety of huge gaps in theology literature, graphically presents a tour de force that opens up an entirely fresh terrain of scholarly research, amiable alternative approach to problem-solving and generative dialogue toward peace-building, majoritarian democracy, politics of diversity, and heritage-based development." Munyaradzi Mawere, Prof. Extraordinarius of Interdisciplinary Research & Professor of African Research, GZU. Is the March still on? The volume tackles church-state relations in Zimbabwe, from historical, religious and philosophical points of view. It is particularly seized with the tantrums of the Second Republic in the face of the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference pastoral letter, The March is not ended. The letter criticizes the ruling party's definition of independence, maintaining that the situation is deteriorating and that independence is still futuristic. The various authors tackle the tussle from within their specializations, noting how the church-state tug of war sucked in both continental and international church and political institutions. The volume is a must read interdisciplinary assessment of the Zimbabwean state-church relations.

Book Zimbabwe s Fast Track Land Reform

Download or read book Zimbabwe s Fast Track Land Reform written by Prosper B. Matondi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fast Track Land Reform Programme in Zimbabwe has emerged as a highly contested reform process both nationally and internationally. The image of it has all too often been that of the widespread displacement and subsequent replacement of various people, agricultural-related production systems, facets and processes. The reality, however, is altogether more complex. Providing new and much-needed empirical research, this in-depth book examines how processes such as land acquisition, allocation, transitional production outcomes, social life, gender and tenure, have influenced and been influenced by the forces driving the programme. It also explores the ways in which the land reform programme has created a new agrarian structure based on small- to medium-scale farmers. In attempting to resolve the problematic issues the reforms have raised, the author argues that it is this new agrarian formation which provides the greatest scope for improving Zimbabwe's agriculture and development. Based on a broader geographical scope than any previous study carried out on the subject, this is a landmark work on a subject of considerable controversy.

Book excerpt: This study combines in one volume the history of Zimbabwe from the advent of British settlers in 1890 to 2000, including women’s rights and human rights in Zimbabwe. It is a political, social and economic history. The Postscript examines the major developments in Zimbabwe from 2001 to 2008. The two previous major studies on the history of Zimbabwe, The Past Is Another Country by Martin Meredith (London, Andre Deutsch, 1979) and The Road to Zimbabwe, 1890–1980 by Anthony Verrier (London, Jonathan Cape, 1986) are now out of date. This volume brings the historical study of Zimbabwe almost up to the present day.
