Download or read book Yukon Yearnings written by Raimonds Zvirbulis and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-10 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yukon Yearnings is the story of my kayak trip down the Yukon River, from the source to the Bering Sea. The paddling distance for that solo kayak journey was just over 2,300 miles. It was not until completing the journey and retturning home that I discovered that no one else had achieved that. I was the first person to have paddled the entire Yukon River. Prior to the current kayak trip I had paddled two thousand miles of the river from Lake Atlin, British Columbia, to Russian Mission, Alaska. My reason for going back to the Yukon was not to be the first person to paddle the whole river. My reason was to experience the wilderness again. Paddling in the solitude of that wilderness enclosed me in the peace of the lakes and the river. There were no distractions, no time constraints, and no urgent pressures to be in a certain place by a certain time The deep, quiet forests and the snowcapped mountains just enraptured me. Passing the villages and stopping in some allowed me to meet the people living on the river. Their kindness was as significant as the beauty of the nature all the way to the Bering Sea.

Michael accepted an offer to help an older couple build a lodge at Melozi Hot Springs—a remote camp north of the Yukon River. The couple is shocked when they see a boy step out of the bush plane, instead of a capable man they sorely needed. Michael must prove his worth and learns quickly this beautiful land can turn deadly – handing out hard lessons. Confronted with bears, hordes of mosquitoes, and the realization he is truly on his own, Michael gradually earns his place among his employers and becomes an Alaskan.

Book excerpt: “I am not a rugged adventurer, and this is not the story of a journey that you could never do. I brought only a reasonable degree of fitness to the Snake, a camera at the ready, and an open mind.” Experience the beauty and wonder of Canada’s North through the reflections and photography of Werner J. Becker. He—along with his wife and two teenage grandchildren—embarked on a two-week rafting tour of the Snake River Valley, starting not far from the river’s source and ending at its mouth on the Peel River. From breathtaking views of majestic Mount Macdonald to a thundering waterfall and raging rapids, this wilderness adventure is artfully captured in photos and prose. Along the way, stories of natural and human history are shared, giving depth and context to the narrative. A celebration of the beauty of the Yukon and a love letter to Canada’s North, Rafting the Snake is a timely encouragement for the protection of the environment and our planet. It shows the interconnectedness of humans and nature and makes a strong case for preserving our northern wilderness.
