Book The Economic System and Income Distribution in Yugoslavia

Download or read book The Economic System and Income Distribution in Yugoslavia written by Henryk Flakierski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in the author's ongoing inquiry into the extent of income inequality in the East European socialist countries and the effect of market-oriented reforms on patterns of income distribution. Although there has been remarkably little empirical research on this question (in part because of the problem of obtaining reliable data), both proponents and opponents of reforms voice strong views on this subject, with both sides, however, tending to grant the assumption that decentralization and the increased use of market mechanisms will increase inequality. In this study as in the preceding volume, "Economic Reform and Income Distribution: A Case Study of Hungary and Poland", Henryk Flakierski undertakes a study of the data in order to shed light on this question - this time with reference to the most decentralized of the East European economics and the one in which marketization of the economy has been most advanced.

Book The Market Planned Economy of Yugoslavia

Download or read book The Market Planned Economy of Yugoslavia written by Svetozar Pejovich and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1966-09-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Market-Planned Economy of Yugoslavia was first published in 1966. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The Yugoslavian economic system, combining, as it does, elements of Marxist socialism with many aspects of free enterprise, represents a challenging experiment which is being closely watched by students of economic and political theory. The system has attracted serious attention in the emerging nations of Asia and Africa and, more recently, in the Soviet Union itself. Though they retain socialist, state-centered goals, the Yugoslavs have introduced a great deal of decentralization and individual incentive and have allowed production to be largely regulated by the demand of a relatively free market instead of by predetermined quotas and plans. Professor Pejovich describes and analyzes this economic system, as it affects both the overall economy and the individual firm. He then provides a theoretical analysis in which he points out implications for economic theory and for the theory of socialism as well as the practical significance of the Yugoslavian experiment. The stud makes an important contribution in combining the economic theory of socialism formulated in the pioneering work of Oskar Lange with the theory of economic development if Joseph Schumpeter, whose concepts are discussed by Dr. Pejovich in an appendix.

Book excerpt: This volume treats various aspects of the Yugoslav economic model and focuses on the long-term program of stabilization undertaken by that country in the last few years. The contributors discuss such diverse topics as the country's socioeconomic relations, and problems and prospects for carrying out a long-term stabilization program. Essays on the Yugoslav Economic Model puts forth a number of assertions relating to the country's economic performance: that Yugoslavia must resort to greater reliance on markets; it must become more export oriented with a fully convertible currency; the country must rid itself of debilitating inflation; it must preserve a social policy consistent with its socialist principles. Furthermore, Yugoslavia must take all of these measures and more within the constraints of the existing socio-political framework of socialist self-management and heterogeneous population. The contributors each agree that given the country's diversity, a resort to markets is the only meaningful option available.

Book Modeling the Economic Performance of Yugoslavia

Download or read book Modeling the Economic Performance of Yugoslavia written by James H. Gapinski and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-10-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of work begun in 1985 by the authors under the joint sponsorship of the Ekonomski Institut Zagreb and Florida State University, this book posits the most comprehensive and relevant model yet developed to explain the workings of Yugoslavia's economy. The authors have developed a model that is both theoretically oriented and empirically relevant--ensuring its appropriateness for recommending and evaluating alternative policy remedies for the acute problems of inflation, unemployment, and foreign trade now facing Yugoslavia, a country until recently noted for its economic successes. Already chosen to represent Yugoslavia in the ongoing international Project LINK, a global system for tracking and forecasting the economic conditions of some eighty countries and regions, the model is distinguished by its policy emphasis and by its ability to capture the fundamental divisions of the Yugoslav economy. Students and scholars of socialism, Marxism, and comparative economics will find this a major contribution to the literature of economic modeling. The book begins by providing essential background information about Yugoslavia including highlights of the country's economic experience, special features of its economic structure, the composition of its political system, the operation of its financial system, and the behavior of firms. Part two includes four chapters which examine the different components of the Yugoslav economy and review the theoretical basis and empirical performance of the equations which describe those components. A separate chapter presents the complete model, called the EIZFSU Mark 1.0 in recognition of its major sponsoring institutions. In the final part, the model is used to study policies for improving the performance of the economy and obstacles to their implementation. An appendix describes and quantifies the variables used in the model while a list of references provides additional information for the researcher who wishes to pursue further study in this area.

Book The Economic Structure and Failure of Yugoslavia

Download or read book The Economic Structure and Failure of Yugoslavia written by James H. Gapinski and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993-08-30 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For roughly three decades following World War II, Yugoslavia enjoyed economic success unparalleled in the communist world. Then came the 1980s. Economic success turned into economic failure, and before long Yugoslavia ceased to exist. This study addresses the question: Could the failure have been prevented? The work begins with a sketch of the historic and economic facts in the life of the country, turning then to theory and the relationship between economic theory and practice in Yugoslavia. It analyzes structure--that which prevailed at the time remedial action could have been taken--and simulates remedial scenarios. Finally, Gapinski draws conclusions from a comprehensive program of restructuring, from the regional composition of the country, and from the profound changes that have swept across Eastern Europe.
