This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young American's Life of Fremont The book was prepared with no political Object. I have not gone out of my way to gather laurels for the subject of it. I have sketched him, according to the best of my abili ty, just as he was, and is, aiming only to present a correct model, and to render it effective in its influence upon the character and career of the young aspirant to genius. TO Dr. John Roberton, formerly of Charleston, but now of Philadelphia, I am under special Obligations, for incidents which came under his observation while Fremont, then a lad of some thirteen years, was a pupil in his school. Other facts connected with his early history, not embraced in either of the excellent lives already before the public, I have col lected from conversations with several former residents of Charleston who were acquainted with the Fremont family. I may add, too, for the benefit Of the reader - should I hap pen to have one of this class and order - who knows so little of the character of Colonel Fremont, as to need such an assurance, that I have derived nothing whatever of my material from him. Book Imperfect Union

Download or read book Imperfect Union written by Steve Inskeep and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Inskeep tells the riveting story of John and Jessie Frémont, the husband and wife team who in the 1800s were instrumental in the westward expansion of the United States, and thus became America's first great political couple John C. Frémont, one of the United States’s leading explorers of the nineteenth century, was relatively unknown in 1842, when he commanded the first of his expeditions to the uncharted West. But in only a few years, he was one of the most acclaimed people of the age – known as a wilderness explorer, bestselling writer, gallant army officer, and latter-day conquistador, who in 1846 began the United States’s takeover of California from Mexico. He was not even 40 years old when Americans began naming mountains and towns after him. He had perfect timing, exploring the West just as it captured the nation’s attention. But the most important factor in his fame may have been the person who made it all possible: his wife, Jessie Benton Frémont. Jessie, the daughter of a United States senator who was deeply involved in the West, provided her husband with entrée to the highest levels of government and media, and his career reached new heights only a few months after their elopement. During a time when women were allowed to make few choices for themselves, Jessie – who herself aspired to roles in exploration and politics – threw her skill and passion into promoting her husband. She worked to carefully edit and publicize his accounts of his travels, attracted talented young men to his circle, and lashed out at his enemies. She became her husband’s political adviser, as well as a power player in her own right. In 1856, the famous couple strategized as John became the first-ever presidential nominee of the newly established Republican Party. With rare detail and in consummate style, Steve Inskeep tells the story of a couple whose joint ambitions and talents intertwined with those of the nascent United States itself. Taking advantage of expanding news media, aided by an increasingly literate public, the two linked their names to the three great national movements of the time—westward settlement, women’s rights, and opposition to slavery. Together, John and Jessie Frémont took parts in events that defined the country and gave rise to a new, more global America. Theirs is a surprisingly modern tale of ambition and fame; they lived in a time of social and technological disruption and divisive politics that foreshadowed our own. In Imperfect Union, as Inskeep navigates these deeply transformative years through Jessie and John’s own union, he reveals how the Frémonts’ adventures amount to nothing less than a tour of the early American soul.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Explorations, and Public Services of John Charles Fremont Convention assembled at Philadelphia - where was first adopted, significantly enough, the declaration OF amer ioan independence - as its chosen candidate for the Presidency of the. United. States! And who shall say that either the people's sorrow or joy was not based upon just apprehensions? In the one case, they trembled. For the safety of 1 the young hero, .who was the pioneer of civilization infregions so distant, .and, as it, was supposed, so entirelyxworthless to enlightefiedhumanity, thatthe late Mr. Mcdufiie compared them to thebritish convict icolony, Botany Bay! Other hand, he was recognized as'the anticipated-saviour of ourglorious blossom and fruit of the primal races of our Species, the last result of civilization in universal history, and the hope and representative of humanity raised up, as it were, by Providence to regenerate our common country from the calamities which fasten foul'stains upon her (otherwise fair) escutcheon, and to the perpetuation of which the representatives of all other political pal ties are pledged, viz. The ewtenscon upon American soil of Af1ican slavery, the p0pula1 reign of b1utality in the Ame1ican Senate, and the supp1 essmn of freedom of speech and debate within the precincts of that venerable hall! Book Fremont Pathmarker of the West

Download or read book Fremont Pathmarker of the West written by Allan Nevins and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most controversial and romantic figures in American history, John C. Främont experienced a dizzying succession of public triumphs and humiliations. He made his name exploring the West, surveying, mapping, and describing the Rockies, the Great Basin, and Oregon country. Allan Nevins gives Främont full credit for his achievements as a topographer, soldier, and politician while noting how often his rashness attracted enemies and led to his downfall: to a court-martial for disobeying orders during the Bear Flag Rebellion, to a disastrous winter expedition in the San Juan Mountains, to his defeat as the first presidential candidate of the Republican party, to the loss of his Civil War command. Through sickness and health, poverty and wealth, his wife, the vivacious Jessie Benton Främont, stood by him. Their enduring romance occupies much more than the background in this absorbing story of his life. The dean of American historians, Allan Nevins won the Pulitzer Prize for his biographies of Grover Cleveland and Hamilton Fish.
