  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Decoded Messages written by Hou-mei Sung and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Ming Dynasty numerous new animal themes were created to convey political and ethical messages current at court. As the result a sophisticated language of Chinese animal painting was developed, employing both the animals' symbolic associations and homonymic puns. Hou-mei Sung's exciting rediscovery of some of these lost meanings has led to a full-scale investigation of the evolving history of Chinese animal painting. Distinct symbolic meanings were associated with individual motifs, but all animals were assigned a place in the universe according to the Chinese concept of nature. From the very early yin/yang cosmology to later developments of Daoist and Confucian philosophies and ethics, Chinese animals gained new meanings related to their historical contexts. This book explores these new findings, using the colorful animal images and their rich and evolving symbolic meanings to gain insight into unique aspects of Chinese art, as well as Chinese culture and history. Exhibition Schedule: Cincinnati Museum of Art (October 2009 - February 2010)

Book The Yin and Yang of Short Film Storytelling

Download or read book The Yin and Yang of Short Film Storytelling written by Richard Raskin and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2022-07-31 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book to study the short film using the yin yang complementarity, Raskin proposes a new paradigm—describing major forms of yin and yang, redefined as ungendered, freed of patriarchal bias. Yin evokes such properties as holding back and an openness to interpretation while yang promotes structure, causality, and control. Ten exemplary short films show how the model illuminates their storytelling. Features richly illustrated, shot-by-shot breakdowns—many in color—and links. "Richard Raskin changed my way of thinking about short films twenty years ago with his marvelous book The Art of the Short Fiction Film. And now he manages to do it again! The Yin and Yang of Short Film Storytelling offers a totally new approach to analyzing and making short films. This beautifully written book is fascinating to read and gives valuable tools as well as enormous inspiration to all short film lovers, whether film makers or film researchers. Don't miss this big little pearl!" — Saara Cantell, Film Director, Script Writer, Doctor of Arts (Finland) "Short films are the laboratory of cinema. And no one is more comfortable in this laboratory than Richard Raskin. His book gives an entirely new and fresh approach to creating short films. Think different! Read it, study these ten case studies, and enter an entirely new and original way of shaping shorts armed with the advice of the master of short filmmaking." — Elliot Grove, Founder Raindance Film Festival and British Independent Film Awards "Richard Raskin is a world-renowned scholar and filmmaker whose work has been foundational in bringing attention and respect to short films. His brilliant new book promises to be another touchstone that inspires shorts enthusiasts, scholars, and filmmakers. With its beautifully curated selection of ten "case study" films, it provides an original and fascinating framework that conveys the richness and depth that one can bring to the appreciation - and making - of short form media." — Cynthia Felando, Editor of Short Film Studies and Senior Lecturer, University of California, Santa Barbara "Raskin's book is a must-read for any film-lover or scholar of film and literature. In this wonderfully lucid and creative work, the central concepts and thesis are carefully spelled out, brilliantly applied, and made truly illuminating. Raskin has also stripped the yin-yang distinction of its sexist pitfalls in a way that enhances its utility and appeal. The book is destined to be a classic!" — Andrew Effrat, former Dean of Education, University of Massachusetts, Amherst "This is a fascinating read. Raskin has taken his encyclopedic knowledge of short films and created a tool, an analytical system, to help illuminate what makes a short film successful. I love that it's a tool that can be applied to almost any piece of art for that matter." — David Greenspan, Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at Cannes in 2001; directed or edited numerous episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Station 19, and other TV series

Book The Ultimate Guide to Yin Yang

Download or read book The Ultimate Guide to Yin Yang written by Antony Cummins and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to fully explore and explain the concept of yin yang, breaking it down in easy-to-follow terms for all those interested in Daoism, alternative medicine, martial arts and other Eastern fields of study. Illustrated with striking red/black graphics that make the concepts more accessible. The concept of yin yang can be found in some of the oldest writing in the world. It is fundamental to Chinese thought and the route to understanding most Chinese practices, from Traditional Chinese Medicine to Daoism and feng shui. It also offers us ways of enhancing our own lives, establishing greater balance not only in our own environment but also in the wider world if we can work with other people to follow nature's flow. The central question of the book is "What is yin yang?" Step by step, with plenty of helpful illustrations and graphics, it explores the history and changing uses of yin yang - not forgetting the pronunciation and spelling (why yinyang is actually better than yin yang). The book also makes suggestions for working with yin yang, from observing the landscape to get a sense of the ebb and flow of energy through the world, to studying the patterns of nature in order to take what you need but not too much, to approaching sex as a cosmic ritual. After reading this book, readers will understand how to position themselves so that yin yang fills their lives with abundance - how to be in the right place at the right time.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Book excerpt: Copperplate Script - A Yin & Yang Approach by Paul Antonio, is an innovative, new technology applied to an historical script. The script presented in this manual is not an historical hand, but a geometric construct to aid in a more exacting understanding of the script. This construct assists with writing a cleaner and more beautiful copperplate script. The Technology reintroduces a comprehensive terminology for the parts of the letters - words used by the English Writing Masters in their Copybooks, in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, as well as additional names augmented from the historical record. Geometry and physics are used to explain how a curve works and where it sits in relation to the baseline. This concept, then compares how a car or a bicycle tackles a roundabout.Learning the skeletal forms, similar to learning Roman Capitals, is a key part of the manual. The process begins with using a pencil first, followed by the nib.The over-arching concept of the technology utilises 4Fold Symmetry. There are four facets in the 4Fold Symmetry, all of which have 2 aspects; simple and complex. Angular Confinement is the first facet. It shows how confining the curves, inside a plane sided figure (in this case a parallelogram), is like drawing a square to plot a circle.Additional pages of study include an extensive list of difficult-to-write practise words, exemplars of numbers and variations, ligatures of double letters and ampersands. Sections on Brush Copperplate, Flourishing and its rules, as well as a glossary, augment this fine body of work. This manual offers an extensive, in-depth study of Copperplate Script suitable for any level of ability and an extraordinary resource for the beginner, intermediate or advanced calligrapher.
