Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Girls of Yesterday" is a testimonial, in general, to womens intuition, strength and intelligence; and, in particular, the Southern coming of age story of a brother and sisters shared and profound love for each other growing up. Jesse, the main character, headed to college in the deeper south to play basketball, feels great separation anxiety from Loretta, his one year younger sibling who all through their life exhibited physical, mental and even spiritual skills beyond the norm. Their love is unique in that Jesse always looks to Loretta for intuitive guidance, while she never fails to acknowledge her older brothers gifted sense of right and wrong. Another important theme in "Girls" is the development of an endearing friendship with Jesse and Jess, a multi-talented young black football sensation, that brings to their relationship his racial perspective of growing up in the rural south, as opposed to Jesses more sheltered childhood, and together they formulate maybe the very best of educations possible; that of two intense souls being truthful while loving each other. These themes play constantly; with laughter, sorrow, horror, tragedy, and romance found in abundance, and infused throughout with this storys main and other very colorful characters, finishing with an integrated and surprise conclusion!

Book Perseverance of Yesterday s Women

Download or read book Perseverance of Yesterday s Women written by Dragana Djurdjev and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ms. Djurdjev wrote her book to give support and encouragement to those who unwillingly relinquished their talents and journey to someone else. To those who see themselves in her story, she sends ideas and encouragement and perhaps the sense of urgency for them to call upon their courage, create a plan, and reclaim their journey through life. She reminds us that there are no do-overs in life; it is obligatory to seek joy while living it. While in leadership roles, Ms. Djurdjev realized, like her, others have a need for ideas and guidance to find ways to reclaim their talents, which would enable them to create their own special journey through life.

Book Yesterday s Woman

Download or read book Yesterday s Woman written by Vineta Colby and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encouraged by the response of the avid novel-reading public in early nineteenth-century England, minor novelists produced a staggering number of volumes that shaped styles, formed attitudes, and gave to the novel a new status and respectability. These novels were read by both sexes, but the majority were written by women. Vineta Colby examines the works of such minor novelists as Mrs. Gore, Maria Edgeworth, Charlotte Yonge, and Harriet Martincau, arguing that they prepared the way for the novels of the great Victorian era. Antiromantic and bourgeois in spirit, these domestic novels were concerned with daily living in ordinary society. As the form developed, the novels turned away from "idle romance" to a serious treatment of basic questions of human and social values. Professor Colby demonstrates how the preoccupation with high society, childhood, and village life laid the thematic foundations for the more sophisticated works of the later Victorians. The author concludes by showing that the disruption of the family unit by technology, urbanization, and scientific materialism led the domestic novel into the realms of literary naturalism and social realism. Originally published in 1974. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Girl in Glass

Download or read book Girl in Glass written by Deanna Fei and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deanna Fei was just five-and-a-half months pregnant when she inexplicably went into labor. Minutes later, she met her tiny baby who clung to life support inside a glass box. Fei was forced to confront terrifying issues: How to be the mother of a child she could lose at any moment. Whether her daughter would survive another day--and whether she should. But as she watched her daughter fight for her life, Fei discovered the power of the mother-child bond at its most elemental. A year after she brought her daughter home from the hospital, the CEO of AOL--her husband's employer--set off a national firestorm about the children he had called “distressed babies.” By blaming the beautiful, miraculously healthy little girl for a cut in employee benefits, he attached a price tag to her life. Girl in Glass is the riveting story of one child's harrowing journey and a powerful distillation of parenthood. With incandescent prose and an unflinching eye, Fei explores the value of a human life: from the spreadsheets wielded by cost-cutting executives to the insidious notions of risk surrounding modern pregnancy; from the wondrous history of medical innovation in the care of premature infants to contemporary analyses of what their lives are worth; and finally, to the depths of her own struggle to make sense of her daughter's arrival in the world. Above all, Girl in Glass is a luminous testament to how love takes hold when a birth defies our fundamental beliefs about how life is supposed to begin.

Book excerpt: In this heart-pounding mystery, a woman is found dead—but in a society where only the privileged have memories longer than a day, the chances of solving the crime seem futile. Imagine a world in which classes are divided not by wealth or religion but by how much each group can remember. Monos, the majority, have only one day's worth of memory; elite Duos have two. In this stratified society, where Monos are excluded from holding high office and demanding jobs, Claire and Mark are a rare mixed marriage. Clare is a conscientious Mono housewife, Mark a novelist-turned-politician Duo on the rise. They are a shining example of a new vision of tolerance and equality-until... A beautiful woman is found dead, her body dumped in England's River Cam. The woman is Mark's mistress, and he is the prime suspect in her murder. The detective investigating the case has secrets of his own. So did the victim. And when both the investigator's and the suspect's memories are constantly erased -- how can anyone learn the truth? Told from four different perspectives, that of Mark, Claire, the detective on the case, and the victim -- Felicia Yap's staggeringly inventive debut leads us on a race against an ever-resetting clock to find the killer. With the science-fiction world-building of Philip K. Dick and the twisted ingenuity of Memento, Yesterday is a thriller you'll never forget.
