Book excerpt: A one-volume collection of the prose and poetry of eighteenth-century Britain&#ldquo;s pre-eminent lexicographer, critic, biographer, and poet Samuel Johnson Samuel Johnson was eighteenth-century Britain's preeminent man of letters, and his influence endures to this day. He excelled as a moral and literary critic, biographer, lexicographer, and poet. This anthology, designed to make Johnson's essential works accessible to students and general readers, draws its texts from the definitive Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson. In most cases, texts are included in full rather than excerpted. The anthology includes many essays from The Rambler and other periodicals; Rasselas; the prefaces to Johnson's Dictionary and his edition of Shakespeare; the complete Lives of Cowley, Milton, Pope, Savage, and Gray, as well as generous selections from A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Some parts are arranged thematically, allowing readers to focus on such topics as religion, marriage, war, and literature. The anthology includes a biographical introduction, and its ample annotation updates and enlarges the commentary in the YaleEdition.

Book A Bibliography of the Works of Samuel Johnson

Download or read book A Bibliography of the Works of Samuel Johnson written by and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Johnson is not only famous for his English Dictionary, and as the subject of Boswell's great biography; he was also the author of many different kinds of books - biographies, essays, literary criticism, poetry - and a regular though anonymous contributor to newspapers, magazines and to books by others. There was a little of the business of authors that he did not know, or about which he did not express a judgement. This bibliography by the distinguished Johnson scholar, the late J.D. Fleeman, records Johnson's literary output in chronological order, illuminating not only his multifarious writings but also the development of his career and reputation as a professional writer. It reveals the range of his work and the variety of his anonymous contributions (some of them first identified by Fleeman). Detailed analysis of the works examined sheds light on the practices of the 18th century book trade, and indentified editions, early and late, many of which are valuable and unjustly neglected. The bibliography also lists new editions up to 1984, the bicentenary of Johnson's death, charting the course of his posthumous literary reputation.

Book Diaries Prayers and Annals

Download or read book Diaries Prayers and Annals written by Samuel Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1958-09 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Samuel Johnson is recognized as the central English literary figure of the second half of the 18th century, and the period is often referred to as "The Age of Johnson," no consequential edition of his works has appeared since 1825, and no edition at any time has exercised the care in presenting the complete and accurate text of his works that modern readers require. Now, Yale University is sponsoring a new edition of the works of Samuel Johnson, to include writings identified as his during the last twenty-five years and not printed in any previous collection of his works. The complete Yale edition is expected to occupy at least twelve volumes. It will be guided by a distinguished committee made up of Herman W. Liebert (Yale) as chairman; Allen T. Hazen (Columbia) as general edit∨ Robert F. Metzdorf (Yale) as secretary; Walter J. Bate (Harvard); Bertrand H. Bronson (California); R. W. Chapman (Oxford); James L. Clifford (Columbia); Robert Halsband (Hunter); Frederick W. Hilles (Yale); Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., of New York City; Mr. and Mrs. Donald F. Hyde, of Somerville, N.J.; William R. Keast (Cornell); Edward L. McAdam, Jr. (New York); L. F. Powell (Oxford); S. C. Roberts (Cambridge); and D. Nichol Smith (Oxford). The inaugural volume in The Works of Samuel Johnson prints, for the first time completely and together, all of his autobiographical writings, including an unpublished diary for 1765-84, the longest and fullest of any of Johnson's diaries now known. Here are Johnson's own record of day-to-day events, of his mental process and spiritual life, of his readings, his travels, and his physical condition presented in chronological succession. The editors have provided an extensive running commentary which illuminates and interprets Johnson's account and constitutes a continuing narrative based on other sources and on detailed original research. The first volume to be published in the definitive Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson. "'Teems with information both useful and curios, both indispensable and irresistible, satisfying any student's needs, stimulating the general reader's curiosity and widening every reader's horizon."--Louis Kronenberger, New York Times.

Book New Essays on Samuel Johnson

Download or read book New Essays on Samuel Johnson written by Anthony W. Lee and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Essays on Samuel Johnson: Revaluation is a collection of essays by various hands that examines its point of focus, the inexhaustible English author Samuel Johnson, from a variety of different critical perspectives. The book also simultaneously interrogates particular texts (such as the Dictionary, the Lives of the Poets) alongside general themes (such as Johnson and intertextuality, Johnson and autobiography). The word “revaluation” from the title connotes both the deployment of specifically au courant approaches—viewing, for example, Johnson in relation to climate change, or Johnson and the notion of “osmology”—as well as more general reflections upon Johnson’s importance to our present cultural and temporal moment.

Book The Works of Samuel Johnson Vols 3 5

Book excerpt: "My other works," Samuel Johnson reputed to have said, "are wine and water; but my Rambler is pure wine." Posterity has come to accept this verdict; yet surprisingly enough, until not the most widely used edition of the Rambler has been wholly unauthoritative one of 1825. In furnishing an accurate, carefully annotated text of the 208 numbers of the Rambler, periodical essays which appeared twice a week between March 20, 1750 and March 14, 1752, the present edition this meets a long-felt need. A perceptive Introduction by W. J. Bate suggestively probes the moral vision that pervades most of the essays; and since the Rambler is by far the most heavily revised of Johnson's writings, the many thousands of variant readings provide a rare and fascinating glimpse of Johnson at the task of polishing his style. Here, then, for the first time meticulously edited, is the quintessential Samuel Johnson.Mr. Bate is Lowell Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University and editor of Selected Essays from the "Rambler," "Adventurer," and "Idler" (1968). Mr. Strauss is associate professor of English at the University of North Carolina. This selection of the cream of the writing from Volumes II-V of the Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson fills the largest remaining gap in easily available eighteenth-century texts for the student and general reader. The edition provides in popular form the amplest selection available of Johnson's essays, ranging from his great moral pieces to the valuable essays on literary criticism. The text is that of the authoritative Yale Edition and includes full annotation. An Introduction by W.J. Bate provides a concise summary of the publication history of the essays and probes in detail the moral vision that pervades most of them.
