Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Worst Journey in the World is a memoir of the 1910–1913 British Antarctic Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. It was written by a member of the expedition, Apsley Cherry-Garrard, and has earned wide praise for its frank treatment of the difficulties of the expedition, the causes of its disastrous outcome, and the meaning (if any) of human suffering under extreme conditions. In 1910, Cherry-Garrard and his fellow explorers travelled by sailing vessel, the Terra Nova, from Cardiff to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The second-in-command, Dr Edward Wilson had a personal goal in Antarctica to recover eggs of the Emperor penguin for scientific study. As the bird nests during the Antarctic winter, it was necessary to mount a special expedition in July 1911, to the penguins' rookery at Cape Crozier. Wilson chose Cherry-Garrard to accompany him and another crew member across the Ross Ice Shelf under conditions of complete darkness and temperatures of −40 °C and below. All three men, barely alive, returned from Cape Crozier with their egg specimens, which were stored.

Book I Am Just Going Outside Captain Oates Antarctic Tragedy

Download or read book I Am Just Going Outside Captain Oates Antarctic Tragedy written by Michael Smith and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 17 March 1912, Lawrence 'Titus' Oates crawled bootless from a tent to his death in blizzard conditions of -40°C. Oates, always an outsider on Scott's Polar expedition, died on his 32nd birthday. His parting words were: 'I am just going outside and may be some time.' Oates was the epitome of the Victorian English gentleman: a public schoolboy who became a dashing cavalry officer and hero in the Boer War. Stationed in Ireland from 1902 to 1906, his passion became horse racing and he won numerous victories at racecourses throughout Ireland. Oates' austere and dominating mother blamed Scott for her son's death and was among the first to challenge the accepted version of events. She continued to control his memory long after his death, keeping his diary and letters hidden, even ordering their destruction from her deathbed. Oates always had difficulty forming lasting relationships with women. He died without realising that he was a father. The story of how Oates died, unaware of his daughter, has been a closely guarded secret until now. This is a compelling and heart-rending story of endurance, bravery and folly. From the author of TOM CREAN: AN UNSUNG HERO

Book Race to the South Pole

Download or read book Race to the South Pole written by Kate Messner and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this middle grade historical adventure, a dog travels through time to take part in a voyage from New Zealand to the South Pole. Ranger, the time-traveling golden retriever with search-and-rescue training, joins an early twentieth-century expedition journeying from New Zealand to Antarctica. He befriends Jack Nin, the stowaway turned cabin boy of Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ship. They’re racing against a rival explorer to reach the South Pole, but with unstable ice, killer whales, and raging blizzards, the journey turns into a race against time . . . and a struggle to stay alive. Praise for the first book in the Ranger in Time series: “This excellent story contains historical details, full-page illustrations, and enough action to keep even reluctant readers engaged.” —School Library Journal “The third-person narration expertly balances Ranger’s thoughts between the appropriately doglike (squirrels! bacon!) and the heroic (Ranger’s drive to find and protect).” —Kirkus Reviews “McMorris’s richly rendered illustrations heighten the plot’s many moments of danger and drama, and Messner incorporates a wealth of historical details into her rousing adventure story.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Although it's a piece of history learned by every British student, the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913 remains an epic story unknown to many. In this ultimate showing of life and boundless bravery, Robert F. Scott and his five-man team battled the elements--traveling through subzero temperatures with motor sledges and ponies--in the hope of being the first to reach this uninhabited territory. Arriving at the South Pole on January 18, 1913, the adventurers were greeted by their worst nightmare: a Norwegian flag. Disheartened and badly frostbitten, they trudged back toward their boat, only to die just eleven miles from the next depot. This well-documented journey is starkly relived in this waterproof, over-sized edition featuring a historic collection of stunning black-and-white photography on waterproof paper, and excerpts from Scott's harrowing diary uniquely crafted in calligraphy. Limited edition of 150 numbered copies
