Book excerpt: When author Travis L. Biller was first called to be a pastor, he dreamed of winning people to Christ, of having the joy of seeing people grow in their faith, to be a part of mission trips, to experience love in the fellowship, to see the Book of Acts come alive in the church. But many of those dreams didn't materialize. Biller admits he was naïve about spiritual warfare and the conflict it can cause in the church. In Man of the World, he addresses the deep-rooted problem: churchgoers are influenced by a force bent on derailing God's work in the life of the church. Biller delves into the subject of Satan--his origin, character, and influence in the church. He discusses what the Bible teaches about Satan so we can better understand how he seeks to influence us. A study on how to gain victory against Satan and his schemes, Man of the World outlines the values of today that are a product of the spiritual influence that opposes God's truth, rule, and glory in one's life and in the life of the church. Biller encourages Christians to engage in spirit-filled self-evaluation to discern what spiritual influence holds sway in their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the end of the eighteenth century, missionaries to the New World agreed that diabolism lay at the heart of the Native American belief system and at the root of their own failure to establish a church purged of Satan and pagan superstition. The Devil mattered, and he occupied a central place in discussions of all non-Christian religious systems and in the bitter disputes over how to combat them. In this elegant and sensitive analysis, Fernando Cervantes gives the Devil his due, illuminating a neglected aspect of the European encounter with America and setting the full history of the "spiritual conquest" in a rich and original context. He reveals how Native Americans reinterpreted the view of Christianity presented to them, how they refused to see the world as the missionaries saw it. Drawing on archival sources, he brings into clear focus the complex, often bewildering, and sometimes tragic clash between a theology that posited the existence of competing forces and one that insisted that all deities were multiform beings within which good and evil coexisted. He deals in compelling and persuasive detail with the social history of the interaction between the two cultures, explaining not only the impact of European ideas upon the New World but the influence of diabolism on the ideology of the Old. And he provides a subtle account of the role of diabolism in the emerging baroque culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that strikingly challenges conventional explanations of the growth of skepticism in the period.

Book excerpt: Karl Marx described religion as the opiate of the masses. He thought it was used by the powerful to enslave the powerless. There is one who is powerful and his name is Satan. And he does seek to use religion as a weapon. And through it he is able to render the church powerless. The sad truth is that religion can cause conflict and pain. Jesus did not come to bring the world religion, however. He came to bring the abundant life which is found in a personal relationship with Him. And through those united with Him He seeks to unleash the power of His salvation into the world. Unfortunately many churches, while seeking to reveal Jesus to the world, have succeeded in only creating a religious environment that causes pain and frustration for those who are a part of the church. I have heard too many people say, "I don't go to church because I've already been there!" Unfortunately conflict is too common in many churches. This book is written to help the church understand what lies behind that conflict. In that regard it could be called a Theology of Conflict as it seeks to understand its root causes.A sober reading of the gospels reveal that the people who were most antagonistic towards Jesus were those who helped create the religious landscape of the day. The Pharisees, Sadducees, and the scribes who were the ruling authority of the time, weren't necessarily bad people but they were misguided. They embraced religion because they believed that made them righteous in God's eyes. But when the Author of life was in their midst they were not able to discern who He was. Instead of embracing Him, they killed Him. Their anger was a result of Jesus pulling back the veil and revealing that their religion did not make them righteous before God. If anything, according Jesus, their religion made them evil. That's a shocking statement. But consider carefully His words when he rebuked them and said, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves" (Matt 23:15). Who wants to be on the receiving end of that rebuke! Yet those men made the mistake of believing they were righteous by virtue of their religious practices - and they acted accordingly. In their pride they were convinced they were on the path of salvation and eternal life. But Jesus revealed that their religion actually led them down the path of destruction and damnation. This book is a modest attempt at correcting that mistake. After pastoring churches for several years I have seen good intentioned people succumb to the same temptation as did the Pharisees. The Bible makes a startling observation. It reveals that there are people who have been taken captive by Satan to do his will (2 Tim 2:26). This book seeks to understand how that can happen. It studies what the Bible teaches about Satan and seeks to understand how people with good intentions and who believe in God can be taken captive by him and used by him in the context of the church. Without knowing it Satan can influence people to embrace his spiritual attributes while leading them to believe they are sincerely serving God. The Pharisees sincerely believed they were serving God. But when He showed up, it turned out they were His enemy. That's a scary place to be. As such this book is written for the church. It is offered as a small contribution that seeks to help the church stand against the schemes of the enemy so that it can be a fragrance of life to those who will inherit eternal life. Soli Deo Gloria!

Book The Devil s Dominion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Devil's Dominion examines the use of folk magic by ordinary men and women in early New England. The book describes in vivid detail the magical techniques used by settlers and the assumptions which underlaid them. Godbeer argues that layfolk were generally far less consistent in their beliefs and actions than their ministers would have liked; even church members sometimes turned to magic. The Devil's Dominion reveals that the relationship between magical and religious belief was complex and ambivalent: some members of the community rejected magic altogether, but others did not. Godbeer argues that the controversy surrounding astrological prediction in early New England paralleled clerical condemnation of magical practice, and that the different perspectives on witchcraft engendered by magical tradition and Puritan doctrine often caused confusion and disagreement when New Englanders sought legal punishment of witches.

Book excerpt: "The enemy is always at church before the preacher is in the pulpit or a member in the pew, to hinder the sower, to impoverish the soil, or to blast the seed, that is, when courage and faith are in the pulpit, and zeal and prayer in the pew. But if dead orthodoxy or live heterodoxy are in the pulpit, he then puts in his time elsewhere at some point of danger. No more fatal or deadly symptom can be seen in a church than this transference of its strength from spiritual to material forces, from the Holy Ghost to the world. The power of God in the Church is the measure of its strength and is the estimate which God puts on it, and not the estimate the world puts on it. When collecting money, building churches, and statistical columns are to stand as evidence of real church prosperity, then the world has a strong foothold, and Satan has gained his end." ?E.M. Bounds

Book The World the Flesh and the Devil

Download or read book The World the Flesh and the Devil written by Richard Rohr and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this small but masterly-crafted book, Richard Rohr addresses what Christianity views as the three traditional sources of evil - the world, the flesh and the devil – to encourage us to look beyond our personal moral failings and give us principles for resisting evil on a wider scale. Exploring how Christianity has focused almost exclusively on individual evil, or the sins of the flesh, he offers a gripping interpretation of Jesus' teachings and the writings of Paul the Apostle to show how vital it is that we also understand the often subtle and well-disguised evil of the world and the devil. This book offers no easy solutions. Yet, skilfully distilling half a century of teaching and preaching, The World, the Flesh and the Devil will leave you with a greater understanding of evil and its role in the social issues of our time, and better equipped to recognise and fight it. With his characteristic wisdom and compassion, Rohr offers us principles for resisting the social evils pervading our lives, in which we are all complicit, through Christian contemplation and by reaching out to one another in love.
