Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World on Wheels and Other Sketches In fact, it seems to be the tendency of every thing to be a wheel. There's your tumbling dolphin, and there 's your whirling world. The conqueror whose hurry set on fire the axles of his chariot was no novelty. Who knows that the Aurora Borealis and the Aurora Australis, lighting up the sky about the polar circles in the night-time, may not be the flashes from the glowing axles of the planet? Who knows that the ice and snow may not be piled up about the Arctic and Antarctic just to keep the flaming gudgeons as cool as possible? Does Sir John Franklin? Does anybody? • ISBN : 1610584600
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Ford Model T written by Lindsay Brooke and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Ford Motor Company’s Model T is the story that launched the American automobile industry--and America’s love affair with the car. When he introduced the Model T in 1908, even an eternal optimist like Henry Ford could not have predicted the far-reaching changes he was setting in motion. One hundred years later, this illustrated history looks back at the beloved Tin Lizzie. The book follows the Model T from design considerations (its ground clearance, for instance, had to allow for the abysmal state of U.S. roadways at the time) to its lasting legacy, and along the way describes the mechanical, manufacturing, and marketing innovations that the car’s production entailed. Author Lindsay Brooke also relates the adventures and misadventures that were part of owning and driving a Model T. He chronicles the changes the car’s unprecedented popularity wrought in the auto industry (including Ford’s introduction of the “$5 day”), and he tracks the Model T through popular culture, from its role in early motorsports to its resurgent popularity in the 1950s and 60s as a platform for T-bucket hot rods. Illustrated throughout with period art and evocative photography, this book celebrates as never before the car that epitomized the American automobile.

Book excerpt: Around The World On Wheels For The Inter Ocean This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Classic Speedsters: The Cars, The Times, and The Characters Who Drove Them chronicles the most significant vehicles ever to have traveled American roads and racetracks. Speedsters were the pizzazz cars of their era. Speedsters were owned by entertainers, captains of industry, the wealthy, and in some cases, the everyday guy or gal. They were often expensive, but always fast and sexy. Speedsters were America's first sports cars. Each chapter frames the birth and evolution of a company that produced a speedster model in its lineup and includes a biography of a famous owner of the period. This book traces the journey of the speedster concept across several time periods and among twelve automotive companies. It answers three fundamental questions:· Why were these cars so important and influential?· Why did so many prominent people own them?· What message do they have for modern design?

Book Knight on Wheels Classic Reprint

Download or read book Knight on Wheels Classic Reprint written by Ian Hay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knight on Wheels A knight ON wheels was my last pre-war novel. That means that neither I nor any one else can ever write any more novels quite like that. For better or for worse, our outlook is changed; and the place where we keep our ideas has been en tirely refurnished. So A knight ON wheels marks the end of a very definite chapter in my literary life Chapter One. Chapter Two concerns itself entirely with War literature. I have no idea what Chapter Three is going to be about. Few novels have ever been given to the world under more unpromising conditions. A knight ON wheels was published on July 28, 1914. Less than a week later the War broke out; and novels, plays, and other frivolities were swept into utter oblivion so we firmly believed for the duration. The book fell dead. It was hardly even reviewed. The newspapers had space for nothing but dis patches, Parliamentary reports, casualty lists, and charitable appeals. Even in America, the August flood of novels shrivelled to nothing. At times of international excitement no one takes home any thing but special editions of the evening papers.
