They also effected the foundation of a new philanthropic heritage of welfare of society. His distinctive style and content are deeply steeped in the hardcore of reality. In view of variety of topics, he, as though, has encompassed the entire sky of humane world into his fold, and are generally based upon some inspiration or experience. Book excerpt: Munshi Premchand, widely lauded as the greatest Hindi fiction writer of the twentieth century, wrote close to 300 short stories over the course of a prolific career spanning three decades. His range and diversity were limitless as he tackled themes of romance and satire, gender politics and social inequality, with unmatched skill and compassion. By turns poignant, acerbic, comical and tragic, many of his stories powerfully invoke the countryside-its pastoral simplicity as well as its harsh realities-while others capture the hopes and anxieties that accompany life in a teeming city where the underdog and the exploiter are caught in an age-old conflict. For the first time ever, Penguin Classics brings together Premchand's entire short-fiction oeuvre for the delight of the English-speaking world. Along with M. Asaduddin's illuminating Introduction, this pathbreaking anthology features several stories not hitherto available either in Hindi or Urdu. Also included are comprehensive notes that provide the publication history of each story-highlighting the differences, sometimes significant and radical, between the Hindi and the Urdu versions of the same story-as well as a definitive chronology, making this a truly singular collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Premchand and The Arab World is an attempt that states that Munshi Premchand’s literal work holds an exclusive position in Indian literature as well as in world literature. Even eighty-six years of his death, the discussions and research on Premchand and his achievements through his literary work are not only in the department of Hindi, Urdu, English, and Arabic of Indian Universities but also in several universities of the Arab World. We have tried to ensure that the cultural, political, and social imports of his work are not neglected. We have attempted to bring out its cultural and moral significance. The primary stress in the rest of the study is on a close analysis of the individual short stories and novels, respecting their integrity and autonomy as works of art owing to space limitations.

Book excerpt: Premchand is the greatest figure in twentieth century Hindi literature and some of his finest work is to be found in his short stories. Filled with compassion and indignation, the stories inside this volume offer an incomparable panorama of North Indian life in the early twentieth century, along with a devastating satire on the cruelty and pride of the privileged class. Born Dhanpat Rai in 1880 in Lamhi, a small village near Varanasi, Premchand's first collection was published in 1908; in 1918 he changed his pen name to Premchand upon the publication of his first major novel, Sevasadan. Premchand is still popular throughout the Hindi and Urdu speaking world and has been translated into many languages. David Rubin is considered one of his top translators. As Rubin writes in his introduction, "The inhumanity of caste hierarchies, the struggle for India's independence, and the wretched plight of women are some of the problems that arouse his indignation most frequently." This volume was selected for the Asian fiction series of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). -The David Rubin Collection seeks to assemble the fiction, non-fiction, translations and poetry of the late American novelist and scholar David Rubin. While he was best known for his translations of Indian writers Premchand and Nirala, David was also a master storyteller. His 1963 novel, The Greater Darkness, won the British Authors' Club award for that year's best first novel. He remained a prolific writer until his death in 2008. His works are archived at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University. For more information please visit davidrubinsindia.com.

Book Premchand on Culture and Education

Download or read book Premchand on Culture and Education written by Shuby Abidi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premchand on Culture and Education is a select collection of Premchand's journalistic articles, essays, and editorials, in English translation, written in journals like Madhuri, Hans and Jagran from 1928 to 1936. Indian society then witnessed an extemely perilous phase with British imperialism, capitalism, and aggressive nationalism distracting indians from the path of honesty, equality, and brotherhood. The present collection of Premchand's non-fiction prose is an amalagamation of his impressions of, and responses to, the upheavals taking place in the politically and socially charged decade of the 1930s of the 20th century. Like a torchbearer, Premchand educated and guided public opinion on a wide range of issues such as education, culture, communalism, language, arts, and the Gurukul system of education, famous universities, broadcasting, and cinema. Nearly all the articles/essays/editorials were written to combat the topical crisis, but the nature of the articles and the solutions provided have a bearing even today. Just as non-fiction is called the genre of the future, this collection of Premchand's non-fiction prose will be conducive for posterity and will facilitate fresh avenues of research on Premchand. This book is co-published with Aakar Books, New Delhi. Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the print versions of this book in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
