Book In the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the World War Classic Reprint written by Czernin von Und Zu Chudenitz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the World War IT is impossible in a small volume to write the history of the World War in even a partially exhaustive manner. Nor is that the Object of the book. Rather than to deal with generalities, its purpose is to describe separate events of which I had intimate knowledge, and individuals with whom I came into close contact and could, therefore, Observe closely; in fact, to furnish a series of snapshots of the great drama. By this means the following pages may possibly pre sent a conception of the war as a whole, which may, nevertheless, differ in many respects from the hitherto recorded, and possibly faulty, history of the war. Every one regards people and events from his own point of View; it is inevitable. In my book, I speak of men with whom I was in Close touch; of others who crossed my path without leaving any personal im pression on me; and finally, of men with whom I was Often in grave dispute. I endeavor to judge of them all in Objective fashion, but I have to describe people and things as I saw them. Wherever the description appears to be at fault, the reason will not be due to a prematurely formed opinion, but rather, probably, to a prevailing lack Of the capacity for judging. Not everything could be revealed. Much was not explained, although it could have been. Too short a period still separates us from those events to justify the lifting of the veil from all that happened. But what remains unspoken can in no way change the whole picture which I describe exactly as imprinted on my mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Polly Sees the World at War IT was a warm Spring day in late April, a sun shiny, comforting hopeful sort of day that half apologized for its sister days of wind and rain and promised the real beginning of Spring. In the city the people on the sidewalks hummed little snatches of song to themselves as they went about their work and remembered all the pleasant things that they had ever wanted to do. - Old plans long put away as impossible were brought out and eagerly reconsidered, for in the Spring every thing is possible. The sparrows Spluttered and splashed in the mud-puddles, and the dogs barked and chased them, frisky and joyous in spite of their repeated failures to catch them. All the world loves Spring, for it is the time of year when the spirit of adventure is strongest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from United States in the World War Without loss of a single minute, the great act that made us an ally instead of onlookers was made known to all citizens, natives, denizens and also subjects of the great hostile nation or government. Immediately inter nal, unified and co-operative action began, among all fel low-countrymen whose services rendered were received, with greatest, yet indirect, appreciation by the world. In order to fulfill his necessary, honorable and patriotic duty, the man had to join the army, navy, marines, and so forth, to work in a shipyard, clothing factory, food supply house or any other manufacturing plant whose products offered some aid to the great cause. The woman's task on the other hand was even greaterthan that of the man's. She, in doing her bit, fulfilled the duties of the man who left for other services, and also did home working, such as sewing, knitting, etc., besides other necessary work that was to be done relating to her housework and children's care. Book China and the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book China and the World War Classic Reprint written by William Reginald Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China and the World-War After the war, the attention of the world will more and more shift to China and the Far East. The greatest potential market of the world lies there: the greatest need for industrial and economic develop ment is there. The Far East, in general, and China, in particular, have been profoundly affected by the war: they will be even more deeply influenced during the peace which is to follow. All of the great powers have financial interests in China; after the war, these interests will come into sharp competition and rivalry. In their relations with China and with each other, the nations will face two alternatives: on the one hand, a policy leading to an imperialism and oppression which eventually will endanger the dearly-bought world peace: on the other, a course of action based on inter national justice and the development of a democracy in the Far East that will be safe for the world. These alternatives in Asia are, and will be, the same as those which the world is facing in Europe today: the writer believes they should be viewed in the light of the principles for which the larger part of mankind is now fighting and that unless this is done, on the Eastern horizon will surely gather the dark clouds of another world-storm.
